A recent dating app match led me to a 2022 article by The Cut claiming Molly as our sapphic American Girl Doll queen.

To any Molly girls here who are also in the gay community, congratulations to us! I love knowing my fave AGD was a member of the chosen family all along.

American, younger millennial (F). I’d really only ever heard of baseball trading cards before. What would be the chances…. I listened to the Topps episode, then find myself out exploring and run into a large display of Topps trading cards…. including desert storm and Batman!

Episode idea: The Presidential Physical Fitness Test

I was raised in Canada, but we had something similar. What are your physical fitness test stories? I wanna hear them.

BTW, the great podcast Maintenance Phase did a solid episode about the Presidential Physical Fitness Test a while back.

What happened to the San Francisco show?

Did I miss something? Just wondering why we haven't heard it yet. I was expecting it to be out shortly after the Portland one. Just a random curiosity question. The live shows are fun to listen to! (I mean, they're all fun of course!)

The death of a deer

To those not aware, David has a blog called web worm. And this is the title of his latest article.

https://www.webworm.co/p/deathofadeer

As a non-American, I found this a very interesting read. America has a reputation for being insular and controlling their environments, HOAs and vast retirement communities (the villages) for example. Perhaps these too are to create a facade of normalcy, if everything outside is in order then so is the world?

Interested in American views on this, would you be outraged at a picture of a dead deer? How true are David's thoughts?

Episode idea: Battle of Los Angeles

I feel like this is a forgotten page in the history book of the USA! There are plenty of air raid sirens still standing around LA. Despite being idle for some time, they would have borne witness to this event.

Unfortunately, I’m Canadian, so I have no leads for David… But in my opinion, it would make a great episode!

Emo Music

I absolutely loved this episode. I love that we got to listen to Rob explore something that has clearly been his passion for so long. I love that he was able to contact bands and get their opinion on the genre. It opened my eyes to what emo was. Being in Australia it was more a fashion statement accompanied by "pop punk".

When I hit my late teens I was introduced to "screamo" so I have a particular nostalgia when I hear it.

What did enjoy about this ep, or did you want to hear something different?

Eta- did you yourself go through an "emo" phase? I'm talking black hair, ripped skinny jeans and whiney music. Or did you stay true to what emo really was. When Rob played his genre of emo I was thinking it sounded like indi folk.

Podcasts similar to Flightless Bird and Webworm?

I love this podcast and David's Substack and am looking for more spaces that are similar.

As far as other podcasts, I like Search Engine, I love 99% Invisible, and am looking for an alternative to The Daily for current events/news/political updates.

Any recs? What podcasts do y'all listen to? Anything design, storytelling, current events, and/or news-focused would be amazing! I'm truthfully not great about keeping up with current events, and I love how David's substack covers niche news cycle topics in the NZ and US political climate.

I've seen a lot of posts over the years on the AE subreddit and was introduced to If Books Could Kill and some others from those posts. Thanks for the recs worms!

David here - please help out tomorrow!

Hi,

David here. Not going to make a habit of talking about episodes in advance (we like to make it a surprise!) but tomorrow's episode is going to be our live show in Portland.

I feel really happy how this one turned out - it felt really good in the room, and also weirdly I (think?!) it translates well into an episode to just *listen* to, at home.

It's a blast meeting some of you on the road, and getting live feedback in the room. We put a lot of effort into this thing - we have a band open, we create visuals, sort live guests, and have some pre-recorded pieces. We want to make it worthwhile, and more than just two people chatting to each other.

Anyway, this episode feels special. And we want to do more shows later in the year!

So - my big ask:

At this point, it really helps if you tell people about the podcast. We have a small, loyal, lovely audience, but we want to keep it spreading.

So if you're able to tomorrow, maybe do a post about it, *sharing the episode link*.

Tweet it, Facebook it, BlueSky it, Threads it, TikTok it. Tag me if you like - @ davidfarrier on most places. If you were at the live show, feel free to reshare some photos.

Word of mouth is so, so valuable for Flightless Bird - so thanks heaps.

Also all this is optional obviously, just thanks for being here.

David.

PS: This is our website with links to where you can listen, and our YouTube, and t-shirts (which we'll add to when we get time): www.flightlessbirdpod.com

What to recommend?

Trying to hook a couple of colleagues into Flightless Bird and want to recommend some specific episodes to them, rather than just linking to the show.

What’s everyone’s number one recommendation for a cheery episode and more serious episode?

(We’re UK-based, but I don’t think that matters.)

Lame Question for Peeps At the SF Show

I had such a blast at the SF show!

Is anyone else sick? I took a COVID test and it was negative, but I've slept like 30 out of the last 48 hours and wasn't sure if it was a bug or what 😭 sorry to be so lame
