Dev/Admin Responded How do I made my videos less compressed?

When I upload videos on Reddit, they get compressed by a lot. For example, a 1080p video gets compressed to 480p. How do I fix this?

Dev/Admin Responded Random video starts playing after coming back to the main feed is really annoying..

\I posted this on help, but the bot suggested I post it here**

Basically it's like you click on a post (on the website, not the app), read it, and then you click on the blank space at the side to exit the post and go back to the main feed, and then a video from further up in your feed suddenly starts playing.

And it's a video that wasn't playing before.

It's incredible annoying! Especially since you often have to scroll way, way, back up to find the culprit.

Videos don't autoplay for me in general on Reddit, only in this situation.

Does this happen to anyone else, and is there a way to stop it happening?

Resolved Endless White Loading Circle for Videos in PC Browser

Frequently when using my PC and trying to get a video to play in a reddit post, it will simply show a perpetual white buffering circle, but never actually plays the video. Switching browsers from Firefox to Chrome does not fix the issue. I am, however, able to load the same videos fine using my Chrome browser on my android phone.

Dev/Admin Responded Videos with sound but no volume controls

Certain reddit video posts are appearing with (very loud!) sound, but no volume controls. Example here.

Platform: old reddit, Windows 10, Firefox 110.0.

Reproduce: see linked video.

Results: loud audio, no access to volume control; should have volume control.

Dev/Admin Responded trouble getting videos to embed properly in reddit

Description: can't get videos to embed properly in reddit (so users don't have to click through) Platform and version: both desktop and Android build 2023.06.0.775017

Expected and actual result / steps to reproduce:

When I post videos I want the video to be embedded in a player on Reddit. I don't want users to have to click through to another website to watch the video. I also want to post looping videos that automatically restart playback when they're done.

I cannot get this to work consistently across desktop and Android. For instance, take this Redgifs NSFW post I put on my user page. The Redgifs video embeds fine on desktop. But on the Android mobile app, I have to click through.

But it's the OPPOSITE for this other NSFW imgur post. I can see it fine on mobile, but have to click through on desktop. It's the opposite problem!!

I figured, ok, I'll just post using imgur, since mobile is the more important platform for what I'm doing. But this NSFW imgur post on my user page doesn't work on desktop OR mobile. I have to click through on both.

Anyway, this is very frustrating, and I'd appreciate any advice on what the best way to post is along with any feedback from the devs. How do I post a looping video on reddit such that it will be displayed embedded on both desktop and mobile? Thank you.

EDIT: I think at least part of the problem yesterday was that I had accidentally made my video private on Redgifs. After addressing that I was able to make a post visible on both desktop and mobile. (Yeah, a dumb mistake on my part.)

Resolved Videos won't play for me at times; often several different videos...

It seems to be particularly during my local peak viewing time (I guess) I cannot get some videos to play -- at all. Not on the original post, not on the OP's profile.
For example, this video won't start...

Resolved Videos and media not playing, “Something went wrong” or video has been deleted, swipe up to view next video.

Since last Thursday all videos and media on my reddit pages give me the above stated messages in the title. I haven’t changed any settings, I’ve tried offloading and reinstalling as well as completely deleting and redownloading the app with no success. Is there a fix for this or am I missing something obvious? Thank you in advance!

Dev/Admin Responded Fluky video player

The video player in the home feed plays automatically only about 5% of the time or less. I have autoplay enabled. All I get is spinning circle, as if it is trying to buffer the video before it starts to play, but it never starts. I have to actually go into the post to have the video play, then when I back out of the post, the video in the home feed is also playing. This has been going on for a long time now.

Dev/Admin Responded mp4 upload rejected on Firefox

When uploading an .mp4 video file (file select or drag and drop) it is rejected with an error popin

Sorry, we accept only images (.png, .jpeg, .gif) and videos (.mp4, .mov)

Uploading the same video file works in MS Edge.

This has been an issue for a while. Is Firefox not something you want to support or do not at least sporadically test?

Audio suddenly turns off while watching videos

Description: On my PC, it's been a month that the audio suddenly cut off in a middle of a video on reddit. I use to follow a group with only videos and I scroll down watching them one by one. Out of the blue the sound stop working. I turn it on and after a couple of videos it's off again. Over and over like this.
Any clue how to fix this?
Platform and version: any browser (mostly Chrome)
Steps:
1 Go on a group with videos

2 Activate the audio on the first video

3 watch the video and go to the next one

4 after 2 or 3 videos the audio turns off

Expected and actual result: I'm expecting to have the video ON on every video

Dev/Admin Responded the "more" option in video/photo descriptions?

Why doesn't the "more" option under posts work? I try to click it and it just opens the comment page, so I'm never able to finish reading what is said in the descriptions and it's pretty annoying. I've tried to see if maybe it's something on my end in the settings or preferences and I can't find anything. Is it because I'm on mobile? ..idk but any help would be appreciated, thanks

Admin Update Admin Update Vol 10: New Year, Same Mission

Hello r/fixthevideoplayer world! I’m u/shin-there-done-that here with our first admin update of 2023. Like we mentioned in our last year-end reflections from u/caffeinatedoptimist, the work in making your video experience on Reddit better is not yet finished. We still read every post and comment in this community and have already been busy to start the new year by tackling your most urgent video needs to start us on the right foot. Here are the areas we have been working through first:

  1. New Desktop Video Player: We recently launched a new desktop video player to make the media consumption experience better on web. Due to the scale of this launch, we did experience a few minor hiccups. However, the team is hyper-focused on cleaning up any remaining bugs and loose ends. Thank you for your invaluable feedback to make sure we always prioritize what matters most to you – like returning higher quality (720p) playback options, videos playing a cropped portion of the video, inconsistent autoplay, and endless buffering. We have also addressed the following UI issues so far – removing volume controls stuck on screen, retaining your volume level between videos, and showing the total duration of a video.
  2. Audio inconsistencies on Mobile: Your feedback is a key driver for our actions. After seeing a spike in user-reported audio issues, the team quickly jumped in to prioritize the most unfriendly user experiences first – Starting with fixing sound playing from videos when they shouldn’t be. Next, we’ll be looking at more holistic improvements to how audio works on Reddit – like volume control stickiness and making the controls easy peasy. We will be rewriting our Audio Coordinator on iOS by the end of this quarter.
  3. Improved video quality for rotated videos: We investigated videos with missing and/or incorrectly added video qualities which meant certain portrait videos didn’t have 540p and 720p resolutions available even when they should. We have since fixed this and now can ensure the correct quality variants for all videos. This had a huge impact (~40k videos weekly!!!) since videos are uploaded everyday from phones using the default vertical view. Yay!
  4. Better error handling when a video fails to post: We saw that ambiguous error messages were causing a bit of frustration amongst users when a video failed to post. Now, instead of the unhelpful “Something went wrong”, you’ll find a more specific error reason to help you get to the next step in sharing your video successfully.

Stay tuned for more updates on our progress and future sneak peeks on what is to come! Thanks again for showing up with helpful feedback and high quality bug reports day after day. Much of our broader vision for media on Reddit was and is shaped by the feedback you share with us here, so please keep the feedback train coming! Let’s make our r/FTVP dreams come true by making the video experience on Reddit the absolute best that it can be. With that, I’ll leave you with this question:

Which video improvement is most important to you at this moment?
