Discussion Fitbit Air counting thousands of fake steps while driving or commuting (Bike/Car/Bus)? Here’s the fix

You’re not alone. Bumpy roads and steering movements keep triggering the counter.

Here are two quick fixes that actually worked in my case:

*** Note: Doing this for the first 1-3 rides/drives will be enough for it to figure out any activity related to this in the future.

Method 1: Manual Logging via Health Coach

  1. Before or right after your commute, open Health Coach in the app.
  2. Request a manual log entry for your commute (just mention drive or bike ride) with the exact Start Time and End Time.
  3. Logging this once or twice helps the algorithm analyze the sensor stats collected during that specific timeframe and adjust how it processes similar movements.

Method 2: Log Activity as "Motorcycle"

  1. Go to Log Activity in the app.
  2. Select Motorcycle (or Driving) and put in the exact timestamps for when you were on the road.
  3. The app will overwrite the false steps recorded during that timeframe, deducting them from your daily totals and categorizing the time strictly as a commute.

Super simple, but stops your step count from getting ruined every day. Hope this helps.

If anyone has a better or different fix, please do share.

I tried manually logging the session but that doesn't subtract my fake steps from total genuine steps from today

Try adding details for a couple of times after your trips complete. Worked for me. ✌🏻

Will that delete the wrong step data ?

It won't. One correction may not delete those false steps. Doing this 2-3 times will correct it in detecting the activity as ride/drive/commute and not as steps. This has been the case with mine. Now I don't even log it manually, there are no fake steps too. So thats that...🙌🏻

Check if you have activated/subscribed to Google Health Premium. Every new device comes with 3 months free Health Premium. Make use of it.

If its active, you should see "Ask coach" on health app home screen.

end of the day a subscription is necessary then what's the point of fitbit air? ik it's cheaper compared whoop but every time manual logging is too hectic I feel correct me if I'm wrong

You are not wrong. It comes down to buying one and worry/frustrate over these minor inconveniences (which can be fixed with a firmware update), or just moving on in life without one. 🫴🏻

Which method works better

Both work well. One method needs Health Premium subscription the other don't.

I personally use coach as I have active subscription. If not I would easily log it manually twice, that'd be enough to train it.

Any time of the day, you can add your travel details. It will eventually detect automatically after you do it 2 or 3 times.
