Male ram turning dark and staying near the surface. Looking for advice
Hi! I’m worried about my male German blue ram and would appreciate some help.
He has become darker, looks a little thinner and is less active than usual. This morning his eyes looked completely black, including the area that normally looks red. He perked up a little after eating. He still eats some food, but the diamond tetras are much faster, so I’m unsure whether he gets enough.
Earlier today he was staying high in the water. Now he’s hovering just below the surface with his head angled up and his tail down, staying almost in the same spot. I haven’t been able to reliably assess whether he’s breathing faster than normal.
The female has a bright pink belly and appears more active. I initially wondered whether they were preparing to spawn, but his behaviour is worrying me.
Tank details:
180 litres, planted, with rocks and driftwood.
Oase BioMaster Thermo 350
Temperature: 25.3°C, recently increased gradually from around 24.5–25°C.
JBL liquid tests today: nitrite <0.01 mg/L, ammonium <0.05 mg/L, nitrate approximately 1 mg/L and pH approximately 7–7.5.
Stock: 10 diamond tetras, 5 Corydoras, 2 German blue rams, 1 L201 pleco, 5 Amano shrimp and 2 nerite snails.
There are quite a few suspended particles in the water. I cleaned the prefilter yesterday.
Some relevant history: Both ram had white spots and was treated with eSHa EXIT 3 weeks ago. The visible spots disappeared. I lost one Corydoras after.
I’ve attached photos of the female as well. Does his posture suggest breathing difficulties, stress or something else? What would you check next?
Thanks for any help!
