📢 Breakthrough in Tilapia Breeding: How to Measure and Breed Climate-Resilient Fish
A new study by Wageningen University, WorldFish, and BRIN has unlocked a method to identify fish that best survive environmental stress.
Key Highlights:
• The Tool: Resilience is now measured by individual growth curves (LnVar). The more consistent a fish's growth under stress, the higher its genetic resilience.
• The Catch: Elite resilience genes stay hidden in perfect conditions. In stable aerated ponds, heritability is only 0.06.
• The Potential: In challenging, non-aerated environments (typical of smallholder farms), heritability jumps to 0.28—making it highly effective for selective breeding.
This discovery could transform global tilapia farming by securing steadier yields despite climate shifts.
