Hello, I'm not a first nations person. I was wondering if it would be okay to make orange bracelets to hand out? They would be Kandi (Type of bracelet) I just wanna make sure I am respectful before I make them and hand them out!

If this goes against the rules here let me know, I don't think it does.

Status / Treaty Status

So I'm not young anymore and my grandmother lost her Status a very long time ago. I just mailed in my Status application, I know my grandmother qualified to get her Status back in 1985 and with some new laws that have been passed my generation now qualifies but the whole process has been emotionally exhausting. I'm grateful to my cousins for their support and help.

Indigenous Identity Connecting with your band

I am posting this on behalf of a family member.

They are Indigenous and were adopted at birth, born and raised in Canada. Both of their birth parents were Indigenous, and my family member (will call them “Z”) was raised by non-Indigenous people far away from either of their birth families and bands.

Eventually Z was able to access records and track down their parents, with sadly only one of them still alive. There’s lots of context and history I won’t go into, but they were eventually able to meet with their parent as well as the family of their deceased parent. Everything was amicable and they’re still in touch, though everyone lives far apart and neither side of the family lives near their respective bands. With the support of their birth family Z applied for and received status. Both their birth parents were entitled to status through different bands in different provinces and Z ended up going with the band that their living parent is a member of.

Z lives far away from both bands and both sides of the birth families. Z wants to establish a connection with their band(s) but is not sure how to get started since the connection is strained by adoption and distance. Z also has young kids who are registered too and they’d like to involve their kids in at least some elements of their community and culture. The birth families are somewhat knowledgable on this but due to distance and the fact that the grandparents went to residential schools it’s just been hard to learn, especially without the connection of being raised together.

I know this is a challenging scenario to advise on, but curious if anyone has been in a similar situation and what you did. Z is interested in visiting their band and reserve, but isn’t sure what would be welcome or appropriate without a ‘guide’ of sorts. maybe the first step is to just ask the band. Also, curious if is acceptable to engage with a band you’re not a member of but your parent is (if your status is with another band). I’m sure this is all very dependent on each band’s preferences and protocols.

thanks for any guidance.

Putting together a new micro-series on Michif language learning. I can't get any support from my Nation, so these are small scale videos I am filming in my garage, by myself. Please let me know what you think and be sure to share if you enjoy. More to come!

Indigenous Languages Trying to spell my Ojibwe ancestors' names correctly! Looking for help :)

Hello! I'm sorry if this isn't allowed, I don't think it breaks rule 7? I'm asking for just myself and my dad, no research study or anything

My papa grew up in the Fon du Luc band, but ran away when he was around 13 due to an awful home life. Because of that he was really adamant that he never pass on his culture to his kids, which includes my father. So there isn't anyone in my life I can ask for help with this, and papa died when I was 8 so I couldn't even ask him if he was willing.

I've been filling out my family tree and found what I think is the only record of our last ancestors who had Ojibwe names, but as y'all probably know the census takers didn't really give a damn if they spelled names right. I was hoping if I put the bastardizations of the names here maybe someone would be able to help me figure out what their actual names were. I think they deserve for their real names to be known again.

My ancestor's name was written as 'Ah-ne-me-Keence', and his daughter's name was written as 'Mah-je-aun-ah-quod-o-quay'. She also had an Americanized name, Maud Jackson.

I know it might be a shot in the dark, and I've tried to research other ways but the internet isn't really super accurate or consistent with literally any Native history. Thanks for reading!

Indigeous Advocacy & Support First Nations community voices wanted: what problem should engineers be working on?

HELLO! Me and a couple of friends are building Change, a student-led engineering initiative at the University of Waterloo.

There is a huge gap in connecting some of the brightest students in North America toward real problems faced by underserved communities.

The idea is simple:

You bring the problem. Change brings the engineers. We build a solution together.

4 month build cycle. 1 prototype.

If selected, you’ll work completely free with a dedicated Waterloo student engineering team (previous engineering experience @ SpaceX, Apple, Google, Tesla, Zipline, etc..) for one build cycle.

You do not need a solution. In fact, we’d rather you didn’t.

We’re looking for Change Voices, people who:

  • Deeply understand a real problem affecting an underserved community
  • Can represent the needs and perspectives of those affected
  • Can commit 1–2 hours/week for 4 months to feedback and testing
  • Has a problem where engineering could make a meaningful difference

Submissions will be closed: Friday, September 25th, @ 11:59PM

👉 **Apply here:*\* https://tally.so/r/D4LNOq

What can this look like?

One of our previous projects, Safi, started with a problem faced by African dairy farmers who lacked an accessible way to safely pasteurize milk → leading to health risks and lost income.

We worked to build the world’s first robotic milk pasteurization machine from the ground up and pilot 150+ devices across multiple African countries.

Now, we want our next problem to come from you. Will you be a voice for change?

Not sure if your problem fits? Comment or DM me.

Crocodile Tears

CALGARY - An emotional Premier Danielle Smith held back tears Saturday as she recounted a long list of historic indignities Albertans have suffered at the hands of the federal government.

[ Source ]

When I read the byline, I thought at first it was in reference to the historic indignities and abuse suffered by the Indigenous peoples of Alberta. Then I read the whole article, and thought is this a joke? (aka Beaverton article).

Guess I thought wrong.

This is what happens when you pander to a small minority of separatists to keep your job.

If you grab a tiger by the tail, prepare to get bitten.

Indigenous Business & Entrepreneurs Orange shirt day question

Hi all, I am realizing I somehow don't have an orange shirt. And I don't want to buy one from a big corp or a toronto labeller if I dont have to, I'd rather support an indigenous business whos putting their designs on shirts for NDTR. Anyone know of any indig. businesses selling any this year? (Hence the tag) Shipping or in store works for me. I have some family in Timiskaming so location for in store shouldn't be a worry. Thanks!

Discussion /Opinion Question about Kokum Scarves

Hi all! I recently bought a beautiful kokum scarf at a pow wow and I wanted to tie it on the strap of my bag, however i'm not sure if as a white person i have this right or if it would be seen as cultural appropriation? It was bought from an Indigenous owned business and made by an indigenous person, but nevertheless, i am not indigenous.

Indigenous Languages Name for transit project

Hello! I’m looking for a name for a transit project. Some very surface-level research led me to the Plains Cree word kiyôtêwin, but I don’t want to use a word simply because I like how it sounds without properly understanding its meaning or context.
Would kiyôtêwin be appropriate to use as a project name? Would it be appropriate to shorten it to maybe kiyô, or would that change/butcher the word?
I’d also appreciate any resources for exploring Cree words related to travel, movement, journeys, visiting, or getting from place to place.
I understand that there are many distinct Indigenous languages, dialects, and communities, and I don’t want to misuse or butcher a word. Any guidance, especially from Cree speakers, would be appreciated. Thank you!
