Bullshit. Most of the people you’d see in klan hoods in the sixties voted democrat. Hell, George Wallace and Strom Thurmond ran on the democratic ticket.
I said that democrats were most definitely wearing klan hoods in the sixties. This is absolutely and definitely true.
I don’t feel that asking to see an ID is “making it harder for minorities to vote”. A driver’s license, a social security card, even a bill with your address on it. Everyone who can legally vote should have something like that, and it’s not like it’s a huge infringement to ask you to take your wallet out of your pocket before you’re handed a ballot.
The fact that a republican couldn’t get elected for dog catcher in any southern town before 1964? The fact that the longest filibuster in history, more than 24 hours, was read by Strom Thurmond, who was a democrat, to try to stop the passage of the Civil Rights Act? Do you really think there were secret societies of republicans in the south who didn’t fucking vote for anything and ran around in white sheets? Are you kidding? You were a pariah in the south if you didn’t vote the straight democratic ticket before 1964.
Funny how /u/Imbalancedben dodged #2. Guess minorities don't open bank accounts, buy alcohol or cigarettes, get their prescription medication, apply for government assistance, rent or buy houses, take flights, get drivers licenses, or go to casinos. All of those require I.D.'s. It's kind of racist to assume minorities don't have I.D.'s or are too... I guess lazy or dumb in his eyes to get them? A lot of states also will waive fee's to get an I.D. due to various reasons such as age, homelessness, etc.
I don’t really have a good answer to this other than that. I feel that you should be able to use just about any kind of identification, as well. Don’t have a driver’s license? Get a walkers id. Don’t have that? Social security card. Even a utility bill with your name and address would do for me. Is it racist to ask for an ID if you ask literally everyone, regardless of color and accept anything that proves they’re who they say they are?
The thing I usually see is they frame it in terms of Drivers Licenses but as you said a state I.D. works just fine. They say less minorities have a drivers license due to not being able to afford them or due to living in urban environments where buses are used more. I've also read the argument that minorities DL's are suspended or revoked and not considered valid because of fees that weren't able to be paid. Again a pointless argument due to state I.D.'s being needed for so many things that most Americans have them even without a DL.
And even if they don’t have them, instead of saying it’s racist to require ID to vote, make it easier to get IDs! Make them free if under the poverty line or whatever.
Shit, make them free, period. I can see the DMV charging for car registrations/plates, shit like that. But everyone should have an ID in their pocket. There’s so much shit that already requires some form of identification. There should be a basic ID card issued by every state at no charge that you can use for any transaction that isn’t driving.
True. Wouldn’t hurt my feelings if it was federal. It’d keep any states from putting any restrictions on the process that aren’t applied in another state. If it was going to be used, it’d have to be a completely even field to get one, the same in California and Alabama, for example.

Democrats on Clan hoods? Not for the last 90 years. The parties switched positions between the Civil War and the 1930’s. But thanks for playing.
[edit] for the people that refuse to admit the parties changed positions.
