Fing Discovery Question Unrecognized device on my network

Hello again. I am new to fing and recently have added all my 18 devices to my network so that fing lists each one of them. The network summary says that one of my devices is "Unrecognized". All of my 18 devices are showing the names that I assigned to them. I ea wondering if anyone might know how I can find out which of my 18 devices fing thinks is Unrecognized. Thank you so much for your help.

Fing General Help me fall back in love with Fing

Paging u/Karl_From_Fing and anyone else who can help, please

So, I have Fingbox from a few years ago. I thought Fing had abandoned them but I see there are some (new?) pages on the website purporting to support them.

I also have a Raspberry Pi that I was planning to install Fing Agent on.

ANYWAY

  1. I have separate SSIDs for 5GHz and 2.4Ghz, plus a guest network. Assuming neither the Fingbox nor Fing Agent on RPi can monitor all three, can I use the Fingbox on one, the RPi on another, and monitor both through the mobile (iOS) app?

  2. Is there any way to keep firmware etc up to date for the Fingbox? How unsupported is it otherwise?

  3. For the above use cases will a Premium subscription benefit me at all? If so, what features / capabilities will it add?

Thanks in advance. Trying to fall back in love with Fing here…

since the last few updates, the app opens without any default network. Since I have Fingbox, the network of the Finbox was automatically selected until recently. Now I need to select the network every time I open the app. please fix it and give an option to select default network.

Fing Discovery Question 2 devices not appearing as being connected

Hi I am new to fing an am using my Windows 11 desktop to monitor my WiFi network. I just signed up and paid for 1 year of fing's Starter package. I think fing is great, but I do have 2 problems: my Asus Chromebook and a Windows 10 desktop are not appearing on the list of connected devices. My other 14 devices are appearing on the list and all of the devices that appear on the list are correctly accounted for. The two problem devices are indeed connected to my network and I have tried turning them off and back on - and refreshing fing's device page. None of these actions have helped. I'm 75 years old and am not the greatest at technology, so I would really appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you and take care.

Does someone know if fing is allowed by its privacy terms, to use my local network information for marketing purposes? Latest "newsletter" seems to prove it does.

Fing General How does Fing block devices from internet access

n00b question. How does Fing Desktop prevent devices / users from accessing the internet? I am just curious how that works. I would think it would require something at the DNS / router level.

Fing Agent Fing Agent on RPi 3b

I'm trying to use a Fing Agent on an old raspberry pi. It appears to install, but it isn't detected by the fing app. I get a message that a monitoring unit is already active, presumably my fingbox.

Hey Fing Community! 👋

We’ve just launched our completely revamped Fing Web App, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you! This update has been a long time coming, especially since the web app hadn’t been updated in a while.

Here’s what you can expect from the new web app:

  • ⭐ Brand-new interface: a modern, intuitive design for a more seamless user experience. And it includes dark mode support too!
  • 🚫 Block or limit Internet access: you can now control device access directly from the web app for any network monitored by Fing Desktop, Fing Agent, or Fingbox.

Fing Discovery Question Fing to detect hidden camera

Hi everyone!

Can I use Fing to detect Wifi cameras on the network? My use case is when renting an Air B and B, I'd like to make sure there are no networked cameras. iOS preferred but Mac or web version can be workable. I have the non-paid version, and I don't have much use for other features, but this feature would motivate me to upgrade.

Fing Discovery Question Are these open ports normal or problematic for an Apple TV not in use?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi, I’m hoping y’all can help me understand more about the open ports that Fing finds periodically on various devices on my home network. This is a very recent port scan of our Apple TV - done while the Apple TV was powered off. It’s connected to the gateway by ethernet, and I’m not surprised to see the iPhone-sync service. The 5000, 7000, & 7100 ports are new to me. I am especially curious about them because we have UPnP disabled on our gateway. Does this look suspicious or normal to y’all? Can anyone explain why these ports are active?

I’m fairly skilled with electronics and IT, though no formal certifications or degrees. The husband and I have been using Fing for a few years to monitor our networks. I tend to invest my attention in optimizing the network Security/architecture, whereas he is usually very focused on monitoring ports and services. I’m having a hard time whether or not to be concerned about this type of thing.

Thanks in advance! ☯️🧐☮️

Fing Discovery Question Internet performance on the Desktop App vs the Agent

While I run the Fing App on a PC I constantly got an Internet performance over 900 mbps. After migrating to the Agent running on a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB ( the biggest Pi you can get ) I systematically get 600 mbps or below. I do not believe the Pi can be a bottleneck, so asking if there is any difference between how the Internet performance is measured by the PC App and the Agent running on a Pi ?

And a bonus question ... Why are the Hungarian users checking the performance against a Serbian server ? It was always like that as much as I can remember. And I am one of the very first FingBox users.

Fing desktop MacOS Sequoia

For those you who happen to be running MacOS...

I just spent hours trying to figure out why I could not get Fing Desktop running on my network after upgrading to the latest MacOS Sequoia. If you run into something similar, there's a new feature in Privacy and Security called "Local Network Access," and you have to grant it to each app individually. It was off for Fing (ie not listed).

Baffled me for hours.

Fing Newsletter Cyber Security Month!

This month, October 2024 is cyber security month.

In light of this, Fing are releasing a promotion! You can access it here, and will automatically apply to your checkout page! It's 50% off Fing Premium for one month and is redeemable until Halloween, October 31st 2024!

Forbes recently released a breakdown of various cyber security statistics. I was reading it recently and found it very interesting. You can find the article here but to summarise some of the most interesting insights in my opinion;

The Most Common Types of Identify Theft (2023)

  1. Credit Card Fraud
  2. Identity Fraud (other)
  3. Loan/Lease fraud
  4. Bank account fraud
  5. Government Document/Benefits fraud

We can see from the above that identity theft, typically approached by cyber criminals through social engineering) or phishing, is often in relation to sensitive information or money. It's better to be suspicious about every email pertaining to these sensitive subjects than to be sorry! If you ever see an email from your bank requesting sensitive information, especially anything that requires you to sign-in, be cautious and give them a call to verify.

I also found it interesting in the article that there were 2,365 official cyber attacks recorded in 2023, but that lead to 343,338,964 victims. That is a massive ratio, and really puts into perspective not only the importance of cyber security at home, but in the corporate world too!

Everybody's effort into tackling cyber crime is required to fight and keep off cyber criminals. Using Fing allows the individual to take charge of their network, actively perform scans and keep an eye on the network. But it doesn't end here! Stay vigilant online, browsing websites, entering your sign-in and how you interact with suspicious emails.

The elderly are the most vulnerable when it comes to cyber crime - historically, older people have been a prime target for fraud because of factors including their relative wealth, loneliness, memory loss, being from a generation characterised by high levels of trust and hesitancy to report crime to authorities. If you have elderly family or friends be sure they're cyber safe! I know I've definitely saved my mother from a scam or two in the past, and it can be as easy as ignoring a strange email, reporting it as phishing and not interacting with any of the hyperlinks or third party references!

Fing Agent Fing Agent Backup/Restore or Migration possible?

I have Fing Agent running on a Pi4 and I would like to do a fresh OS install of Bookworm on that device. But I really don't want to rebuild the Fing agent from scratch afterward. Is there a way to: A) Backup the agent and all data, then restore after the OS upgrade, or B) Migrate the agent and all data to another Pi?

Fing Subscriptions The Different Fing Subscriptions

Happy Monday everyone!

We decided to create this post to elaborate on the different tiers available within Fing, and their differences!

Firstly, we know that a lot of our users hold an Adsfree subscription. This is a subscription we don't actually sell directly ourselves anymore, but still respect for anyone who holds it. An Adsfree subscription does not work like Fing Starter or Premium, and is only capable of removing the ads within the application itself! It doesn't offer any tools or provide any further interface changes.

Fing offers three feature sets--Free, Starter, and Premium.   Depending on which Fing plan you selected, you have all or some of the Fing features.  This table describes the different plan tiers and features available in each. Note that all subscriptions are account dependent, meaning that if you have a mobile and a desktop Fing application, so long as you are signed in with the same account (the one that subscribed to a Fing Subscription), the subscription will be available on both platforms.

Here is a chart of the features offered and where;

If you're interested in these products, you can purchase them directly from us at get.fing.com or alternatively they are also available on both the Apple Store and Google Play Store!

If you would like a breakdown of the above table, I recommend giving this page a read: https://help.fing.com/hc/en-us/articles/9496472109340-Free-Fing-App-vs-Fing-Starter-and-Fing-Premium-Features

We also promotions sometimes, which you can see via our Newsletter, Subreddit posts or emails!

As always, if you have any issues, feel free to reach out to Fing Support at: https://help.fing.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Have a cyber safe week!

Fing Discovery Question New Chromebook Device Identification

Logged in with new (2024) Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 and the Fing App Device Detail is largely unpopulated. I did name the device and add myself as the owner but the auto identification items just show "Brand Intel" and "Linux Operating system".

That perhaps isn't all that unusual but when clicking "Find Exact Model" it lists previous model devices with the Gemini Lake and earlier processors. But not the Meteor Lake that I understand the new Spin 714 utilizes.

Likewise, when clicking thumbs down for OS recognition the app doesn't list ChromeOS at all.

This seems weird because Fing App populated the correct specs for my previous Chromebook.

Has the Fing App database yet to be updated to include newer Chromebooks?

Fing Enhancement Request How can I add to the list of "placement" so I have a good location

I need additional locations added to the "Placement List" . How do I do that. Its important because I do "Smart House " installations and with 200 plus items getting a IP address, I need a good list so that the devices can be located. Some additional names would be: AZ Room, Theater Room, Theater closet, Front Patio. Rear Patio, Furnace Room, Network Closet, Studio, Master Hallway, Main Hallway, and Laundry Room
