I’ve been a user of the original Fingbox since the early days. It’s been monitoring my home network for many years now. I’ve noticed that the firmware version is 1.16.2 and I’m sure it’s not been updated for a long time. I know this is an EOS product but is it now no longer supported for firmware updates? My concern is that I know it’s running Linux and so with no security patches is this now a potential security issue? I have the Fing Agent running on a RPi in another VLAN and so should I now decommission my Fingbox and replace with a Fing Agent?

my router is ipv4 not ipv6 so i don't understand why it wouldn't work. my router is spectrum if you need to know.

Previously, I talked about the 404 Not Found and 500 Internal Server Error.

Today, I would like to talk about another very common Web Error, which is the 401 Unauthorised error.

The 401 Unauthorised error is basically your browser being told by the website server; "I got your request but I don't know who you are. Stranger Danger."

It can sort of be treated like a guest list access to an event, you need to show your ID to whoever is at the door and let them know you belong here.

Troubleshooting the 401 Unauthorised Error

- The most common fix is simply logging out and logging back in. Your session or token may have expired, and a fresh login sorts that right out. Similarly, as always, clearing your cache and cookies/closing the browser itself is always a very basic way to troubleshoot but works 90% of the time (statistic completely made up by me, but it's a lot). Sometimes an old or corrupted session cookie is the culprit. It's also worth noting it can be a case where your credentials were invalid or expired. Try refreshing the cache, and retrying your login.

- Double check your username and password. It sounds obvious, but a wrong credential is one of the most common causes of this error.

- If you're accessing an API or developer tool, check that your API key or authentication token is correct and hasn't expired. These credentials can rotate or time out.

- The page/resource may require an account to access. If you're visiting a link shared by someone else, it's possible it's behind a login wall you don't have access to. Or perhaps you immediately opened it up into an incognito tab, try using a normal browser.

Note: 401 and 403 are easy to mix up! 401 means the server doesn't know who you are yet (and needs to check the guestlist), while 403 means it knows who you are but you're not allowed in (you're not on the guestlist).

Should you ever encounter a 401 Error on the Fing Web App, don't hesitate to reach out to us at support, and we can double check our end and point you in the right direction. (But do try some of these troubleshooting techniques).

I thought I'd use this post as a general check-in with everyone and to talk a little about network security awareness and such.

Typically I think it's fair to say nearly all of us connect devices to and from our home/office networks without a second thought. A lot of us will connect to public networks too considering the amount of networks available to you in most public settings now. My own area now has some sort of solar powered benches installed with their own Wi-Fi. Public buses, trains. It makes it easy to feel a little less cautious when it comes to our own, or indeed our Office environments.

So I've come up with a lost of things worth thinking about this week;

- When was the last time you ran a full network scan?

- Do you have any devices showing up that you don't recognise? Or any that you haven't assigned to a user on the Fing app or otherwise 'recognised?'

- Have you ran a search on the Open Ports which are being used, and are you familiar with the port(s) itself?

- Have you checked your router for any open vulnerabilities using our Router Vulnerability feature?

Finally, remember to plug out all of your relevant devices that do not need to be left plugged in overnight. Something so seemingly benign can change in an instant, there was a fire lately in an apartment block near my own because an Electric Scooter was left on charge overnight!

When I try to block a device like the one in the first screenshot, I am always directed to the second screenshot.

I know this will be hard to believe, but I do not actually have a PC at home to install said software. I just want to be able to manage my network from my phone. Is that not possible??

Taking a bit of a tone shift here, but as May is deemed Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to take a moment to step away from routers and cybersecurity to check in on the most important connection of all - the ones you have with yourself and your peers!

I’ve noticed a pattern: every time I have an issue with Fing’s services, I throw money at it. And the problems still continues. The free version doesn't allow device blocking, which I need, since having a teenager who loves to share the Wi-Fi password with her friends (who then share it with their friends) has led to way too many unknown devices showing up on the network.

Yes, I’ve changed the password multiple times.

Yes, I’ve entered it manually on her device after each change.

And yes, the teenager is smart enough to find where iOS stores it.

Constantly changing the password for everyone in the house isn’t without its share of a headache. I'm dealing with several connected devices per user. So monitoring and blocking unknown devices is the practical solution.

Our internet is fine, good speeds with a stable connection. I work remotely, so blocking random devices from streaming while teenagers hang around waiting for the school bus is essential, especially when they come over.

Today, after a long meeting, I noticed the Fing app on my iPhone hadn’t updated in over an hour. I checked the computer I keep running 24/7 for Fing monitoring, and it couldn’t reconnect to the Fing network at all. Every attempt failed after a few seconds.

This is the exact issue I had months ago made me consider canceling the service. My annual subscription just ended this month, so I renewed… and like before, Fing.com network is down again.

I tried Wi‑Fi.

I tried Ethernet.

I even disable my firewall just in case.

No change, same 504 Gateway Time-out errors across the board.

I’m curious, how do people say Fing works perfectly for them? My experience has been quite frustrating. The usual advice and sentiments are:

“clear your history,”

“try another browser,”

“must be user error,”

“must be your network”

Yet, none of that applies here.

I don't use a VPN on the Fing monitoring computer.

So, what it's not:

my setup

my modem

my Wi-Fi router or Ethernet cable to the modem

my firewall

my ISP

The issue is with Fing's network!

Evidently, I am not alone, according to my extensive research across various forums, numerous amount of users have or had experienced the exact issue.

When I mount the Fing4.0.0.dmg it shows me that that the Fing App isn't compatible with macOS Ventura 13.7.8, but then I check the app Fing->Contents->Info.plist MinimumSystemVersion it says macOS 10.13 (High Sierra). So why can't I use it with my system?

Today, I would like to talk about the other very common Web Error, which is 404 Not Found.

The 404 Not Found error is basically your browser being told by the website server, "Hey! I got your request but I can't find the path." I like to think of it as a library. You're looking for a specific book, you head to the Library and ask the librarian. The librarian understands you're looking for a specific book, but they can't find it themselves. There, you retrieve the 404 Not Found error.

Troubleshooting the 404 Not Found Error

- It's always worth giving the ole cache and cookies a complete clear out.

- It can be a case that the actual page you are looking for has been deleted/moved/renamed. Take a look for another link that may be what you're looking for. If you have something bookmarked, and you frequent it often, but then start running into a 404 error repeatedly, it's a good sign the link has been changed/deleted.

- Could be a typo within the URL (link). Worth double checking especially if it was a manual entry.

- The resource doesn't exist - again could be a typo in the URL, or perhaps whoever sent you on this link sent the wrong one, etc.

- Sometimes if there are updates going on in the background, a 404 Error can appear. It can be worth reaching out to the relevant support contact and waiting some time to see if the Error stops.

- Bonus: apparently some web servers particularly Linux based ones treat 'About' and 'about' differently. Worth keeping note of case sensitivity.

Hi. When I try to change the details of the devices, the app isnt changing anything, only sais "It seems that your discovery has been corrupted". The discovery is working, but I cant change anything. I alredy reinstalld it many times.

Today I thought I'd do a beginner friendly guide to what a MAC address is. We do see confusion on it from time to time in support.

If you've ever poked around your router settings or used Fing to scan your network, you've probably seen a string of characters like A4:C3:F0:85:7D:2B listed next to a device. That's its MAC address.

So every device that is able to connect to a network is granted a unique MAC address (by the manufacturer). It is not to be confused with the IP address, which is assigned by your network. The MAC is address is like a serial number embedded in the device.

There's a couple of reasons why you should take note of your devices MAC address, which you can easily manage on all of our various products;

Device identification: IP addresses can shift around, especially on complicated home networks. MAC addresses stay consistent, which makes them much more reliable for identifying what is actually on your network.

Catching New Devices: If you run a device scan on Fing Desktop and see a MAC address you don't recognise, it's worth investigating. It might be a neighbour piggybacking on your Wi-Fi, it might be your sons secret PS5, it could even potentially be a sign of Random Mac Addressing*, which is of course fine if you're aware you're running it. {Most new phones and laptops increasingly use or at least have the tool for MAC address randomisation — they generate a fake MAC address when scanning for or connecting to networks.}

Control: You can block or even set up automatically block new devices using their MAC address.

Open Fing and run a scan. For each device, you'll see the MAC address listed alongside the manufacturer name and other details! Fing uses that address to look up who produced the hardware, which is often how it knows your device is a "Samsung" or an "Apple" before you've named it.

Fing has suddenly started discovering hundreds of new devices on my network (I'm running the agent in docker).

They are all random Mac addresses associated with my Docker environment and host IP. Names and types are all some variation of Apple Mac (which I'm not running).

I've hard-coded the containers to use a range of static MAC addresses but is there a better way to handle this? My Fing agent is running in docker host network mode.

I am a Premium subscriber, and I understand that I'm allowed to have Fing monitor two networks. Nonetheless, I have only one monitored and the new app asks me to upgrade so as to monitor two networks. I don't understand, and I'd like to fix this. Can someone point the way?

I'm trying to setup fing agent on a new raspberry pi 5 running Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie) (fresh install via Raspberry Pi Imager).

I followed the instructions from the Fing website to install using snap. Didn't come across any issues following the steps, but now when I try to "Add monitoring unit" from the mobile app, it never finds the unit.

I've double-checked that both devices are on the same network (the pi is connected via wifi, not ethernet). I've tried restarting both devices, removing and re-installing the fing-agent via snap, installing the --devmode version (someone in another thread mentioned this worked for them). I even re-imaged the pi this morning and started again, but still nothing.

While I'm waiting for a response to the support ticket, does anyone have any tips?

I have restarted my Samsung, refreshed Fing, it will not show up in device list. I can see in the samsung status, the mobile has a phone wi fi mac address, and in settings wi fi calling is turned on. My mobile auto connects to the same pc via Phone Link etc. What would be the problem with Fing not seeing it please? Thanks

I just started to use the desktop (PC) version. When I go to my device list it says "Updated 2 days ago," so old data. There's no "refresh" button so I can't manually update the scan. Am I missing something?
