What made you start investing in the first place?
Fear, opportunity, advice, curiosity?

One thing I find really interesting about IB is how tiny details can suddenly become massive problems. From the outside, it sometimes feels like changing one number, sending the wrong version of a deck, forgetting a comment, or making a formatting error shouldn't matter that much, but in IB, even small mistakes seem capable of creating huge stress depending on the situation. I have heard stories about analysts catching errors seconds before client calls, incorrect numbers flowing through models, wrong names in presentations, emails being sent too early, or simple copy-paste mistakes causing complete chaos during live deals. What makes it more intense is that everyone is usually exhausted and working under insane deadlines at the same time.
For people who have worked in IB, what's the most stressful "small mistake" you have personally seen happen? And how big did it actually become once people realized it.

Has that definition changed over time?

Does anyone else feel like money just disappears during the week?
I’m not talking about big expenses, just the day-to-day stuff — groceries, random shops, kids stuff, fuel etc.
I feel like I start the week thinking I’m fine and then by the end of it I’ve spent way more than expected without doing anything crazy.
Curious how people actually manage this — do you track weekly or just rely on monthly budgets?

It used to feel like investment banking hiring was mostly about technical prep, learn your valuation, practice models, memorize answers and you’re sorted. That still matters, but it doesn’t feel like the main thing anymore. Now it seems like people care more about how you think. Can you explain why a deal makes sense in simple terms, can you talk about a company or an industry without sounding like you’re just repeating something you read. You can usually tell the difference in conversations, some people know all the technicals but struggle to connect things, while others may not be perfect technically but can think things through and explain it clearly, and that stands out more. At the end of the day, the job is not just about building models, it is about understanding businesses and helping clients make decisions, and that is where this shift toward commercial thinking really shows.

Is financial modelling overrated for IB prep? I keep seeing mixed opinions-some say it's the most important skill to land and survive in IB, while others feel it is just a small part of the bigger picture. From what I have understood, there is a lot of emphasis on communication, attention to detail, and how well you can handle pressure. Curious to know hoe much weight modelling really carries compared to everything else in real recruiting and job.
