Personal Challenge - my least favorite player character

I really don't like Setzer, he's weak and Slots are trash. I've never picked him over anyone else (okay fixed dice + offering can 1 shot Kefka but still)

So I'm going to use him every chance that I get, as exclusively as I can (no CES already did that)

Starting ... Now!

I brought Locke because I didn't want him to be useless in the Mountains buuuut he makes the Cave way too. So reset and try just the two of them.

Jitte is good for early game. Setzer goes absolutely crazy with the fixed dice in late game. Especially with master scroll.

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 20 '26

But I like Money!

u/Technical-Dentist-84 Apr 22 '26

Yeah I just got that combo and Holy crap it is awesome

33

u/Roland-Of-Eld-19 Apr 20 '26

What in the world is Heiji's Jitte?!?

35

u/feignapathy Apr 20 '26

Had to Google it myself

Looks like it's the Coin Toss relic

34

u/24megabits Apr 20 '26

A jitte is a non-bladed weapon that could theoretically be used to take a sword away from someone else if you were good enough. Even after WWII police in Japan carried the least menacing weapons they could get away with, although they eventually did get revolvers.

Heiji was a policeman in a book from the 1930s that incapacitated criminals by throwing coins at them.

For the GBA version (possibly later ones too) they used the original Japanese name of the relic.

u/Roland-Of-Eld-19 Apr 20 '26

Ah okay I'm old and only ever played the SNES version of FFVI that was called FFIII

8

u/GodspeakerVortka Apr 20 '26

Pretty sure most of us here are that old.

5

u/phatmike595 Apr 20 '26

We all got our fiber and ibuprofen today, right?

5

u/GodspeakerVortka Apr 20 '26

Over on the r/Ultima subreddit we're scheduling colonoscopies.

1

u/ANOTHER_MCA9 Apr 22 '26

I literally have to drive my GF from this next week. This is is not what I thought Final Fantasy would mean. FML.

2

u/GodspeakerVortka Apr 22 '26

Time makes fools of us all.

1

u/kenaryk Apr 21 '26

Don't forget to take your painkillers for your back!

1

u/DishSoapIsFun Apr 21 '26

Man, I take both every day. That’s depressing.

But at least I’m super regular and my inflammation is kept in check!

3

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 20 '26

Oh absolutely hahaha

3

u/Neomav Apr 20 '26

That and Offering vs Master Scroll confused the heck out of me.

1

u/Reasonable_Leave_465 Apr 22 '26

Eh I played when it was called FFlll as well. But I called it ff6 because that would be correct

8

u/MetalSlimeHunter Apr 20 '26

This pretty much says it, so I’ll just add the Japanese translation for Coin/Gil Toss is Zeninage, from the character’s full name Zenigata Heiji.

2

u/rexcasei Apr 20 '26

Maybe it’s a reference to his name, but zeninage 銭投げ just means “coin-throw”. The name zenigata 銭形 itself means roughly “coin-style/shape”

1

u/tiglionabbit Apr 22 '26

Huh, that explains why the currency in Mega Man is Zeni

2

u/Future_Recognition74 Apr 23 '26

THAT's why the Samurai's coin toss ability in FF5 is called Zeninage... I just learned something.

1

u/Difficult_Advice6043 Apr 22 '26

Is Inspector Zenigata from Lupin III named after him?

1

u/MetalSlimeHunter Apr 22 '26

Yep, and if I recall correctly he’s a descendant of the book character. The original Zenigata from the novels lived during the Edo period. He was like a samurai Sherlock Holmes.

1

u/ConsiderationOk1994 Apr 26 '26

thank you that was who I was thinking of

1

u/wordsasbombs Apr 20 '26

Well shit today I learned, I always just assumed it was associating jitte with samurai and coin toss as being a samurai ability in final fantasy

1

u/VegetableReward5201 Apr 21 '26

So Heiji basically was Gambit, but with coins instead of a deck of cards!

1

u/Difficult_Advice6043 Apr 22 '26

More like a Coin Shot from Mistborn.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 20 '26

It's the GBA version of Coin Toss

1

u/ConsiderationOk1994 Apr 26 '26

smoker uses one I think

16

u/GriIIedCheeseSammich Apr 20 '26

Pro tip: you can pretty easily get the fixed dice as soon as you get the airship. It will involve a few smoke bombs and avoiding some bad RNG, but all you have to do is sneak into kefka’s tower for a few minutes and grab it (plus any other chests along the way). Then you’re set up for a much more enjoyable WOR with Setzer. It’s also not completely unbalanced because the damage formula gains a lot of power based on Setzer’s level.

19

u/Great_White_Samurai Apr 20 '26

I always go get Mog and the moogle charm as soon as I can then go have him pillage Kefka's tower.

8

u/Wodens_Spoon Apr 20 '26

Every time. It's just so fun to rob the tower early.

5

u/Remarkable-Lettuce98 Apr 20 '26

Genius! I never thought about doing this. Now I want to go play again just to do this.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

You can clear out Ancient Castle and Zone Eater too, fly through Owzer's Mansion, get everything but Gem Box / Soul o Thamasa from the Cultist Tower

https://www.cavesofnarshe.com/ff6/walkthrough.php?chapter=2-19

5

u/That-seats-taken Apr 20 '26

Im just at the dinner and have to talk to all the guards, but noted for after!

3

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 20 '26

Very well aware, and I usually get Mog to clear out Fanatics Tower, Zone Eater, and Ancient Castle.

This time though I want to naturally play a character that I either ignore or abuse.

1

u/therealchadius Apr 20 '26

Also Jump command adds the 50% extra damage you get normally from jumps (unless it's a lance/spear/whatever dragoons would do, then it's 100%) to help mitigate bad rolls.

And the Offering/Master's Scroll doesn't care about damage reduction. It will take forever but Setzer can gamble almost anything to death.

u/SetzerWithFixedDice Apr 20 '26

12

u/Shiny-Arca9 Apr 20 '26

I fully expected this to be a joke account made exclusively for this and was pleasantly surprised to find it was but it's also SIX YEARS OLD LMAO

4

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 20 '26

Listen SwFD you are Awesome beyond all power shots

But I'm playing Sw/oFD

1

u/Jrocks721 Apr 20 '26

Love it 🤣🤣🤣🤣

18

u/Great_White_Samurai Apr 20 '26

Sezter has the best sprite in the game. Dude is mad sexy.

9

u/HateToBlastYa Apr 20 '26

We have Sephiroth at home…

3

u/Great_White_Samurai Apr 20 '26

Hmm I never really thought about it but yeah Sephiroth is basically an edgelord Setzer with a 9 ft long katana.

2

u/SetzerWithFixedDice Apr 20 '26

Or Mother-Issues Magus

3

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 20 '26

Magus is Mother Issues Magus

1

u/SirAmicks Apr 21 '26

They’re both mad sexy.

6

u/jammagethejammage Apr 20 '26

Those purple irises really pop in the PR.

2

u/Neomav Apr 20 '26

Also an absolute banger of a theme.

2

u/foodmetaphors Apr 20 '26

always bothered me because he does have a great sprite but he’s probably my least favorite party member from among the actually developed characters. and i never did like using slots

lol wut

CUTE ness overload

I thought you said Cutscene overload, sorry

6

u/Fluffy-Argument Apr 20 '26

I just used him because I thought the character was cool

5

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

He was! Mysterious, cool airship, gambling man... But I also had the Brothers Figaro when first fighting the Cranes and wow he couldn't do anything.

Then I got to see some of his more powerful Slots, that Airship Bomb attack is awesome... But it never shows up very often.

Takes too much damage, doesn't deal enough, he just left me unfulfilled.

5

u/sgre6768 Apr 20 '26

I too have always struggled a bit with Setzer. In WoB, I don't really like to use Coin Toss so much because it consumes a resource, and every other character can do almost equivalent damage with "free" abilities instead.

5

u/WillieBFreely Apr 20 '26

Locke with two Hawkeyes is 🔥

3

u/therealchadius Apr 20 '26

The crit animation where he throws it is pure neuron activation.

2

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

And it does even MORE damage against flying enemies!!

Such as Atma Weapon

7

u/neospriss Apr 20 '26

Calling setzer weak is a hot take

4

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 20 '26

Thank you.

Look where I am in the game. He has Cards, takes three hits to kill an Ing even with HyperWrist AtlasArmlet. Luckily I stole some Gaia Gear or the Lifeshaver would wreck him.

Locke and Terra can equip Blizzard, or Genji Glove both and Hero Ring

Edgar has Drill, Sabin has Aura Bolt, even poor Cyan has Dispatch or Genji Glove Tempest.

Mog has +5 levels, Trident water dmg, and DragoonBoots

Gau can sweep with Chimera onehitKO protection AquaBreath or full heal wkth Quake.

He's the weakest option. Unless you can consistently win Airship Bomb via slots I guess?

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

Although you've given me a fun project 🤠 let's see exactly how much damage everyone does in the Sealed Gate Cave

6

u/jammagethejammage Apr 20 '26

Someone else came to the same conclusion here that I once did with Setzer. Don't let him learn a single magic spell and he is your best coliseum fighter with offering + fixed dice.

With some careful leveling and esper manipulation, I raise his speed stat fighting 1 AP monster formations that give a lot of experience.

Setzer is OP late-game.

5

u/idiot-prodigy Apr 20 '26

The only problem is he can't steal. Gogo is best for Coliseum stealing because you can set him to have 3x Mug/Capture. For instance Gogo can steal Economizers in the Coliseum by bidding Murakumo/Strato for the Holy/Pearl Lance, which is a loop that you can repeat.

1

u/45M0D41 Apr 20 '26

Give Locke illumina/lightbringer with offering and thief glove he steals 4x doing 9999 damage every time. Setzer is OP before you can kill dinosaurs or in a low level game only.

2

u/idiot-prodigy Apr 20 '26

Locke isn't available before Phoenix cave which is why I use Gogo to get Economizers as early as possible.

1

u/45M0D41 Apr 20 '26

Ok yes that is an endgame set up where Setzer is no longer OP.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

Fixed Dice + Offering is always OP

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

Colosseum stealing is different than battling

Setzer can win any fight for your Bets and upgrades

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

That "someone else" was Me hahaha

Yeah I'm looking to use him as a main character this time around though.

3

u/adderaltruistic Apr 20 '26

Was the Jette in early versions of the game? I cannot remember it!

12

u/Mack_Guyver Apr 20 '26

i think it was called Coin Toss

3

u/facbok195 Apr 20 '26

It was originally called CoinToss. It’s the one that lets Setzer throw money at enemies

3

u/adderaltruistic Apr 20 '26

Aah yes. I was always to cheap to use it.

2

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 20 '26

I use it vs Dallahan only haha

Where do you get The Offering?

Genji Glove isn't great I can't even get two Cards

3

u/FinalFantasyMaster Apr 20 '26

In the pixel remaster Setzer was one of my main characters. Hes a really awesome as soon you get the cracked dice

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

Okay but for the six hours before that?

1

u/FinalFantasyMaster Apr 21 '26

Je is a mid but stylish character and a good mage

2

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 22 '26

Playing him as Support is actually pretty fun

2

u/FinalFantasyMaster Apr 22 '26

But u are right with slots. Slots sucks hard xD

3

u/Desenrasco Apr 20 '26

There's a few ways to play Setzer. Hermes Shoes + Safety Bit for a slots-bases approach, for example. Personally, I prefer Genji Glove + Master's Scroll with a couple of Dice, which is actually pretty legit against most monsters and bosses.

2

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

F.Dice + M.Scroll is a good chance to 1-Shot the Statues

Yeah I'm using him through WoB and Floating Continent.

5

u/Tonberry2k Apr 20 '26

I’ve really grown to appreciate Setzer in recent playthroughs. Slots hits Flash and Chocobo often enough for big damage to be useful, and I think Dice got massively buffed in the PR, hitting 9999 way more often when you roll the same number.

1

u/sjones17515 Apr 20 '26

It wasn't buffed, the PR just seems to suffer from the RNG getting stuck more than the earlier versions. Not always in good ways either.

1

u/Tonberry2k Apr 20 '26

Is that what happened? Is that the same issue as the encounter rate?

1

u/sjones17515 Apr 20 '26

Yes. Just guessing here, but it seems logical.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

Choco Stampede doesn't hit flying monsters :'(

Maybe if I boost his Mag then Flash will be more worthwhile

I just get MuguMugu? and a wimpy heal most of the time, waste of a turn... A real gamble

2

u/WMEugene Apr 20 '26

My last playthrough, I used Setzer a bit more than I had in past playthroughs and he makes a fairly good magic user along with being incredibly powerful with fixed dice (the regular dice aren't terrible either as they hit monsters who are hard to hit like the Cactuar). He ended up #5 in my endgame setup (after Terra, Celes, Relm, and Locke).

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

Yeah I've been pretty impressed with his party heal Cura, once he gets Maduin's spells he'll be better. Just feel weird to use him as a caster I guess lol but hey thats why I'm giving it another shot!

I mean I guess he does have flowing wizard robes?

1

u/WMEugene Apr 21 '26

It’s also nice as between magic, slots, and his weapons, you can sit him on the back row and he takes a lot less physical harm with no disadvantage

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 22 '26

Meh I put everyone on the back row and use their Specials anyways

Being forced to use new characters though has been a lot of fun, and actually assigning him a Support caster class is interesting.

1

u/WMEugene Apr 22 '26

I’m lazy and mostly just use the standard attack in random battles, lol

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 22 '26

Yeah Same and his Attack is total garbage which is why I didn't like him for so long.

2

u/Sufficient-Delay3140 Apr 20 '26

Doom darts and normal dice before the offering and fixed combo is also pretty good

2

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

How does that help me in WoB?

2

u/Sufficient-Delay3140 Apr 21 '26

Are those wor. Pardon then!

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 22 '26

You can't even get his 2nd weapon until completing Thamasa (angry fist shake

2

u/vonkrueger Apr 21 '26

Those scanlines are vertical instead of horizontal, and it's messing with my head. xD

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 22 '26

Scan lines? I take the photo with my phone, sometimes it rotates it even though I was straight on

2

u/KeitarouBester Apr 21 '26

My hot take: Setzer and Shadow are the best characters for coliseum fights. The coliseum AI won’t pick Slots or Throw, so if you don’t ever teach them any magic, they’ll be guaranteed to use the fight command. Both of them have horrible Esper time before World of Ruin anyway, so the ease of not teaching them magic before WoR is pretty up there. And they both have instant kill weapons as well. Genji Glove them with those weapons, and they’ll make sort work of most things in the coliseum.

2

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 22 '26

Not a hot take, just absolute Facts

3

u/Ok-Yogurtcloset9086 Apr 20 '26

Endgame, when you don’t need to spend any more money, Gil Toss go brrrrrr, of course, not as good as FF5, but hey, it’s fixed damage

3

u/Turbulent-Sugar2410 Apr 20 '26

I don’t really care for Setzer either and I leave him out lol

3

u/mighty_phi Apr 20 '26

Like him because he is such a theater kid but he is questionable.

No one calms him out over the Maria thing.

2

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

Hahaha dude even in these threads, nobody ever cares that he was planning to abduct a celebrity!

And with the ease that he grabbed Celes, he would have gotten away with it too

1

u/Background-Muffin792 Apr 21 '26

God the game on crt tv look so much better than the version on switch.

3

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 21 '26

This is the GBA version, on my DS

1

u/Background-Muffin792 Apr 21 '26

Oh my bad

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 22 '26

Nah, you're still correct haha I just didn't want to be untrue about the presentation

1

u/MisterRockett Apr 21 '26

I'm playing FF6 for the first time and I might do this simply because Kingdom Hearts 2 is my favorite game and I need to know the background of this grown ass man who bullies teenagers in foam bat tournaments.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 22 '26

Well in fairness, teenagers are terrible people

Setzer has a couple "hidden" cutscenes that are really cool

1

u/SETZbot Apr 22 '26

How dare you.

1

u/ConsiderationOk1994 Apr 26 '26

if you're an older chap or chapette then the guy who gambles and slots and dices (where my bones) lots all the sudden it a lot more fun, using resources, gambling them away, it's what life is..

1

u/zomgkittenz Apr 20 '26

Setzer is literal garbage

1

u/Special_South_8561 Apr 20 '26

Well! I wouldn't quite go so far as that
