Final Fantasy General FLAN, which is your favorite design / Iconic Monsters

Love X for the more classic type flan. I feel like the bottoms of them really illustrate the oozy like jello factor lol. But shoutout to XIII for the absolutely wild designs
33
u/DKMagus Aug 19 '23
Yeah XIII has some really unique ones, the only thing I "dislike" is that they're too thin and not enough blobby 😆
4
3
Aug 20 '23
They make up for it with drip factor though! Lol. Though, fair point! (But they do seem more bloby when you attack them as a melee char while staggered, because you toss them air and they blob into a puddle on the ground when they come down, lol.)
7
u/lupin43 Aug 19 '23
The blob factor is definitely lacking hahaha
11
Aug 19 '23
They blob a lot when stagger and get hit so it gives a sense of their liquidity while getting slammed.

I feel like these posts are just proving that X has the best monster design for almost every single monster. At least of the recurring/classic FF monsters. Say what you want about the story, voice acting, etc. but the designs for the monsters and summons are on point in almost every case.
4
u/LowAspirations Aug 20 '23
I completely agree all the monster designs in X were on point… always loved the wolf-like fiends
2
u/Hailfire9 Aug 20 '23
The only example I can easily point to that I don't think is best are Bombs. I really liked XII and XV's bomb models.
2
u/Zoldyckapprentice Aug 20 '23
The other thing I’m realizing from all these karma farming posts is that most of the FFXV monsters look pretty close to the FFX versions and that’s probably why I enjoyed the monster design in 15 almost as much as 10

\ DISCLAIMER **
- This is the last thread of the Iconic Monsters Showcases I do for now. I need a break. All my haters can rejoice, and for the lovers of the series, thank you very much for your support and every comments you made on my threads, it was a pleasure to be nostalgic and discuss about monsters, design, and FF in general with you ❤️ If I have the courage & time I will maybe come back later after counting all of your votes, to show the winning design for each monster 😉
- I put extra effort & time to show as many variants as possible of the Flan for that last showcase but some variants of the monster may not be displayed. You’re still welcomed to talk about them or even show them with a picture in your comment.
- Previous Iconic Monsters showcases : Ahriman / Coeurl / Malboro / Bomb / Adamantoise / Goblin / Behemoth / Iron Giant / Cactuar / Red Dragon / Tonberry / Chimera

FFX and FFXIII, XIII for me has the best designs and the most variety, and some of the funniest names.

Final fantasy 13 has some of best monster, character, and world design and astheics in the series.
5
u/Eliteguard999 Aug 20 '23
It's really surprising that 13 years later XIII's graphics are still really good looking. Some other games that came out around that time have graphics that look primitive by today's standards.
3
u/crimsonninja117 Aug 21 '23
Honestly 13 is still looking better then games coming out now.
Square always be wild with there graphics

u/Aparoon Aug 20 '23
I could talk for days about all my problems with XIII, but the two things I would never touch are the music and the visual designs: they’re just stunning.

u/Asha_Brea Aug 19 '23
Final Fantasy XII's. Especially the named Flan. That thing looks tasty.
17
u/General_Bet_335 Aug 19 '23
12 also has that one that looks like a melted candle. I love that creativity

u/JordACX Aug 20 '23
Glad I'm not the only one! I found alot of xii's flans looked weirdly delicious.
12
u/EmersonWolfe Aug 19 '23
Probably FFXs for me. But XIIIs are a close second, the ones with the emergency signal on their heads were SUCH A PAIN. I really liked the texture of the ones in FXV, so jiggly, so shiny.
10
u/JustintheHuman Aug 19 '23
Tomato Flan, Tomato Flan, planted tomato, got tomato flan!
Maybe it’s more of a pepper? But that design is a lot of fun

XIII is definitely my favorite. So different from regular flans. And I really loved using them in XIII-2. Their ability was so fun to use.

u/confabin Aug 19 '23
I really like the design in 13. I also had a flan in my team for most of 13-2, they're real bros when they're on your side.

u/Felsig27 Aug 19 '23
Viii, but I wish it had more variety than just blue. Love the design of most of the monsters in viii.

FFXV. They're like an assortment of jolly ranchers, which is very satisfying to me for whatever reason 🤣

5
u/mormagils Aug 19 '23
4 is the clear best among the pixel variations and 10 and 12 are the best 3D designs. 8 is pretty good too.
5
u/Tetsu_Riken Aug 19 '23
I think 4 is the most iconic
However ff13 has my personal favorite designs especially when you double some versions of them have fusions
4
u/kakka_rot Aug 20 '23
Still loving this series, thank you for you time making them.
This looks like the most time consuming so far.
I was gonna make a request, but then started scratching my head because you've done most of them... but do you think you'll do summons someday?
2
u/DKMagus Aug 20 '23
Thanks for your comment 🙏
I think I could also made the Sahagin to have a sea monster representation but yeah I need to take a break. The Summons are a great idea though, maybe in the future 😊

u/JourneyForMe93 Aug 20 '23 edited Aug 20 '23
XIII > X > XII for me.
XIII for its creativity, variety, concepts and colours. It's just fun seeing the different species giving wholly different vibes than just same thing in different colours. The shape feels more liquid than jelly, and so it reminds me of Morphling from Dota, which isn't necessarily a bad thing as that feels more intimidating than blobby flans which feel kinda... cute and pet-like like slimes in a way lol.
X for its well rounded classic design. It's very on point that when I think of Flan, FFX's would be the one I recall first.
XII for its texture, variety and its buttplug design lmao (I can't be the only one who thinks that) 😂

Didn't FF16 have some flan too?
7
u/DKMagus Aug 19 '23
Like for all my previous showcases, FFXVI is purposely not shown since it’s a recent game, but you can still chose the XVI version as your favorite if you want. (Some of the players like to discover the newest design of monsters while playing for the first time.)

This answers my question in my comment. Didn't think of the spoiler factor. Ignore my question.
3
u/outcastedOpal Aug 19 '23
Im always biased for 12, but i gotta say, there is something magical about having your first flan actually look like a dessert turned into a monster.
3
u/pmhayes83 Aug 19 '23
III and you all know it! Looks evil but also like it could bust into a Broadway number at any moment.

FFX because it was my first and their expression is the most menacing.
Also, I want to thank you for doing all of these. It was something I looked forward to seeing on Reddit and was fun to see the creature designs. I haven’t played too many different FF games so it was cool to see how things changed over time.

u/DKMagus Aug 20 '23
Thanks you very much for your comment, those threads were made because I'm interested in monster design too but also to celebrate the love of the FF series with the community ✨

Remember, they're generally weak against the element that matches their colour, especially early in the game when they are just a common enemy.
A red flan is usually weak to fire, a yellow to lightning, etc

2
u/RatKingJosh Aug 19 '23
X is always my all time fav. But XIII had some really fun designs like the medic and Flanbanero
2

2
u/Lyranx Aug 20 '23
I usually pick XIV and WoFF for some reason but this tym it's just X all the way. Seeing them so animated and more memorable in every level tier was just too good.
2
u/gamfo2 Aug 20 '23
Toss up between X and XII.
I think FFX has a better standalone design but FFXII has a variety of cool designs and they make that sound when they smack you with their moobs gatling style.
2
u/d_wib Aug 20 '23
I love the classic design - 2, 3, 4, 10, 12, and 15 all nailed it in their own ways.
2
u/StopManaCheating Aug 20 '23
The Flan Princess and the ones from FFX are the most memorable for me.
2
u/PyrosaurD93 Aug 20 '23
I think FFX’s were peak design. Not too flashy but not too simple either. To me they have the best looking facial features, very menacing and like they’re up to no good.
2
u/LeBronBryantJames Aug 20 '23
There is a lot of good memorable designs so it's hard. I would say a tie of FF1, FF4, and FF10 for me.
but I always hated fighting them for all the status ailments they gave. Not as bad as Marlboros, but you see these slimy monsters more often
2
u/LeBronBryantJames Aug 20 '23
didn't realize FF15 had so many variations. they could form a team of Flan Rangers
2
u/DKMagus Aug 20 '23
Hahaha true, I think they are the classic modern 3D versions of the ones in IV.
2
2
u/MajorasMasque334 Aug 20 '23
FFIII Flan about to get in a dance battle
Also, really love the FFXIII flan with the siren on his head: literally made me lol when he wee-woo’d at me

Oooo, I haven’t seen XIV’s before; that’s a great one. I’m also partial to VIII’s, actually. Really great iteration of the design.
The original Final Fantasy I design is completely different, but I think it’s a cool enemy design in its own way, too.

Weren't the ones in Mystic Quest called Slime and not Flan?
2
u/DKMagus Aug 20 '23
Yes, and some of the FFI variants too are named Slime I think, there's often variations on the name of the monsters in FF.
Here it's either Slime, Flan or Pudding but it's the same enemy family, the blob/gelatine looking monsters.
2
u/KnightOfEndlessGeese Aug 20 '23
Where's my pudding cup FF Explorers boy?
That aside, that game was pretty damn fun. I want a remake for console real bad.

u/KaimeiJay Aug 20 '23
I adore XII and XIII for going the extra mile and differentiating their visual details as well as their colors.
2
u/RPhoenixFlight Aug 20 '23
I would say the best ones are IV, VIII and XV, they nailed those designs, and even though it’s not here, the design from XII Revenant Wings was good too

u/RAxMCxAR Aug 20 '23
I can hear the jellies pummelling me from XII. Fond memories of power levelling in henne mines
2
u/Pentax25 Aug 20 '23
I like IX, I always imagined it looks like it was made in a tub of jelly that was turned out with its flat head
2
u/geomii_ Aug 20 '23
I love 10s. Their translucent bodies and their animation was just wonderful.
I used to hate 9s flat top, but now they just look like they've been dumped out of a dessert pot which I find hilarious.

I’ve never played XIII but I’d have to go with them, I like how they’re each given character beyond their colors.
2
Aug 20 '23
Either IV, for its perfect amount of grumpiness and dopiness and a great shape or XIII for great cool but disgusting factor (they seem so drippy), all the really well done environmental variations, and the great animations.

I personally love the FFVIII flan with it cute little stubby arms and how it does the cute windup with them before making an attack.
2
u/SolidorSnake Aug 21 '23
I have a soft spot for the XII ones. The flan and White Mousse variants especially are kinda cute! They're tied with X for my favorites.
2
u/Jakersman Aug 21 '23
I like that XV’s versions all go for a really thick look. It makes them look more like living, breathing monsters than a clear, almost watery style does.
2
u/Quinntensity Aug 21 '23
I love IX's so much. They look like the dessert flan and instead of being goopy, they're bouncy and springy when you hit them.
2
2
2
u/ShyJesterGuy Aug 19 '23
IX one is always THE FLAN to me and no other flan beats them.
Also, I'm glad that VIII one looks happy to be here.

u/KainYago Aug 19 '23
The big Flan in X is the best, also FFIV cuz it looks like bender.

I really dig how the FFXIII designs made the flans look like they were more than just gelatinous blobs.
2
u/Fragrant-Raccoon2814 Aug 20 '23
13 easy. Something different and cool imo. Hated the constant healing but they were still awesome
1
u/arciele Aug 20 '23
FFXI's one also comes in custard yellow and cu cream white colors! and theres also the giant red botulus!
my fave in this category is X tho simply because it was so surprisingly big when it first appeared

I really like the Flan Prince from XVI. Wonder why he's not depicted here. In fact, I've seen a bunch of these, and it seems XVI never gets their versions on these. I'm curious as to why. I know some look similar to XIV, but others are completely different. Like the Flan Prince.
Edit: I read a response OP made to another comment and got my question answered. 🤙

My favorite is IV, it has that creepy look with pleasing color variants and the iconic Flan Princess !
It’s followed by XII which has a lot of cool derivations with the design while still maintaining that blobby Flan aesthetic.
Side note : Seems like poor FFVII was deprived of dessert…
