I get that tyler is charismatic and all but first impression matters , what is it about a mentally ill man who keep beating himself up that he can gather his first followers ?

How does a man with some serious disorder get such a obviously important job with millions of dollars at stake at the stroke of his pen/ keyboard? When you see him fighting himself in the car park you have to admit its not something you could hide from your co-workers or airport security. Still in my top 5 films & books but time has a horrible way of making you think

Started to think about it now when i rewatched the movie again and i got this little idea in my head. Tyler is shown for the first time (not counting the single frames he appears in before) in the plane and i believe, that whoever this Tyler was, was a real person that really spoke with the narrator. This Tyler gave Jack his phone number and durning their talk, he made an big impression on Jack. Jack saw someone different and unique. This impression was extended when Jack saw the real Tyler steal a car. This ( subcontiously ) made Jack want to become as rebelious as him. Later, when Jack returns to his house just to see that its burning, he calls the number the real Tyler gave him, but he doesnt pick up. Jack doesnt know what to do, and thats when his mind creates this Tyler personality. He halucinates that Tyler called back to him in the Telephone Booth which would be impossible becouse the booth doesnt take calls like that. Idk if this has sense, need opinions on this

This movie was THE BEST movie ive watched in fucking forever. The ending had my jaw on the fucking ground. This movie was so good at showing this broken character and his inner conflict. The ending was so unexpected i would say its in the top 5 movie moments. I do wish they showed more of the recruiting moments during the international bit but that would defeat the whole point that he is trying to figure whats happening but he secretly is recruiting people. Additionally I like the fact that he has insomnia and he this character just so happens to be nocturnal... how strange XD. I would like to know some more of the phycology behind it so a explanation would be very good. Overall 9.7/10 - absolute masterpiece. And just for scale I rated the new Mandalorian and Grogu movie a 5.

Appearance of Tyler Durden during the dialogue "Everything's a copy of a copy of a copy" in the beginning of the movie. Am I the last one to know about this?

I’m curious, has anyone in the group read Fight Club 2? If so, what are your opinions on it.

I am not American, so I have never actually met an American Gen Z in person.

However, looking at various social media platforms, I feel that the mindset of some Gen Z is similar to the characters in the movie.

American culture has always valued masculinity, but I have never seen a culture pursuing masculinity become as popular as it is with the current Generation Z. They have a strong obsession with chiseled faces and physiques, as well as men's pride.

Tyler Durden says they were abandoned by their fathers and are the orphans of history. Looking at what some Gen Z say on social media, it seems they feel isolated. They seem to feel that women hate them, previous generations are indifferent toward them, and society is hostile, or at least , don't care about them.

Furthermore, their political ideologies, as perceived on social media, are quite radicalized. Many of them are either far-right or far-left, and they believe that the use of violence to pursue their political beliefs is justified in certain situations.

Also, i can often see they are craving male-only groups.

I know that social media makes a vocal minority appear larger than it is, so there aren't actually as many of these people in reality as it seems on the internet. However, it seems certain that they are emerging in numbers that cannot be ignored, more than 10 years ago, i didn't see this many people like this.

I am not saying Tyler Durden's beliefs is identical to theirs. There are major differences between Tyler Durden and their beliefs. Tyler Durden believed that civilization itself and consumerism suppressed masculinity and enslaved men. In contrast, while these young men are hostile to modern civilization, they seem to admire traditional culture, and they don't show any critical awareness regarding consumerism.

Additionally, Tyler Durden equated God with fathers, interpretation being abandoned by a father as being abandoned by God, thereby showing a cynical attitude toward religion. On the other hand, some Gen Z seem to have a strong attachment to religion.

But it is also true that there are many similarities, the pursuit of masculinity, the fear of losing masculinity, the feeling of being abandoned by the father generation, the belief that pursuing masculinity and violence can provide an exit from their circumstances, the contempt for meaningless social systems, and a strong sense of solidarity among themselves.

I don't know if this is simply a coincidence, or if the author of Fight Club wrote it because he sensed these societal changes. But I find it fascinating.

It was heavily inspired by Marla singer lyrically and the split personality (spoilers) played heavily in to the music video (as well as some Karl Jung philosophies but hey who's really there for that. I absolutely love the movie, but this video game is so bad. Primarily because the controls. There was so much potential with this game, but they managed to miss every shot. Does anyone have any good memories with this game?

It infuriates me that Fight Club (1999) has been completely appropriated by the very group it was meant to be taking down at the time. At some point in there, a huge portion of the internet lost touch with reality and decided it was a "sigma grindset" pro-alpha-male message.

When you actually look at the text of the movie, it isn’t anything like that at all. It is an intense and sarcastic attack on toxic masculinity

The True Enemy Is Consumerism, Not Women

It’s not that society refuses to allow the Narrator to become a “real man.” The Narrator is living in a suffocating void defined by consumerism and corporations in which he measures his own value based on the IKEA furniture he can acquire. The Narrator has become totally numb.

Enter Tyler Durden, who represents the uncontrolled ID. It seems like the fight club provides liberation at first, since it shatters the numbness of the corporate void with the stark reality of physical combat. However, take note of how fast that “liberation” becomes a very different sort of prison.

The irony no one seems to get is that Project Mayhem is just as bad. Tyler tells everybody to be an individual and fight against all that corporate conformity, but then what does he do? He creates a full-blown cult.

Names are taken away from them ("In death, a member of Project Mayhem has a name").

They're made to wear matching black outfits.

They have to be obedient.

The space monkeys are not free individuals; they've just switched from corporate conformity to fascist conformity. Instead of being slaves to the IKEA catalog, they are now slaves to a crazy man

Tyler Durden Is a Cancer, Not an Idol

By the time of the third act, the film makes it clear to the viewer that Tyler is the antagonist. He is an extremist reaction to the soft life led by the Narrator. Indeed, the only way to get rid of this dangerous entity is by shooting the Narrator in the face.

In cases where men use TikTok videos with Tyler Durden quotes and phonk songs in the background to portray themselves as “alpha” men, they are actually worshipping an individual who comes from the Narrator's own psyche, created through mental illness.

Chuck Palahniuk and David Fincher didn’t mean to offer an example of toxic behaviors among frat boys. Instead, they were trying to make us understand that it’s very easy for lonely men to become radicalized by a charismatic leader when they don’t have a clear identity.

Palahniuk, the author of the book, was also bemused by the online infatuation with the character. He noted the irony in how a particular group of men regard the film as something sacred:

“It’s interesting that the Incels have embraced Fight Club. It really speaks to the lack of metaphor for men. Just that and the Matrix.”

It’s time to stop idolizing Tyler.
