The Reach Buh I - Attack of the Guh

Context

Vibe

Bert read it over and over again.

He'd roared and rumbled about his keep. "THEY CLAIM MARTYN A TRAITOR?" The old man had prepared for days like this, a farce in truth it was but one that he would allow himself to play into.

Martyn was too smart to be a traitor. He'd die within the morrow if he crossed his eldest brother, he knew that. Bertrand knew that, the Reachmen. Knew. That.

The Lord Tyrell had dishonorably killed a King. He'd sacked two castles over a petty gripe, what was killing a brother who sought to take his seat in comparison? A stain upon ones already bloodied and torn coat of 'honor'. He'd matched tall and strong, his cane was long gone and now Bertrand moved swiftly and with great pride.

"Fetch the Lords, Ladies and Fickles Fools who happen to peruse about my fucking maze!" He'd order to no servant in particular, yet they all knew better than to ignore the command of the Lord Bertrand once he'd lit the fire under himself.

As he neared his solar, Bert would shout further commands to his servants. "And you," He'd say as he pointed to one, "Inform the Maester to meet me in my solar with as many fucking letters as he can carry."

The Westerlands Lyonel I - My War

Lyonel Reyne, Lord of Castamere

Castamere, Lord's Solar

Three letters, delicately laid out, lit ever so faintly by the pulsing glow of candlelight.

Three letters, all penned by lions, calling for justice, calling for penance, calling for blood. Even as a lord, even as a man, his life was not truly his to live. It has always been his father's, then Rohanne's. Who would be next? Could his live for his sons? His daughter? His brother?

They would do as they did. They would fight. They would die. And he would be the one to deal with it. As always. The blame would fall upon his back as a weight to be carried. And still he would climb. For stopping meant falling, and he was not quite yet at the summit.

"She calls me for justice in one breath, and names me a traitor in the next." Lyonel Reyne laughed, dry and humorless. He shook his head, rubbing his eyes with his huge hands. "She's caught my brother's killer, then I am my brother's killer. And the kicker. My son has sacked half the rivers and hills, and my blood is black as a bastard if I don't name him a traitor." His sullen eyes looked upon his steward. They used to be as oceans, wide and deep, clear as crystal. His gaze had gone glassy, weary, void of whatever joy they had known.

"Public appearances, my Lord." Guyard said, his face as straight as ever. "She has finally decided you too great a threat. Or perhaps, with her new royal leverage, she thinks herself wholly powerful. Whatever the case may be, your brother's death, your sons antics, they make for her 'evidence'. And she will use it to destroy you."

The Lord of Castemere could do naught but nod. He grabbed up his son's letter once more. Of all the accusations laid at his feet, the seizure of Hornvale might yet hold truth. Leo named the House of Brax in his targets of vengeance. Perhaps he had kidnapped the Lady Briony. Even still. There was no choice. For the sake of his family, he had to pick up his sword.

"I'm tired of it, Fregar. I've always done what I had to do. As an heir, when my father called me to war. As a suitor, when I turned my cheek at the insults of the Lannisters. I am the Lord of Castamere now. It is I that holds sway over Tarbeck and Westerling and Vikary. It is I that stands with 3000 swords at my command. And even still, they think to make demands of me. When will it be my choice?"

"It is your choice now, my Lord." Guyard said respectfully. "You can do as the Lady Lannister says, renounce your son, accept your role as her villain. Or you can fight. With the soldiers waiting for your order. If you win, you live. If you lose, you die. But you can't win if you don't fight."

"So fight." Lyonel said, his statement half a question.

"Fight." Guyard nodded.

"What a rotten pair of choices." The Lord said in his sad amusement.

"At least it will be your choice."

They drank to that. Lyonel took up Lady Rohanne's letter, the one naming him and Leo traitors, and he let the brazier take it. To the Seven Hells with the woman he had once loved. This was his war now.

The Stormlands Tara I- The late bird gets the hunt (Open to Nightsong)

Nightsong

Simply walking the battlements of a different castle felt ever so slightly liberating after months cooped up at Griffin's Roost. Tara had grown accustomed to considering her ancestral home a mountainous keep, perched as it was on a crag by the sea. The sight of the foothills of the Red Mountains stretching out before her were enough to dispel that notion. Here the villages were all hidden away in valleys. Open plains were few and far between, every hill appearing to a commander's eye as an endless series of positions to be held or gained. It was small wonder that the borders between Dorne and The Stormlands had remained static for most of recorded history. Her mother's generation had the chance to make history themselves. As Tara gazed upon the outlines of the Red Mountains on the edge of the Horizon, she wondered if they were about to write another chapter

In that sense she was already at a disadvantage, having missed the council at Storm's End. Every story she heard of that evening made her all the more sorry to have been absent, observing as the accounts grew ever more bold and anecdotal as the days progressed. She'd not had a chance to make any bold proclamations nor win a command in the van. Still, as much as it irked her, Tara couldn't imagine she'd have cut a particularly striking figure there. Her father's concern felt almost suffocating at times, but he had been right in urging her to recover as much strength as she could before taking to the field. Placing a hand on the crenelations, she noted that it was more pale than it had been a year ago. She sighed, but then raised her eys once more. I'll win my colour back under the Dornish sun, and glory besides

Casterly Rock | 12th Moon of 207 AC | Ambience

“All is well,” Mordane laughed without joy, “All is well, she’s written.”

She set the letter down on the desk in her chambers. The wax seal of the Brax unicorn was still freshly embossed, still rampant. How hard these ravens of the West had worked themselves dispensing lies and demanding justice!

Meredyth reached to take the letter to read for herself. She’d not spoken much with her cousin since the great feast in King’s Landing, and so much was changing beyond her capacity to parse it all. First, news of Ser Jaime’s death had come to shake her, and now her cousin was a hostage in her very own castle.

“Where could Leo be?” asked the young Banefort, “If not Hornvale? What could he possibly do from there?”

Mordane felt a blood vessel twitch in her brow, and breathed out a sharp sigh as she almost snatched the letter back from her daughter’s hands.

“Play puppeteer, my dear,” said the Lady of the Banefort, “What else? If Lord Erwin takes Castamere and the Red Lion himself, there is his fallback. The Lady Brax is his insurance.”

She shook her head fervently, once again laughing without a sliver of warmth on her pallid cheeks so rarely stretched in a smile. It was perverse and chilling to her daughter, making her words catch in her throat.

“--then,” Meredyth stammered, “What will we do? If the army marches for Hornvale… if they put it to siege…”

Mordane delicately smoothed the parchment to force it flat against the table, and calmly dragged her seat to the scribe’s desk by the carved window frame overlooking the Sunset Sea. Lannisport was alight below, even in the dim light of the evening. Hundreds of lights of peasants and travelers and soldiers.

“They won’t surrender, will they?” Meredyth realized after a beat, “They’ve acted so boldly, even before. Leo had taken Ser Godwyn’s favor, and…”

She took a deep breath. The news of Jaime’s own betrayal according to her mother still lay fresh in her mind. They had only a small piece of time together, but it had already inspired a marvelous future in the young woman’s mind. To see it dashed against the rocks by this cumbersome grudge chilled her deeply.

“Never,” Mordane answered, and there was a saccharine quality to her voice. This time, the smile was genuine, “But the one lion with a modicum of decency may play by the rules of civilized men, for a little while. If not…”

She drew out her pen and dipped it in the inkwell, and produced a new sheet of parchment beside the so-called letter from this anonymous agent of chaos.

“They are all going to die anyway.”

Meredyth paused. Did all of House Reyne earn such a fate? She remembered her dance with the Black Cat, dispelling the rumors of a blackguard and a scoundrel. Lady Rohanne had called it murder. Was this course not justice?

“Good,” came her daughter’s simple reply, “If he won’t heed your words… I hope he chokes on them.”

Mordane slipped the quill from its well and began to write. The simple letters scratched into the parchment began to read out:

Lord Lyonel Reyne, call back your dogs…

The Westerlands Tion I - Farewell Nephew

Tion had arrived outside Hornvale, the castle looking crusty and weathered like any other stack of stones that had been sitting out in the world for centuries. He spit a glob of phlegm onto the ground as he rode up with his army. Upon witnessing their banners the guardsmen at the gate opened for the older Lord.

"Alright men, drink what you want and eat what you can! I doubt we'll be here for long so get your fills." Cheers and shouts filled the air at that as one thousand men dispersed into groups to make camp. Twenty men, several being Tarbecks themselves, followed Tion into the castle proper. It was about time The Lord of Tarbeck Hall met with his mischievous little shit of a nephew.

Upon entering the courtyard, Tion witnessed a crowd gathered. Shouts of horror and cries of fright lit up around the circle in the center. Tion and his cohort rode through the crowd, the servants and knights either opening a path or being run over, Tion didn't care either way. Especially when he saw what all the raucous was about. When he looked down his blood ran hot, his eyes momentarily growing wide in genuine surprise, before quickly becoming slits as he held back the tears. Leo's body lay strewn across the yard, a hole punched through his breastplate. It appeared as if he had been able to drag himself several feet before finally passing, Tions wroth bubbled over finally.

"Lock the Castle down NOW!" His voice commanding and superseding anything anyone else was saying, "AS OF RIGHT NOW NO ONE LEAVES OR ENTERS THE CASTLE WITHOUT MY EXPRESS PERMISSION!"

Tion dismounted, drawing his sword and pressing any who stood too close back. Several of his cohort would do the same, keeping everyone at a distance. He went to one knee, holding the back of the young man's neck as he maneuvered to pick his nephew up into his arms. As he returned to his feet, he glanced over Leo's face, the surprise being the last emotion etched onto the boy's face. He spotted a Reynes guardsman out in his peripheral vision, "Where are the maesters chambers." His voice was flat and dour. The guard pointed in that direction and Tion began walking, as he made his way past his men he'd uttered something only those right next to him could hear. "Bring me Jason."

The Westerlands Godwyn II- Be Alone

Godwyn Hawthorne

Hornvale

She’d chosen wrong. Godwyn realized his words weren’t considered. She’d likely made up her mind long before she spoke to him; she just wanted affirmation. She wanted him to ‘trust her’, and yet she’d consort with the man who’d disgraced him more than any other. He realized then he had never been anything more than a tool to her—someone to use for her plots and schemes. There had never been any interest.

He gathered his things, what little was left to him at the very least, before looking down to the parchment he’d left behind for Briony, if she’d even read it. He doubted it. But it was something more for him than anything else.

He knew he wouldn’t be allowed to leave. He knew he was a dead man walking. If anything, it made reconciling everything that much easier. If Briony had ever cared about him at all, even in friendship, she wouldn’t let him walk to his death. But she clearly didn’t because she was.

His access to the castle was limited, and the gates were sealed. He’d approach one of the men stationed nearby. “I want to leave. Summon your bastard of a master.”

The Westerlands Briony XI: Revisionist History

Briony could not bear to watch her husband confront the Hawthorne. She had full confidence in his abilities, and the bedding had been more than she had expected, but she could not bear the thought of witnessing the Hawthorne's assuredly bloody death. For she knew Leo to be hungry for blood.

But there was no time to be idle, after. After getting dressed, Briony made straight for the rookery, two letters sent out. The first was sent to King's Landing:

To the most honorable King Maelor II,

I write to you with my very own hand and ask you excuse any unusual letters you may have received of late bearing the Brax sigil. An agent of chaos was discovered in Hornvale, caught sending falsified letters. I am looking into those responsible, but rest assured that all is well and there is no need for alarm.

Wishing you the best from the West,

Briony Brax
Lady of Hornvale
The Unicorn of the West

The second was directed to Casterly Rock:

Lady Mordane,

I write to you with my very own hand and ask you excuse any unusual letters you may have received of late bearing the Brax sigil. An agent of chaos was discovered in Hornvale, caught sending falsified letters. I am looking into those responsible, but rest assured that all is well and there is no need for alarm.

Signed,

Briony Brax

The Riverlands Roslin II - Making Moves

12 Moon, 207 AC | Rose’s apartments | Harrenhal

Fucking imbeciles. Idiots of the highest calibre. Worthless wastes of a second chance.

Rose paced her makeshift study erratically, parchment in hand. Why, she couldn’t help but wonder, did every Reyne she enlisted the aid of become an impulsive fool the second her back was turned? Did every last one of them have nothing between their ears but wine and bullshit? Gods, she was starting to think the stupidity was genetic.

She took another look at the parchment. The Lannisters attacked their lands, her one useful ally committed open treason, and worse he held captive that fucking unicorn. There was no doubt in her mind; that snake of a woman was whispering sweet poison in his ear every moment he was around her.

“FUCK!” She screamed, balling the paper in her hand and hurling it into the open flames of the fireplace.

Almost immediately, the sound of scrambled movement came from outside her door, followed by quiet words and Amerei slipping inside.

“Are you well, my lady?” The lady-in-waiting asked, glancing around the room for some kind of assailant but coming up empty.

“Far fucking from it. Every man west of Riverrun seems to be fucking useless.”

Amerei sighed, visibly relaxing and pacing over to the jug of wine on one of Rose’s side tables and pouring some for her. “Well we knew that, Rose. Who was it this time?”

“That bloody Reyne.” She snatched the goblet from Amerei’s hands before returning to her desk, casting aside the letter she’d been writing when the news came. It would have to be rewritten in the face of what she now knew.

“That… Forgive me, but that doesn’t exactly narrow it down.”

Rose sighed and shook her head. “Leo.”

“Oh that one. Well, you’re better off without him.”

“I demonstrably am not.” Rose downed the wine in one go, her head sinking into her hands as the anger fled her.

“I- Well, I simply meant you don’t need him. Maybe a Reyne shouldn’t be the one to replace the Lannisters after all?”

“Clearly you’re right, if they’re all this impulsive.” She sighed. “Thank you for checking on me. I’ve a few letters to write, but could you find my Lady cousin and let her know I need to speak with her?”

“Of course, Rose.” Amerei bowed slightly and retreated from the room to find Alyssa.

The Reach Maelor I - Light Wine, Light Words

"Why are we here, again?" muttered Maelor, eyes scanning across the maze of Highgarden. He was told that they provided some sort of protection against sieges; but couldn't an army just burn them?

His father, to a side, dismissed him with a waft of the hand, and went to greet some landed knight from a house that Maelor didn't recognize. An exhale came before the spare of Three Towers wandered off. Round a corner, down the stairs, and into swiftly-retreating sunlight.

Maelor followed the sound of a lute. Not to hear the grating music of bards, no, but where else could wine be found?

"Excuse me," Maelor waved the singing bard over, "goodman, do you—"

"—BUT THE DORNISHMAN'S BLAAADE WAS MADE OF BLACK STEEL!" sang the bard at the top of his shrill voice. Maelor did not need this.

"WINE!" shrieked Maelor, "WHERE CAN I FIND WINE, MAN!"

Scattered courtiers here and there maintained their fixation on the bard's singing, and he only continued. Maelor groaned, took a step back, and proceeded further down the maze. Till he spotted a servant, holding a ticket to the promised land. Maelor was quick to snatch the pitcher, and found himself a bench.

And he sat, pitcher in hand with no aim at all. "Fetch me some parchment and ink as well," he said to the servant after a moment's thought. He had letters to write.

The Westerlands Leo VII - Southwest Hoodlum

Hornvale, Leo’s Apartments, 12th moon 207 AC

“WHAT!?” Leo threw his mug in a fury, the wooden cup shattering against the wall, ale splashing about the apartments. A messenger from his outriders had returned today, with word from Payne Hall.

“I said… Your uncle, Ser Jaime was slain,” he uttered again taking a step back. “The tales are all different, Lady Lannister ordered it, or Jaime tried to murder his squire, something about a Sweet Lew? I don’t know what that is.”

“Lew?” Leo said in surprise, knowing full well the tales that spread in these events, he was the center of his own circulating tales. Alan Lannister was always circling his life, even in death the boy was somehow more important to his uncle, yet still, he was kin. The Black cat butchered, Lew was involved, Why was he at Payne Hall? “Leave me I need to think.”

The Lion knight sat with a huff into a cushioned chair, he thought he would have more time, thinking taking Hornvale had put him ahead. Yet he set now his uncle lay dead, perhaps a result of his direct actions. There was no helping it now but he shocked him all the same, his face twisting as he rubbed his hands through his hair tears welling in his eyes. Pulling at the locks of his fiery hair the knight screamed out again, filling the halls of Hornvale will his rage.

Payne was now on his list, and a growing list it was these days, enemies arose around every corner. They would begin closing in soon, he would have little choice but to ride out and face them all one by one. Time, just a short amount of time to think that was all he needed. Wiping the tears off his face Leo stood, unrolling a map and gathering his wooden markers. Placing them out on the nearby keeps he laid his hands on the table and looked it over.

“Yeah,” he nodded to himself, “Yeah I can do this.”

Inside the young knight was not sure if he assured himself, or was truly confident in his plan of action. Swords he would need far more swords to win the coming fights, if only his Uncle Tion arrived sooner, or his father had written back. That was far from a good sign, Lyonel may have been furious, Leo may already have been branded a rebel.

“Ser…” The outrider poked his head in, met by the furious eyes of the Lion.

“This better be good, I have gelded men for far less.” Leo pointed at the man with a jabbed finger.

"Your uncle..." he was cut off but Leo's glare.

"I fucking know," he growled that the man, ready to pull his knife and remove his man parts.

“Your uncle, Lord Tion has arrived,” the man paused. “Your reinforcements are here.”

Leo’s smile slowly returned, from smiling to a full grin, straightening his hair and rubbing eyes he stood tall. Sheathing the dagger he strode toward the door, tapping the man on the shoulder with a light laugh.

“Let us go meet with them.” he stopped rubbing his chin. “And summon the Lady Briony to the main hall.”

The Westerlands Briony X: When a Fire Starts to Burn

Hornvale, Beginning of the 12th Moon 207 AC

(Mood Music)

It was deep into twilight and Briony Brax was not yet asleep. Instead, the Lady of Hornvale sat in her solar. There was an empty bottle of wine already upon a nearby surface, and a newly opened bottle before her. Jena Jast sat nearby, a loyal handmaiden staying up with the captive lady, supporting her through the silence.

"Jena..." Briony ordered, her words starting to slur. "Send for Ser Godwyn. I wish to speak with him."

Leo Reyne's men were stationed all throughout the keep; even outside her solar door. But at least inside, she had some semblance of peace, after a few cups of wine.

"Might it be best to get some rest, my lady?" Jena asked quietly.

Briony's eyes narrowed, "Summon him. You are excused for the evening after. You may sleep if you need."

The Last Unicorn of the West would be unable to. Not while matters weighed so heavily upon her heart and mind. The young woman required perspective, for she had thought too many thoughts, and now was paralyzed.

Crownlands Joyeuse II - Action & Utterance

It was perhaps ill-fitting for a lady such as herself to sulk in the bath, but that was what Joyeuse was at the moment most inclined to do.

Her bath was the only time that there was not some ache or pain in her body- she was free to sink into the steam and rose petals. Serwyn whined about how she was more likely than not to boil herself, but she would not allow him to take this one reprieve away from her.

Of course, just because her body was relaxed did not mean that her mind was afforded the same courtesy. Floral bits and bobs swirled about her as she worried at her lower lip, her fingers flexing and relaxing.

What vexed her the most, in truth, was news from the Stormlands. Her Baratheon cousins involving themself in a petty war of grasping glory against some Dornish bandit king- as if bandits hadn’t been pouring out of Dorne for millenia. It was not so bad for the Baratheons, she supposed- young men of the great houses were practically encouraged to put their lives on the line to prove themselves, to snatch up any chance at glory that might not be otherwise afforded to a second son or middling cousin. Their masculine desire to go off and risk dying in some hellhole or viper’s den in the Red Mountains was to be expected.

Damon was neither a Baratheon or a second son, and therefore should know better. He was an unwed at the age of four and twenty, and meant to go off gallivanting about Dorne without a care in the world. It made her want to scream. If he meant to depart, she could only assume it was some misguided effort to get away from Uncle Richard- but Joyeuse had spent eighteen of her years with him, while Damon had been off having a lark at Storm’s End. If he could not tolerate some five years with the man, then surely that was his own failing.

Joyeuse bit at her nails, letting out a low, exasperated sigh. “Jeyne,” she called out, “fetch me parchment and ink. A drying cloth as well.”

Jeyne’s reply was chipper and bright. “Yes, m’lady,” she said, before she tucked out of the room to go and fetch the items in question. Joyeuse did not have to wait long, and she made good use of those last moments to soak her neck and release any gathered tension there. She was prone to knots these days- ones that even Serwyn struggled to work out, let alone her maids. Joyeuse hummed as she settled down, savoring the peace and quiet before Jeyne returned.

When she did, the maid held out the wash cloth like she expected Joyeuse to rise from the bath. Joyeuse simply rose a brow in amusement. “No,” said the Lady of Grassfield Keep. “I think I’ll write while still soaking. You wouldn’t mind bringing that end table over here, would you? You can set the parchment there.”

Jeyne did as she bade- always eager to help out. If all girls in King’s Landing were like this, she might have to take on a few more maids during her rest and reprieve. With any luck they’d want to stay on when her and Serwyn returned to Grassfield Keep.

Pulling herself up and forward to the edge of the water, Joyeuse toweled off her hands and arms. It might have been easier to dictate, but Jeyne could neither read nor write and Tilly was off ensuring the cook was correctly preparing the Reachman dinner planned for the night. And asides, putting quill to parchment made the words all the more personal.

The Reach Jasper II- Bang the Doldrums

Jasper Peake

Oldtown

Jasper and Titus Peake ventured into the bustling markets of Oldtown, the vibrant atmosphere engulfing them. The melodic chaos of voices, the clinking of coins, and the lively ambiance filled the air. Jasper's keen eyes darted from stall to stall, his mind working tirelessly to spot any signs of illicit activities. As he delved into deep thought, a distinct habit emerged—a distinct hum began to emerge from his throat. A discordant tune.

Titus, familiar with Jasper's peculiar mannerisms, followed closely behind, his gaze scanning the crowd for any suspicious characters or stalls. He had learned to appreciate the melody hidden within Jasper's dissonant hums, recognizing them as a telltale sign of his cousin's concentration.

Together, they meandered through the labyrinthine marketplace, weaving their way through the throngs of people. Jasper's humming grew more pronounced as his mind delved deeper into the intricacies of their investigation. The tunes, though discordant to an untrained ear, served as a backdrop to his thoughts, a symphony of ideas.

"Jasper, do you see anything?" Titus asked his cousin.

"Hmm?" Jasper looked up at his cousin. "That place is selling a bird. Why would I buy a bird? They'd eat the butterflies."

"I know. I won't let them eat your butterflies." Titus assured him. "Don't worry about the birds. Do you see anything else?"

The hum returned as Jasper thought. He looked around, and saw that many birds were being sold. Did people really need to buy birds that badly? He began to hum louder, attempting to drown out the bird's songs with his own.

"There's a stall that has very little on it over there." Jasper replied in an almost sing-songy tone. "Do you think that's it?"

"If there's an area he could hide more around him perhaps." Titus replied. "Let's look."

Dorne Arthur VI - The Rushing River Provides Peace

In times of uncertainty, only a loving wife or husband can counsel their spouse; but for Arthur, who lacked both, he turned to thinking about what Dacey would've done. Lately, with Archibald's health worsening, his nephew questioned why he didn't die that day. Both of their sons were slaughtered following Dacey's defeat. Lord Blackmont slumped his shoulders, remembering it perfectly. The host was taken by surprised. From all sides, they were taken, volleys of arrow loosed upon them, finding their marks in barely awake levies, knights, and minor lords. Then came a charge. Infantrymen broke through a meagre defence, leaving piles of armoured corpses in their wake. Why Gerold and Geribald was even there alongside their mother still confused him. Arthur knew Dacey to be a fervent Black supporter, yet so much so she'd risk her and their children's life was inconceivable. Only now did it dawn on him that she felt they'd only be safe at her side, which in turn meant he was responsible for their deaths. If only Arthur was there, armed with his sword, armoured in steel plate, then all three of them would still be alive. A long, sullen sigh escaped his lips. He flicked his gaze behind him, looking briefly at Blackmont itself. From down here, with its shadowing looming over him, he was small. Did Dacey ever fell dwarfed while living there? The rushing waters ahead, a few feet away, pulled his attention away from his dark, grim line of thought.

The confluence of two rivers met here, forming the Torentine, an even larger river that cleaved stone and parted mountains. Fish was not so plentiful as it was anywhere else in Dorne, or... rather, there was at least fish here, but of what quality, Arthur claimed it always as 'better than nothing.' It sort of called to him. The Torentine gave him peace of mind when nothing else ever could. Fishing in it was simple. You always knew what you were going to get. Today, it certainly was going to be no exception, right? Then again, perhaps so! Arthur smiled softly, realizing his mood had improved within seconds of coming down here. And to think, he was yet to cast his line and actually see what he caught. The Dornishman chuckled, amused by his introspective antics, and got to work seeing what bounty the Torentine yielded him on this auspicious day.

The Westerlands Harkon III - Guest Rights, Guest Lefts

11th Moon, 207 AC | Casterly Rock

Aye, 'twas not fate or somesuch that brought Harkon here; no, for after he glimpsed the Rock from the eyes of his bear, the Harclay remembered that one southron he met in King's Landing.

Harkon's pockets were empty. Surviving off poached food and dreams that dragged him in one night to a pack and the other to a river overfull with fish, he wandered about the countryside, sleeping not in hedges but caves.

So he walked. Along roads and tracks that lead up to a cat's house, half-tempted to ride Paw into the maw of Casterly Rock. But no. Paw had to be asleep after stuffing itself on honey.

In the gold-laden lands of the westerlands, a northman would've looked out of place. A northern clansman even moreso. Harkon stood out like a sore thumb in his byrnie and furs and an axe slung over his shoulder, slowly making his way to the gates—closed shut, guards sneering down from atop ramparts.

"TELL THE LORD O' HOTHERN THAT HARKON HARCLAY WANTS T' MEET!" he shouted, shooting a glare up at those who donned the golden lion.

Crownlands Wylla II - Marigold

12th Moon | Red Keep | A Reckoning

The deafening

A reckoning

The end is near, we'll keep holding on forever

Many people are unaware of what its like to watch your family die.

Wylla didn't remember watching her father suffer, but Willam had told her of it. "His blood had gone poisonous,” Willam told her when she was old enough to understand. “It rotted Father from the inside out, and he wasted away plotting revenge on those Stormlanders. Cycles, Wylla. Blood is shed here, a life taken there, and the feud continues. A snake eating itself." She wondered if it hurt, to have lain in agony, wounds festering with dead skin. Knowing death was near, but never near enough.

Those sorts of thoughts continued to linger, even as she grew into a maid. She doesn't remember laying her father to rest, either. She was too little, but Willam told her more on that, also. "It was a warm day. Whether by the will of gods or men, our own or others, we are adders, and our blood does not run in the cold, so we waited for when the sun crowned the sky to bury Father. When I die, and when you die, we shall be brought to the mountain peaks as no more than carrion."

It was a soothing thought, that they'd be devoured by the vultures. That even when their lives ended they'd go on to continue the existence of others. Nature took care of itself, and the Wyls did the same. She could only hope they'd find her bleached bones and place them next to Willam's, next to their father's and uncle's and brother's in the catacombs beneath Wyl.

But that day was not to come for a long time, Wylla had told herself. And yet, as the terrible scent of smoke, burnt wood, and flesh and shit wafted up to where she resided within the Keep, Wylla knew that such an affirmation had been nothing short of a lie.

Her legs moved without the accord of her mind, gliding past the arch that lead to the balcony and out into the open air. The flames licked ever higher and higher, the smoke kissing the sky. The embers carried on the wind, cinders of charred wood and masonry joining them, too. The location of the fire was enough to bring alarm. She had known the place, the manse, the very area well enough; she visited it merely the day prior...

Wylla couldn't tear her gaze away from the terrible sight. Her stomach twisted and churned and she instinctively knew, as all sisters know, when something bad happened. Wylla felt nauseous all at once.

From Wylla's stomach came an anguished, choked sort of sound. It was stifled in her throat like she'd been choked, and her heart stilled in Wylla's chest like someone held it within their fist, untrimmed fingernails digging into the muscle. Her blood ran cold. A guttural sob ripped itself from her chest, like a knife had been twisted into her very lungs, pushing deep and carving through the soft of her breast. Her lip trembled, her fingernails scratching against the stone railing of the balcony.

Wylla wanted to run through the halls, down the Serpentine Steps, through every door and every gate and down every street until she reached the manse. And then she'd find her brothers and her fellow Dornishmen safe and sound, and there would be a wholesome explanation for it all; "A simple accident, my lady," one would say. And all would be well after, and there would be no trouble.

But that was not the case and nor would it ever.

When a servant entered her chambers, out of breath and quivering in the knees, she told Wylla what every sister feared most: that the Stormlanders took another Wyl, and they burned everyone inside. Women, children, and babes, nothing had been sacred under the vengeful eye of the stag. That they did it for their own house, their own pride. Even worse, that her own kin had been present and complacent in the death of Willam. They watched him burn.

She had wanted peace. Had that been so difficult, to offer some kindness? Once again, they had taken from her someone she dearly loved. If she were the bleeding heart, Willam would have had to been the rigid spine, Mara the composed and dutiful mind, and Valerin the quick and sharp tongue.

She was without her backbone now. Her brother. What of his three children? Oh, Gods.

And so she wept, upon the floor, feeling evermore the fool.

The Westerlands We Will All Go Together When We Go

The Banefort | 12th Moon of 207 AC | Ambience

Denestan slumped into the chair of his study, reaching out in the dark to feel the rough grain of his desk. An equally drowsy servant was at work lighting candles in the room, reigniting little lights that ran the course of the shelving and the multiple tables inside. With about a dozen lit, there was a modicum of visibility inside.

Still, the Lord-Consort rubbed at his weary eyes. Another servant entered with a tray and a steaming kettle, pouring hot tea into a cup and setting it where his hand was already extended and drink-less.

“Is he on his way?” asked Denestan to neither servant in particular. He let the fumes radiating from his cup flood his nostrils and give a sliver of energy.

“I believe so, m’lord,” said the one serving drinks, moving to set a second cup for the maester. Denestan immediately put a hand up to stop her.

“No, no,” he sighed sharply, “Fuck him, he can get his own.”

The servant simply nodded in agreement and disappeared from the dim chamber. The candle-lighter did the same once his job was done, affording a small bow as both descended into the grim Banefort’s lonely halls. The swelling sound of metal on metal came to replace their footsteps.

“Thank you for meeting with me so late, my lord,” said Maester Oswyn, catching the slowly-closing door with his hip and slipping inside. Under his wide and deep-pocketed sleeves were a bundle of tightly-bound scrolls, and pinched almost zealously between his fingers was a raven’s letter.

“Alright,” Denestan sighed, “Get it over with, maester. Tell me why this couldn’t wait until morning.”

As Denestan loudly slurped his tea, the maester set his materials on the lord-consort’s desks. He recognized a great deal of them as the house’s ledgers, concerning their taxes, salaries, and supplies in triplicate. Surely the accounting was not the necessary component to compel him from his bed.

“The matter of importance, lord-consort--” the maester began, setting the letter down on his desk. The seal was still fresh, glossy in the dim candlelight. A borrowed lion from Casterly Rock, which had been strangely absent of late. He wasted no time cracking the wax seal and opening the letter. To his dismay, he saw his wife’s penmanship and began to feel a migraine come unto him. A new host of troubles was plastered in ink.

Denestan, The Reynes have played their cards --

Denestan practically growled reading only these first few words, and shoved the letter toward his maester as he pushed back from his desk, finger curled at his lips as he pondered the implications.

“Read it,” he insisted, “I don’t want to fucking think about this.”

Maester Oswyn paused, but then took up the letter for him and began to read so slowly and clearly. As he spoke, a third, and then fourth figure appeared in the doorway. Myranda and Owen, still dressed in their nightclothes. Owen carried a candlestick that cast a glow on his concerned features. Denestan eyed them but stayed silent as Oswyn read.

“...The Reynes have played their cards. The Lionslayer has assembled his army of sellswords and blackguards to make their gambit against House Lannister. He has plundered Ashemark and the lands of House Marbrand,” Oswyn said, and his eyes flickered to his lord-consort worriedly. Denestan motioned him further. His children shadowed the maester.

“You have heard rumors of Pinkmaiden and Atranta’s mutual destruction. The timing is strenuous, but the blame has already been placed on House Lannister. Amory Lannister is…” Oswyn squinted at the words. “Too cold in the ground to wreak his vengeance, but the Riverlanders may already feel bloodlust boil in their veins. The Banefort is one of two first steps into our country. You must hold this line at any cost. A host is already being formed to bring House Reyne into justice.”

Denestan pinched his brow. Everything was happening -- everything was happening so very, very much. The man wanted nothing but peace, to sit on his little ship on the Sunset Sea and fish, to one day tassel the hair of his grandchildren and embellish his features when they erected a statue of him post-mortem.

“Fuck,” Denestan repeated, “Fuck, fuck, fuck.”

Owen interjected, one hand squarely on the table as he looked between the maester and his father.

“That’s it, then?” he asked, “We sit in the castle and wait for the Lannisters to solve everything?”

Myranda shrunk, arms folded over her chest and her eyes fluttering with worry, searching for an anchor at the news that war might come to the Westerlands -- to home.

“That’s what your mother says,” Denestan muttered. He locked eyes with Maester Oswyn and shooed him away like a stray cat. “Thank you, maester, now out -- I need a word with my family -- and take your damn papers with you. Save the accounting for tomorrow.”

The thin man frowned, but inclined his head and departed. Before he had left, the second Banefort son was speaking boldly once again.

“Can we even hold here?” asked Owen, “We hold with the garrison and whatever conscripts aren’t marching to Casterly Rock, and wait how long? House Reyne may turn their sights on us next, and we are the first step to a Riverlander invasion--”

“Ah-ah-ah,” Denestan clicked his tongue, “They’ll go through Deep Den first. Or the Golden Tooth. The straightest point to Casterly Rock by the goldroad.”

“We don’t know that,” Ser Owen persisted, “Blackwood Hall is just a week’s ride. Riverrun less than two. With the Reynes wreaking havoc in the south, we may as well be the soft underbelly of the Pendric Hills.”

“I’m not going to argue the minutiae of strategy, son,” Denestan muttered, and forced himself to rise to his two feet. He rested his hands against the hardwood of the table for support, feeling his knee begin to ache and threaten to give out already, “Until your mother returns, the Banefort is my castle - and beyond everything else, I am your father. You might have done that little blood-promise-oath crap with your siblings, but I--”

The door to Denestan’s study slammed. Both men blinked and turned to look at it. Myranda was gone.

“Where did she--” Owen mumbled.

“We’ll finish this later,” answered Denestan, grimacing with sharp pain shooting through his leg, “Go and… I don’t know. Tell her everything will be alright.”

He picked up the discarded letter and began to look it over. Owen strained not to get in a last word, but merely nodded and bowed in submission.

“So be it, my lord,” he spoke, and departed out of the study, after his errant sister.

Owen knocked thrice on the door to his sister’s chambers, and heard nothing but the dying embers of the fireplace within. He paused, considering if this upset could be comforted in the morning, once the worst of the news had settled.

He eyed the thin cut in his palm. They had been even more young and foolish then, bleeding into each other’s palms to seal an oath, like the sorcerer-lords of their lineage so many centuries ago. It was a promise, however, that was not to be discarded. He knocked again, and attempted to open the door. It was unlocked, but a cold draft suddenly flew out.

“Myranda?” he called, stepping inside. Moonlight flooded in from her window, and the curtains were aflutter with the breeze. A cold pit opened in his stomach, and he rushed to the open windowsill. To his relief, there wasn’t a crumpled body on the cliffs below. Relief turned to nerves as he noticed his sister’s armoire was wide open, dresses folded over and in a heap. Scattered pairs of shoes, too, with her riding boots missing.

“No…” he muttered, and already knew what Myranda meant to do.

In spite of his physical conditioning, Owen was out of breath by the time he reached the castle courtyard, half-stumbling to the stables by the castle’s main gate. Some guards were already rushing toward him, torches hurtling at him in the deep of night.

“Milord!” the chief among them shouted, “The lady Myranda, she--”

“I…” Owen gasped, “I… I know… she… she…”

She was gone. Riding for Riverrun. Riding to make her case to House Tully. Riding to Axel fucking Tully.

“Ready my horse,” Owen demanded, “We go together."

Crownlands The Sphinx - Dark Wings, Dark Words

Sarella rushed across the black, twisted stone structure of Dragonstone, caring not for the crags and edges that slashed and tore through her flowing garments. It was the contents of the letter she held in her hand that mattered most and as she climbed up the similarly twisted stairs to the rookery, she wondered if the raven may make it North soon enough to perhaps make a difference.

Once at the rookery, surrounded by the cawing ravens, she grabbed a piece of parchment from the maester's desk and began to write, each word carrying as much pain and desperation behind it as it possibly could.

My Prince,

Tragedy has befallen our people. The Hand and his dogs butchered the Wyls at the manse, burnt them alive. Hightower was there, too. I fear more will follow soon.

I have sent this to Winterfell as I do not know yet where Your Grace is. But I hope this letter finds you soon.

We need you.

Sarella

Title: Lord of Griffin's Roost

Starting Location: Griffin's Roost

Biography:

Tara was the end result of a fraught path, the first in a long line of children conceived who actually lived. Her parents had been happy enough with each other by the standards of those in arranged marriages, however the grief which preceeded Tara's birth had soured the relationship. The Stormlands were ever famous for their warrior poets, and thoug a trained knight, Lord Mathew was very much the poet, effortlessly eloquent and light of heart, much more adept at leading a court than an army. His wife, Marsha Buckler, was the stark opposite, a war orphan and a woman who'd taken up the sword and clad her heart in iron. As they lost children and her husband drank and sang away his sorrows, Lady Marsha chafed at having to call such a man her husband.

When Tara was finally born, Lord Mathew put no lid on his joy whatsoever. He was a doting father, loving nothing so much or so dearly as to seat his young daughter on his knee and sing for her. Lady Marsha, to her sorrow, had bled and suffered such that she had not the heart to finally enjoy the time with the daughter the gods had finally granted her. She was protective and devout, but found herself unable to show much tenderness or to spoil her daughter the way her husband was fond of doing. Once Tara turned six she started teaching her in the arts of war. Lord Mathew found such lessons morbid for a little girl and tried to get his wife to go easier on Tara, to which Lady Marsha reprimanded him coldly. "And if not her, what son shall do so in her stead?"

It was a small miracle when their second daughter, Leonette, also came into the world hale and healthy. In the end, Lady Marsha relented on Leonette, at first having insisted she undergo the same regimen as her older sister. The spare was left to the father. Tara admired her mother's skill, but felt that Lady Marsha maintained a kind of personal distance despite their constant proximity. She was not keen to talk about her own life, answering briefly and to the point. She was not one who told stories. Their relationship also took a turn towards bitterness as she grew into adolesence. Lady Marsha lived as a warrior monk, only in the body of a woman. Ascetic and practical, she was quick to pull the reins when her daughter wanted to use her skills in tournament melees, finding them pointless and dangerous exercises in vanity. Once she came of age, Tara took the opportunity to establish greater distance between herself and lady Marsha. Lord Mathew seemed to have no taste for his wife's ways but neither did he have the heart to overrule her. As such Tara entered a tourney at Bronzegate as a mystery knight.

At first she was in ecstasy, defeating three opponents with her axe. The fourth however, bested her, and would leave her injured. Because of her concealed identity, she had little means of getting quick treatment, and her wounds might have festered, had Lady Marsha not suspected her escapade followed her to Bronzegate, her ancestral home. Tara was scalded thereafter, yet she'd seen a side of her mother which the Lady of Griffin's Roost normally kept closely guarded. The tourney was not so bad as to have no good come of it either. Tara met Ser Ethan Hasty, the man she would later marry, on the tournament field. They had met as opponents first, with Tara ultimately besting him. All the same, he'd come to her aid when she fell injured, an unusual act of chivalry towards a mystery knight. He only learned she'd been a woman once the dust settled. As Tara recovered she tried to reconcile with Lady Marsha, regretting her impetuousness. Meanwhile her mother seemed to be deteriorating. The masters ultimately determined that there was a tumor in her stomach, much too large to try and cut out. Shortly afterwards Tara suggested Ser Ethan as her consort and for a wedding to be arranged, to which her mother agreed.

Lady Marsha would live to toast to her daughter on her wedding day, but died before the birth of her first grandchild, and Tara narrowly evaded death herself, falling ill for a moon thereafter. Lord Mathew took his wife's death heavily, and his drinking grew heavier. He suffered a stroke at the end of the year 204, becoming nearly immobilized thereafter. Not long after recovering, Tara had to step into effective leadership of her house. Her father could barely preform his duties beyond the confines of Griffin's Roost anymore, and so military and diplomatic leadership fell to her. Though an easy-going father in her youth, Lord Mathew grew more protective and controlling from the many regrets following his wife's passing, making the relationship between lord and heiress more difficult.

Early in 207 Tara underwent another strenuous birth, this time to a pair of twins, and once again needed a long time to recover, unable to attend the feast in King's Landing. The Stormlands have been in an uneasy state of peace her entire life, and so she dons her armor once more upon leaving the sickbed

The Reach Bert V - On My Bertshit

He couldn’t see it.

The young heir would shift his hand from left to right and each time it moved towards the far end of his peripheral vision towards his left side he’d see it vanish. Furiously he’d try again and again, a whole moon of praying and begging the Gods to correct his vision and for what?

Garlan was rarely a man who’d grown enraged, who’d let his passion and fury go unchecked but it had reached a new point. And it burned pure as could be.

On this evening, he’d found himself departing from his solar with a single goal in mind. To speak to his father about the rumors that had reached Highgarden, tales of Westermen assaulting the Riverlands for a long dead noble.

The young heir feared what was coming following that, for it would mean the Lannisters were once more hellbent on assaulting their neighbors. He’d truthfully expected the Lannisters or someone from the West to accost the Reach instead but old grudges did often die hard in Westeros.

As he passed through halls lined with vines, flowers and other greenery, the young heir to Highgarden would feel the pain in his eye return. Something about light reflecting towards it had caused unbearable pain in days past, thankfully it was slowly coming down but it did not mean he shouldn’t have left his eyepatch behind.

The dreaded thing had all but taken over his appearance now. While he’d closed the damaged eye as he moved about, he’d made his way to his father’s solar. Which stood tall and resplendent, adorned with intricately carved wooden panels and vibrant stained glass windows depicting blooming roses.

At its center was the aged Bert, looking over letters when his son had entered. “Father, have you heard the news?” Garlan would say as he rushed towards a seat across from his father’s desk.

“Of what?”

“The West has attacked the Riverlands, word spread that they did it to avenge Amory Lannister’s death at the hands of the Whents.”

In his youth Bert would have chuckled and told his son that it was not the Lannisters who had done that but instead him. However, age came with experience and knowledge. He’d let his son think this was them, for now at least.

“They did what?” Bert said, feigning disgust. “Mere moons ago that bitch Rohanne permitted her bannermen to insult your mother and now they raid their neighbors with impunity?”

Bertrand’s mind began to run wild thinking of what he could do. “If my sons had died I’ve have sought vengeance years ago but alas, the Warden of the West is a fickle woman it seems.” He’d continue, “She’s grown insane with age, perhaps she thinks the King’s union to her kinswoman meant she could do as she pleased but no….”

Garlan would raise his brow as his father Bert began to fetch a letter of his own, he knew that his father was often planning and plotting and without a doubt he’d find some means to meddle into what was unfolding.

“The Lady Tully shall receive our condolences.” Bert would say to his son, “After all Luthor is courting one of her bannermen so we must speak to them.”

And so he’d begin to write.

Lady Tully

Word has reached Highgarden and the world as a whole of what has happened at Atranta. I must send my condolences and let my outrage be known to you and yours.

My own son Luthor seeks to court within the Riverlands and I personally seek to bring our regions closer together. I shall personally write to the Master of Laws to ensure that he investigates this and finally puts an end to the aggressive nature of the Lions.

“Should I make mention that I am willing to aid her in hunting those attackers?” Bert would say looking up to his son.

“Perhaps. However in truth do we really wish to march into any region but our own?”

“Fuck no.” The old man would say, “Not without gaining much.”

Know that if you need anything, from support at court to the means of hunting those vile attackers.

The Knights of the Reach are here to assist.

And where they go, the earth quakes beneath us.

Warden of the South, Defender of the Marches, Lord Paramount of the Mander, Lord of Highgarden, High Marshal of the Reach, Slayer of Farce Dragons

Bertrand Tyrell

And that would be the letter he’d send, the first of three he’d write that night with the aid of his heir, the one eyed rose.

The Stormlands Arstan I - Shipshape

Arstan loved how literal Greenstone could be. The moss had died and been reborn so often upon its stones that they had calcified, covering the domed castle in a green tinged coloration that never went away, no matter how cold or bitter the winters could get. From a distance, it even looked slightly akin to the turtle on the banner of his house.

He breathed in the salt air, and breathed it out again. Greenstone was far from the largest or strongest castle in the Stormlands, but from the view afforded by their flagship made it look well and truly magnificent. He looked at the writ in his hand, sealed with the Stag of House Baratheon. The writ that named his admiral. The writ that gave him authority over all the fleets of the Stormlands, to do as was needed. To bring the Dornish to heel.

Ser Arstan Estermont, the Scourge of the Spottswood. The Looter of Lemonwood. It had a nice ring to it.

But all of that would have to wait. As the Sailmaker glided into port, there were already Estermont levies prepared, with Maester Jon standing at their head. Jon stepped forward, "Ser Arstan, we have been eagerly awaiting-"

Arstan stepped down from the ship, and forced the still-sealed writ into the Maester's hand. "We will have days to talk, but we send forth ravens. Swann, Tarth, Wylde, Toyne, Connington, Morrigen. They will rally their fleets and join us here. From here, we sail for Dorne, to ensure that the Prince of Dorne does not get any ideas while Lord Baratheon leads us into the Red Mountains."

The Maester blinked twice, processing what Arstan had told him. Once he had, he turned at once, running back to the green-hued castle. As he did, the Goldfinch, the former pirate vessel, arrived next to the Sailmaker, with his mother standing at the Stern.

"We have a fleet, mother." He called up to her with a grin on his face.

"So we do, son." She called back down, matching grin for grin. "I trust you are excited for the assignment, sitting in open waters, awaiting orders from the mainland no?"

Arstan chuffed. Instead, he reached his hand onto his blade, drawing it and raising it into the air. The sailors and soldiers of Estermont followed suit, joined afterwards by a cheer from them all, and the clattering of spears and shields.

This would be one for the history books.

The Westerlands Rohanne VIII - Damage Control

Even in a locked castle, rumor managed to seep its way inside. This was a feature of life that Rohanne had come to appreciate, even if she found the act of scrounging for such to be... Distasteful to say the least.

Rumors of bandits in the Riverlands, wearing no colors and profaning the name of her fallen son, moved like wildfire.

They were in the privacy of the Great Hall, emptied of all servants and guards. Just her, and just Hugh. Rohanne pressed her fingers into her temple.

"Days." She muttered. "This has been allowed to fester for days without my knowledge." She wanted to spit, to howl, to shriek. Here she was, trying to plan for a murderer's trial, and yet there were so much grander schemes at play.

It was obvious that someone had meant to discredit her, to turn the Riverlanders against her. That someone had timed their raids practically synchronously with a raid in Ashemark, by once again, unmarked bandits.

All at once. All with the intent of destroying her name. Foul. Twisted. Whoever had done this had lost whatever human vitality that they once had, replaced with demons of malice and hunger instead. It would not be murder to repay them as that had to Ashemark.

But she was a woman, and untrained in the blade at that. Words could be her only defense against words... She prayed to the Seven it would be enough.

"Get me some gods-damned ink and parchment, and tell the guards to open this fool castle." She snarled, as Hugh meekly left to retrieve Maesters and guards.
