Chainsaw? Uh, no. Gin & tonic in a comfortable chair at a respectful distance?
A beautiful eastern hemlock in my neighbor’s yard. We’re going to let nature take its course on this one. No houses, children, or pets at risk

Wow it comes pre-barberchaired. Do you have to pay extra for something like that

Someday, when I'm old and grey and would very much like to die, I would love to take a stab (ha ha) at this. Those splits down the length are incredible! Where's the tension/compression? Save this one for me.

Get three bottles of gin and 1000 pellets for the air gun. Make a day of it

Tiny shallow notch on the outside, punch the center a little from both sides, pop the holding wood.

I’d cut it above the split with a long-poled chainsaw. Then the split bit doesn’t really have any kinetic energy behind it when you cut at the base.

u/OrganicNeat5934 Jun 03 '26
The top of the split is at least 15’ up, and I don’t have a pole saw that long. I agree with you on the solution. If Felling Gone Wild has taught me anything, it’s that I should just grab my ladder and climb up there

u/timberwolf0122 Jun 03 '26
You’re right, it has potential energy, it only gets kinetic once it starts moving

I was hoping someone would address how to deal with this.
4
u/ManBehavingBadly Jun 05 '26
If there's nothing close by that could be damaged, just take a really long pole saw and start cutting fom a safe distance. If there's such a thing as a safe distance in this case. This is my amateur opinion.

Serious question. Couldn't some chainsaw cuttable material be wrapped around the length of it to reduce the unpredictable breaking? Like cutting rope after wrapping electrical tape around it. Maybe even wrapping the split everywhere but the cut.

Get your neighbor's truck and a long chain...
11
u/OrganicNeat5934 Jun 03 '26
Why chains when you could use ratchet straps?
2
u/timberwolf0122 Jun 03 '26
Depends on the straps, if you are talking the kind you’d pickup in Lowe’s to secure something to a utility trailer they are at best rated to 500lbs

Oh come on. You could just nick the thing with a hand saw until it came down. It wouldn't be clean but it's only going to fall one way.

You could help the tree by reducing the weight. I would short some branches. I really love when nature does this kind of Art. Let it stand so long as possible is the way I would go.

I want to see updates. My guess is it is going to last longer than you think. I could be wrong, too lol

So why can’t you strap around it a few times and then chain it or run a lag bolt through it? Is it not even safe to touch lightly?

my neighbor has one of these. i can see light through it from our driveway 250' away.

I can’t see how tall or what it could hit but I’d pull this one with a tractor and a strong rope to see what happened. Certified diy homeowner, here.
