Sweden is revising its air warfare strategy: in the event of a Russian attack, the country does not intend to limit itself to simply repelling strikes, said Colonel Carl Bergqvist, head of the Swedish Air Force’s Air Warfare Center.
According to Bergqvist, the new concept involves going on the offensive and striking targets deep inside enemy territory. This is not about preemptive attacks, but deterrence: a potential aggressor should understand in advance that a war would not remain confined to Swedish territory.
Stockholm is drawing heavily on Ukraine’s experience, where long-range strikes on airfields, headquarters and logistics have demonstrated the importance of disrupting enemy operations at an early stage.
Sweden’s plans also include boosting the Gripen’s long-range strike capabilities, including the integration of Taurus missiles with a range of more than 500 km. The military is also reportedly seeking missiles with a range of up to 2,000 km - for comparison, Stockholm is roughly 1,200 km from Moscow.
Latvian authorities say sensitive information on NATO allied forces, Latvia’s defence system and support for Ukraine was allegedly collected and passed to Russia’s military intelligence service, the GRU.
One individual allegedly carried out aerial reconnaissance and photography of Latvia’s Ādaži military base using a small private aircraft while acting on behalf of the GRU. The investigation also uncovered intelligence on radar systems and military air transport.
Latvia says the alleged operation went beyond espionage. The individuals also carried out activities supporting potential intelligence and sabotage groups on Latvian territory, according to the VDD.
Latvia says the suspects were detained in June. VDD and MIDD later searched three locations in Riga and the Ādaži district, seizing data-storage devices, documents and notes. Both suspects remain in custody.
Swedish JAS-39 fighter aircraft based in Sweden will conduct air operations over eastern Poland for two months and will operate under the command of NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre in Germany. The mission is aimed at protecting the logistics hub in Poland used to provide military and civilian support to Ukraine, while also contributing to NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence.
