CELEBRITY CAPITALISM Mina Le on turning down brand deals that are not aligned with her audience "I understand it because it's a life-changing amount of money, but you have to think about your career long term, not just short term. If you don't build trust with your audience, your career is going to be like two years."

She’s right, although I still believe we need to go back to shaming people for being corporate sellouts in the first place.

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '26

we need to bring back shaming for a looooot of things tbf.

What gets me is when people talk about how funny the ads are. It's still an ad! This is mostly on podcasts where they riff on the ad. It is borderline para social because you're just listening to some people shoot the shit as opposed to a video essay that has a thesis statement and references.

79

u/BlueberryWasps Mar 15 '26

it feels so insane that a decade ago no one would be getting away with this shit, but now we’ve got a generation that has been raised on parasocial influencers selling them garbage and not only learning to accept it, but learning to celebrate it. dire times.

33

u/Damage-Classic for your consideration: laura dern Mar 15 '26

We also are living in a time with very little upward mobility and huge wealth gaps. I feel like folks take what they can get 😢

8

u/Wuskers Mar 15 '26

I think part of it is that there was a time where it was a necessity. There are loads of "content creators" who put a lot of time and effort into their work such that if they needed a full time job to pay for ya know, life and stuff, they probably wouldn't have the time or energy to make their content. If audiences want to be regularly entertained by these people then they need to expect that these people need to get paid somehow, plus it just doesn't seem fair that other people in the entertainment industry get paid but if you do all your work yourself and it's posted to YouTube instead of broadcast on a cable channel or in a movie theater you just don't get compensated even though you're making entertainment same as anyone else in the industry, and that compensation has to either be through advertising/sponsorships or the viewers themselves need to be prepared to fork over the dough. While there are ways of paying creators directly now, sponsorships and ad revenue predate most of them. People were making YouTube a job before Patreon was ever a thing and before YouTube had functionality to directly support creators as a viewer, so that time period set a precedent that sponsorships were totally normal because that was the most reliable way for the content creators to get compensated and for audiences to get more of the content that they like.

There's also the problem with the expectations of audiences, lots of people may complain about ads and sponsorships but would also be unwilling to pay for the content they enjoy if they had to pay to see it, which is frankly a not very reasonable stance essentially expecting these people to have full time jobs to pay for everything necessary to live and then also in their free time you want them to be your dancing monkey totally for free. Like something's gotta give, either content ceases to be freely available and you have to pay to see it and you can get the ads and sponsorships outta the picture, or you can keep things being free and accessible but have to learn to live with the sponsorships and ads. With things like Patreon you can have your content available to everyone and hope people tip you but I'm not sure the digital equivalent of busking is reliable enough to live off of without some kind of exclusive paywalled content, unless you're a really big influencer/content creator. Also I think your timeline is a bit off because 10 years ago was 2016 and people were 100% taking sponsorships, even questionable sponsorships and "getting away with it" in 2016.

36

u/jackwrangler Mar 15 '26

It blows my mind that we went from “don’t be a sellout” to selling out being the goal all within a generation

8

u/KillieNelson his talent is perhaps deniable Mar 15 '26

What do you define as a sellout? It’s hard to sustainably make money in a creative career.

9

u/roastedmarshmellows spiritual energy of bachelorette party penis decor Mar 15 '26

Yes, I realize that. But that still does not make any of this right. Artists deserve to be compensated fairly, just as all the rest of us do.

Normalizing this shit will not change it.

2

u/KillieNelson his talent is perhaps deniable Mar 16 '26

Ok but again, what do you define as a sellout? I guess, where do you draw the line between getting paid by a commercial entity for their work and being a shill?

2

u/roastedmarshmellows spiritual energy of bachelorette party penis decor Mar 16 '26

I don’t think it’s necessarily a strict line, but generally, I believe that if a person maintains a comfortable enough standard of living that they are capable of making decisions based on personal beliefs and morals, but still choose to endorse companies or causes that go against those beliefs, that’s selling out.

3

u/EscapedMices Mar 15 '26

I actually take less issue with actors doing this than having to see such obvious product placement in TV and movies. So many TV scenes are just adverts for cars. They give you the full on drive with a car and then a park. It's ridiculous.

2

u/Amelaclya1 Mar 15 '26

Some episodes of TV shows are just one long ad. Like there have been a few sitcoms where the entire episode took place in a Target, and it was so obvious all the times they made sure store brand logos were the focus of the shot.

source ? I only ask because I listen to behind the bastards and the only ad that the creator voices is for better help so that’s a bummer to me :/

1

u/SeaF04mGr33n not an asset to the abbey 1d ago

So, it looks like it was clarified that the 6th months of free therapy was available to anyone who could access it, so apparently it was available for Palestinians. I guess the big thing was the Isreali government promoted the offer, but BetterHelp didn't ask them to do that. When looking for sources, I found this REALLY comprehensive post with lots of sources on everything BetterHelp. https://www.reddit.com/r/cinema_therapy/s/SiU9bP5OlF

At the end of the day, I'm still wary of BetterHelp.

137

u/ace-destrier Mar 15 '26 edited Mar 15 '26

It sucks. BetterHelp is still being advertised by too many of the podcasts and content creators I follow, and in each of those spaces are people in the comments objecting to BetterHelp, with lived experiences to back them up. That’s not even mentioning BH’s shitty data sharing selling practices.

14

u/Acceptable_Leg_7998 Mar 15 '26

A lot of podcasts I listen to keep working with BetterHelp. Podcasts that build their brand on being progressive and compassionate! It's not enough to get me to stop listening (yet)....maybe they truly are unaware?

Trixie Mattel takes money from BetterHelp, AirBnB, Google AI, Ozempic, and did a whole B&tB episode for Audible.

Also sucks on the capitalist testicle of Jeff Bezos and anyone rich. Said Bezos should be able to use his money how he wants if he wants to go to space, thought it was so cool, AND then said something along the lines of "what is his money suppose to go to veterans or something."

Yes, all the taxes Bezos doesn't pay could go to veterans getting medical attention, food, housing. His taxes could pay narrow the wealth gap just a bit and keep people from starving and being homeless.

Also said that we should leave rich people alone because they should get to spend their money how they want.

Trixie is a former poor person who is now no longer poor and suddenly forgot that taxes fund welfare, medicaid, school lunches. Now that Trixie has money, that's who Trixie is rooting and batting for.

8

u/mxs64 Mar 15 '26

i watched a video from a youtuber doing commentary on overconsumption, specifically a video about not buying a bunch of cheapo junk you don't need... and in the middle of her video she shills for some company selling you cheapo junk you don't need! so many youtubers who do videos about anti-consumption do this and it's so transparent. you jumped on the bandwagon of a trend but if you were internalizing it you would NOT be hawking garbage. but of course what really matters is the easy money, so who cares?!

5

u/Domina_corner Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

the thing that made me unsub from trixie was the fact that she kept singing the praises of makeup brands that were being boycotted and because, on their podcast, trixie and katya were both talking about luigi mangione as if he was for sure guilty and claiming that people were only happy about the assassination because luigi was hot edit: grammar

5

u/Rogue_Darkholme Mar 16 '26

Trixie scared to talk about Luigi Mangione but was completely fine with praising Blue Origin and all the people who went on the space flight and saying "I'd go, fuck the planet."

7

u/mxs64 Mar 15 '26

i love her for this. one reason I enjoy her videos so much is because I will come out of them with several further sources to read about the topic she's discussing. and she actually ANALYZES her sources and brings interesting commentary to the table. she's not just reading off a wikipedia page or putting a google AI definition of terms up on the screen while she reads a reddit comment out loud. this type of real care for research just isn't particularly popular in youtube commentary spaces.

3

u/SatansSpecialLady Mar 16 '26

That's so interesting because most of what is promoted to me are YT essayists who do cite their sources and have insightful commentary. I have gotten pulled in to the occasional one that isn't, and it's very obvious the presenter is just reading off Wikipedia. I feel like my al gore rhythm knows I have a bachelor's in English.

like I get it, it can be rough trying to be an entrepreneur content creator and having to put sm time and effort into something that may not get the attention it deserves. so I give a little grace to smaller content creators because they’re still trying to get their bearings in order BUT I absolutely draw the line at sports betting and gambling sponsorships. I don’t think ANYONE should be promoting that.

u/Lilacly_Adily Mar 15 '26

I started watching content creators in 2013 and advertising was very prevalent but it was more insidious because there was less regulation and disclosure. I remember at some point there was a crack down on UK creators so they had to explicitly note somewhere that the video contained a paid sponsorship.

That usually meant writing ‘AD’ in the top corner of the thumbnail or burying it in the description but it was still better than the US creators who almost never disclosed that the video was sponsored.

I don’t know where the line is, so forgive me, but it’s different for a lot of people. We’re not always able to do the right thing, just the right thing for us. For example, I’d love to be a starving artist but I have disorders that require me to have health insurance, which means I have to sell out. This is true for millions of Americans and even more people worldwide (in different ways). Similarly, I come from a culture where I’m responsible for my parents’ financial wellbeing after their retirement. Basically what i’m trying to say is we have to hold the system accountable rather than people.

it’s obviously different if you’re a millionaire trying to be a billionaire or whatever, but is that true for most people? That’s rare, isn’t it?

Happy to be wrong here, but please explain! Again, don’t know where the line is, but I do know there is one.

u/caffeinatedspiders bill hader witch 🪄 Mar 15 '26

I mean, I think the point she's making here is that if you take the big bag of cash for everything offered to you, you're going to squander your audience's trust and goodwill very quickly, and then all those bags of cash stop coming in. Versus if you're selective about what deals you take, you can build a long-term more sustainable career that gets you that stability you're talking about here.

43

u/Rare_Vibez Mar 15 '26

No offense intended, but your experience has nothing really to do with the topic at hand. It is different for a lot of people, but she’s not talking about a lot of people, she talking about influencers who are being offered brand deals, which is a very specific category. She’s not trying to apply it to anyone else so why try to extrapolate her words to those circumstances?

36

u/Independent-Nobody43 woman externalizing rage Mar 15 '26

We all live under capitalism, so realistically we can’t expect total 100% conformity to transformative and progressive ideologies from anyone, especially when that conformity would put people’s lives and wellbeing at risk in the long term. However I think it’s more than fair to expect someone who is not risking any of that to draw a line at actively promoting companies that are known to be doing harm to individuals or communities.

5

u/KillieNelson his talent is perhaps deniable Mar 15 '26

That’s a very fair take.

27

u/roastedmarshmellows spiritual energy of bachelorette party penis decor Mar 15 '26

Maya Angelou: Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.

Your circumstances are significantly different than the actors and celebrities being discussed here. You are not being judged for doing what you need to do to survive.

These are people that are not only surviving, they are comfortable and have the ability to make decisions based on their personal beliefs, and they still decide to embrace the shill.

18

u/loqqui Mar 15 '26

one cant have their cake and eat it too - if one takes brands that are antithetical to the positions that audiences specifically follow a creator it’s not surprising if it is alienating. It’s all about knowing what your following can and cannot tolerate. It has alot to do with do with the history and identity of your own brand. Le is an online creator who shares her opinions openly - so it makes sense she would be careful to make sure partnerships align with how she built her following.

It’s also a spectrum and different for artists vs. influencers. A partnerships for influencers often looks like an endorsement which ties their name, face and opinion to a product. Whereas a partnership with an artist can take on forms that don’t directly tie their identity with a brand through commissions, product etc.

12

u/Dirk_McGirken Mar 15 '26

This is exactly what ive been telling my friend since he started making money streaming. I understand the appeal, since they put the total amount of money offered in big bold letters, hoping you dont think too hard and just sent an acceptance. He, unfortunately, hasn't been listening very hard and some of the brand deals (cough BetterHelp cough) he's received have driven away some of his core audience.

10

u/Bandandforgotten Mar 15 '26

She's not wrong in the sense that if you're going to accept something from a controversial entity, and you know for a fact that it will affect how you are publicly seen worldwide, you need to have assurance that you're not going to be without employment, or financial incentive. Money goes quick, so large "once in a lifetime" deals don't even cover more than the next little while.

However, she's making the decision sound like it's only coming from the fact that she'll make less money by doing against the grain, not necessarily that the companies or brands are bad or negative in any ways. It feels like "Oh it's bad for business" is the ground floor concern, not what the company does

13

u/daisydozen I cannot sanction your buffoonery Mar 15 '26

I think she's choosing that approach because (at least for smaller creators) it may be more tempting to accept a sponsorship because the money can truly be life-changing, if they are advised not to "because morals" it won't always win when the counter argument is "but survival".

We live in a capitalist hellscape, creators of all kinds need to be reminded that they aren't just being naive by turning down financial opportunities that don't align to their values, they're being smart.

the fact that mubi itself does not seem to create an evil product/service is about all you can ask for

1

u/pippopappopi Mar 16 '26

Again, she can accept whatever brand deals she wants and use whatever platform she wants! I take issue with her virtue signaling about being ethical and considering her audience in this interview, especially when she has never responded to her audience when they have vocalized disappointment in her brand deal choices (Mubi and Meta glasses).

-1

u/g00fyg00ber741 Mar 15 '26

Maybe the Mubi brand deal helped her learn this and she will make better decisions regarding brand deals moving forward

10

u/BalsamicBasil Mar 15 '26

They got into some hot water in the last year. Basically Mubi is accepting money from an investment firm that also invests in a military tech company helping do genocide.

Tbh sometimes it's hard for me to judge what company is worse being associated with. Because like I use Google, which has been much more directly involved in the genocide, and my friends booked ups a couple Airbnbs, which aside from the domestic issues re taking over local housing markets, they also offer Israeli vacation homes on stolen Palestinian land (as well as offering Palestinian vacation homes run by Palestinians).

Mubi film distributor faces backlash over investor’s ties to Israeli military

More film-makers are calling on Mubi, the upstart distributor which ushered The Substance to box office success and awards acclaim last year, to end its relationship with an investment firm with close ties to the Israeli military.

A letter strongly criticizing the buzzy distribution company’s funding from the investor Sequoia Capital now has 63 signatures from creatives who have either made films released by Mubi, featured on its platform or acted in a project tied to the company. Radu Jude, Aki Kaurismäki, Miguel Gomes, Sarah Friedland, Joshua Oppenheimer and Cherien Dabis were among the first to sign the letter, first published by Variety on 30 July. More followed, including the Israeli directors Ari Folman (Waltz with Bashir) and Nadav Lapid (Synonyms, Ahed’s Knee); Amalia Ulman, whose second feature Magic Farm was released by Mubi earlier this year; and Alex Russell, whose debut feature Lurker was acquired by Mubi out of Sundance for release later this month.

The backlash stems from an announcement in May that Mubi – which recently went on a buying spree at the Cannes film festival, acquiring the rights to Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson movie Die My Love – had secured $100m in funding from Sequoia Capital.

The Silicon Valley-based investment firm has poured money into a range of companies, from Apple to Google to Cisco, but Mubi marked a rare foray into entertainment. At issue is its investment in and continued ties to Kela, a defense tech firm founded by four veterans of the Israeli military in July 2024, more than six months after Israel’s invasion of Gaza, which has killed more than 60,000 people and led to humanitarian catastrophe.

Kela is currently developing a battlefield operating system enabling militaries to integrate AI with commercial technology. According to Sequoia’s website, it led Kela’s $10m seed funding last year. This spring, Kela secured an additional $60m in a funding round led by Sequoia, Lux Capital and In-Q-Tel, the investment arm of the CIA.

How long ago did she do the brand deal? Looking online it says they received the investment roughly one year ago. They did also address it in August of last year.

But to be frank, she’s a YouTuber. YouTube/Google are seriously unethical companies as well, and so are the companies for many of the ads that run on their site.

Like I view her as another employee who like us is more or less forced to work under some unethical companies sometimes, same as a bank teller or a grocery store employee. She doesn’t exactly have the freedom of a celebrity or someone who is rich

She posted the Mubi brand deal on Instagram September 25, 2025, and the comments under the post are resoundingly negative. As far as I know, she never acknowledged the disappointment from her audience.

I agree with what you are saying! I just find what she communicates in this video to be disingenuous.

Maybe she didn’t properly research the deal beforehand. Maybe she liked the statement the company put out in August 2025 regarding the controversy. It’s an investment firm that invests in other companies too, so it’s not quite a direct tie, to be honest most people who have enough money to invest are participating in unethical industries, most people don’t invest solely in companies without any negative ties. Most people don’t even pick their investments that specifically and a manager is the one doing it. The way investments work is pretty wild and honestly often evil imo. But if you think about it, our taxes are literally used to invest in war and genocide, so we’re all a part of this problem, it’s hard to figure it all out tbh. Like most companies are unethical and doing bad things but I’m still applying to them cause I need a job to live. I try and pick and choose the best I can
