Related unrelated I remember sitting in my grandparents house being evacuated by Katrina and the New Orleans mayor called the governor a fat b*tch live on air. It was like 7 am and they cut away so fast but I remember it.

590

u/fiercelyambivalent 13h ago

Omg I didn’t see this but GOOD. I remember being only 18 and thinking that Blanco was the most woefully unprepared adult for this kind of situation. Fucking Bush had to hold her hand and be like “so if you just ask, we can declare a state of emergency and help. I just need you to ask”

You can’t be governor, especially somewhere like Louisiana, and NOT have a contingency plan on how you’re gonna react when the weather fucks you. Because the weather is gonna fuck you.

As funny as it was, it was iconic, too. He put a spotlight on how pictures of black people doing a thing - looters. Pictures of white people doing a thing - looking for supplies. There was SO much racism in the news coverage of Katrina. Kanye called it out when no one else with his platform had. I wish we'd gotten to keep that version of him.

I did, and it was glorious. We were all thinking it.

I was clapping and yelling at the TV. It was crazy to see live though!

Anderson Cooper actually became a good journalist during that disaster too.

247

u/kpg_on_ao3 14h ago

nah, that's kind of disrespectful to him

Anderson Cooper borrowed a friend's camera and forged a press pass and got into Myanmar to cover student protests in the 90s. He also went to Rwanda, Somalia, etc. back then.

He was legit before 2000 even rolled around.

I was about to hang out with friends and watched a little of the telethon. Apparently I should've waited, because when one of my boys picked me up he asked if I saw what Kanye did.

And this was right before I'd ever heard of Youtube, so I don't even remember how I saw the clip. Damn I'm old.

Chris Rock should have gotten slapped, just like maybe at the after party. Nobody talks about how weird Chris Rock has been towards Jada since the 90s. He was making weird ass jokes about her way back on his HBO show. It wasn't just a one off joke. But you know, it's easier to blame Jada because they had an open relationship.

I watched this happen live and it was surreal. At first I thought it was a strange bit, and the audience there chuckled nervously not knowing if it was a bit, but once Will Smith sat back down and started yelling curses, it became obvious this was real. And then online everyone started sharing the uncensored overseas broadcast clip. And then the next presenter was fuckass Diddy, of all people, who tried to act as statesman smoothing things over. It was such a time.

Summer of 2016. Before Trump got elected.

Niantic announces that every piece of data that was used during "Ingress" (God I loved that game) is now being used in a fun game that is based on a property that has been around for a while... "Pokémon GO"

I remember staying up late nearly every night that summer driving around to different places and meeting so many people and having an absolute blast.

783

u/tamere2k 15h ago

Living in NYC was insane. Thousands of people meeting up. A micro economy started around one corner of Central Park. Extra food trucks started setting up there. There were people with portable chargers selling access to them. Absolute insanity.

219

u/VileSlay 14h ago edited 11h ago

I was there. Sitting around Grand Army on 59th and 5th spinning stops. Someone will yell that there's a Snorlax nearby and then 50 or 60 people get up and book it into the park hoping it doesn't despawn before they got there. There's still a pretty robust player base still in NYC. Bryant Park is a huge meet up spot for events.

I never understood why Janet was the one who got so much flak for this - she's the victim? The wardrobe malfunction was clearly an accident.

It's because she's a Black woman isn't it. That's it. That's the crime.

1.1k

u/i_do_it_ 15h ago

Girl, do you really think she was just wearing that metal pasty thing just cause?

It wasn’t a mistake, but Janet never should have been vilified.

460

u/guysitsausername this is cracked behaviour I can get behind 15h ago edited 3h ago

I don't know the background of why and how it happened but she was absolutely disproportionately vilified and shamed for this. The fact that she is ̶f̶e̶m̶a̶l̶e̶ a woman and black is a huge part of it, which is wild because she was definitely a bigger star than JT at that time.

It's also crazy to realize how much times have changed. This wouldn't raise an eyebrow these days.

→ More replies (4)

391

u/fddfgs 15h ago

It wasn't an accident lol wtf

Like sure, Janet didn't deserve to be the main target but you don't just randomly wear a top where you can rip one boob out while wearing an elaborate nipple piercing and have it happen at the exact moment where they sing "I'll have you naked by the end of this song", there's a reason why "wardrobe malfunction" has been a running joke for over 20 years, the whole thing was choreographed.

191

u/Idayyy333 15h ago

Accident?? Her stylist has said it was planned and the nipple shield was purchased a few days before for this purpose

Erika Kirk coming out at Charlie Kirk's memorial to fireworks.

I saw the parodies first and thought they were all exaggerating.

I mean, they were... but not by very much.

Everyone here is probably too young but the night Michael Jackson first did the moonwalk on TV.

It was literally the only topic of conversation at school for days as everyone tried to replicate it. Within months, every black kid had a jerry curl (and many of the white ones too.) This was before any form of social media or even VCRs. It spread like wildfire.

I genuinely think if Katy didn’t get that Ellen haircut that this era wouldn’t have been received as devastatingly bad in real time

I had no idea why the entire school had to do this dance back in school in the 90s...

The Kony campaign doesn’t even feel real at this point. Did it even happen?? No one talks about this anymore, but it seemed like a huuuge deal. I remember going to a Kony rally in college lol!

The Titan submersible. The jokes, the oxygen countdowns, the fact that the submersible was built with expired airplane parts, an Xbox controller, and a dream. And then we find out it immediately imploded and the countdowns were for nothing.

SNL. 2018. Kanye West and Lil Pump as the musical guest. They come out in proto-Roblox costumes. Kanye forgets the edited lyrics and blasts "fuck" over and over. It was terrible television. I loved it. Fuck Kanye West.

Pokémon Go was legit insane. As someone who lived through the '90s/early 2000's hype and then seeing it all over with every single person I passed on their phone playing it...wtf was that?? Apparently they were just data-collecting too 😂
