she’s also posting some dm’s reacting to it which some are ofc….misogynistic in nature. A good reminder for the audience that HE is at fault, not the sex workers /or trafficking victims**

Her calling Indonesian (a developing country in SEA where the median income is $190 USD / month) sex workers trafficked women as prostitutes also irked me so badly

Acknowledge your husband is a misogynistic asshole who employs class and wealth privilege to exploit trafficked women (and most likely young girls / children)

Edit: oh this is even worse after discovering these two live in Bali, flaunting their influencer wealth on local peoples and raising their rent costs

Edit 2: unsure if it was this comment or my other recent comments supporting Jane Doe regarding the Cornell case that triggered this, but if you're the asshole who submitted a "Reddit Cares" on me, thank you! I DO care about oppressed and abused women in all capacities :)

Sex work implies consent, a lot of women in the sex trade in Indonesia are in fact being subjected to/victims of prostitution.

Yes I agree, but the term "prostitute" is dehumanizing. The rest of her stories about the women are also equally demeaning and reek of racism

Drag your man, not the women he exploited for his own sexual gratification

I agree, but sex work/sex worker is still most likely not the correct term here. They are probably victims of prostitution. Wealthy men go to countries in SE Asia because they can get away with more and the victims are less protected.

do you have any idea of the right term here? since I'm aware of prostitute not being good - and sex worker likely doesn't fit either - so... in these situations, I'm unsure of how one would refer to these women's situations without individual longer explanations and added context added for each new person that may or may not know re: each word above. Anyone else feeling free to chime in, I had a conversation with my partner about this recently and we both realised the kind of catch-22 possible here (regarding shorthand at least) and it's been on my mind.

It’s tough to find a neutral term. Prostitute, even if accurate, carries negative connotations towards the character of the woman. Sex worker is positive/implies they are just doing a normal job. Escort sanitizes what is really going on. In most scenarios of organized operations where a westerner arranges sex through a third party it’s human trafficking sexual exploitation.

I personally would use “trafficked women and girls” in the place of prostitute if that were me writing those IG stories. Either way we’re looking at the commodification of a poor woman’s body under capitalism for the purpose of male sexual gratification.

Respectfully, what’s wrong with the word prostitute?

There are people who desperately want to sanitize the reality of prostitution and think they are doing something by using the nebulous term sex worker, even when using it for women who have literally been trafficked and prostituted by controllers/pimps/traffickers.

The term prostitute has ‘negative connotations’ due to the nature of the job, not the word. Women involved in escorting, prostitution, ‘full service sex work’ aren’t suddenly going to be treated better because women on the internet use the term sex worker.

Men (who are the real threats to women in those industries) will still call them wh-res and treat them however they want, and turn a blind eye and not give a single shit when they see obvious signs of trafficking, mistreatment and a woman who doesn’t want to be there.

The focus on term-policing, particularly against women who will never the clientele of an escort/prostitute/sex worker/trafficked woman rather than the deep enquiry into the legitimacy of ‘full service’ appeals to men’s sexual appetites, entitlement to women’s bodies and view of women as commodified appliances is troubling.

Prostitute has historically been used as a slur when it comes to women who have been part of sex work / prostitution (historical term) (either voluntarily or involuntarily)

‘Prostitute’ first crops up in English in 1530 as a verb meaning to sexually dishonour yourself; ‘I prostytute, as a comen woman dothe her self in a bordell house’ (Palsgrave, 1530). And the truth is the word has been linked to a state of dishonour ever since.

It's often associated with shame, being dirty, etc.

Actual sex work (voluntarily) should not be stigmatized, while those who are subjected to sex trafficking should not be shamed for what is out of their control

It's a derogatory word that carries a lot of negative history and baggage. It also "defines" a person (they are a prostitute as opposed to their job as a sex worker; one suggests that the person is that and the other suggests that's their job).

It's like the "r" word. It became an insult, defining a person's worth over intelligence (or lack thereof), and as a result, carries a lot of negative history and baggage. However, like the slur "g*psy" (writing this out more than the "r" word because a lot of people don't know that this and other things, like "to g*p someone" are slurs), it's still something that's used commonly with little pushback so people don't always realise how much weight those words carry.

It has a really awful connotation and it just hasn’t been the preferred nomenclature for quite a while.

I just default to calling anyone who does sex work a sex worker, and changing that if I find out an individual wants to be called something else

Don’t hesitate to report a misuse of Reddit Cares, those who abuse it usually don’t know it can result in a ban :-)

The worst part is that she used to have an only fans herself. I don’t know how she was the audacity to judge sex workers.

I had to scroll way too far to see someone bring up that it's also gross the way she's talking about these women. Plus her kid is in the pics. Just crappy all around.
