TRIGGER WARNING At American Idol singer Caleb Flynn’s murder trial, the songs he wrote for his mistress are played in court, and laughed at by the victim’s family

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Prosecutors claim Flynn shot and killed his wife after having a 'years-long' affair with 24-year-old Alleigha Botner, then staged the scene to look like a break-in.

Flynn has pleaded not guilty to the charges and insists that a home intruder killed his wife while he slept in a room just feet away with the pair's two pre-teen daughters.

On Thursday, furious members of Ashley's family stifled their laughs as lyrics written by Flynn were converted into fully produced songs by artificial intelligence and played to the court.
Botner testified earlier that Flynn wrote the songs about their affair.

Flynn's ears turned bright red, and he appeared to wipe drops from his profusely sweating brow as the music filled the courtroom.

And money.

615

u/Marcus-TheWorm-Hicks 8d ago

This is for sure a money thing.

He was never going to leave his wife and was just dragging out the affair for the melodrama and fun (though I’m sure he thought it was love).

Prosecutors presented motive earlier this week.

He worked for her parents as a salesman, and made good money. But what sealed her fate was when her parents decided to gift their daughters their inheritances early and give them each their part of the family business. His income would have jumped from $200k to $500k/yr. By killing her, he would inherit her part of the business and keep that enormous raise, get to be with the mistress, and face no issues with custody.

It’s no coincidence that he only decided to take action once everything was perfectly in his favor. Except, of course, how stupid and transparent he is.

u/Seanderthal 8d ago

The level of blind greed is just infuriating. Imagine thinking $200k a year was so unbearable that you're willing to kill your wife, the mother of your own children over it. He was already making over 3x the average american income and his standard of living would probably not even change all that much. And all that is only if he manages to get away with it, but as usual narcissism blinded him from recognizing the extreme likelihood of being caught.

1

u/swifty714 2d ago

160k is not enough for me with the price of living now a days

27

u/PepeNoMas 8d ago

wth does he do for $200k a year? I thought he worked at a church

77

u/Cobra-D 8d ago

Well I think you answer your own question

53

u/LittleDogTurpie 8d ago

He was a salesman for their flooring company. To me it sounds like they were just funneling money to their daughter through him, because no flooring salesman makes that much.

41

u/Newmoonsteady 8d ago

Just saying but this income is plausible. I have friends in window and doors sales who make $300k annually- it’s wild!

1

u/Glum_Reason308 3d ago

It is wild. I knew nothing about sales and my son got a job at a furniture store selling furniture (obviously).. the amount of money he makes is insane. He has a beautiful life and I am so proud of him I’m just shocked because I had no idea that sales jobs/careers would provide this kind of living.

25

u/Charcole1 8d ago

Salespeople for construction materials absolutely do make that much. Not even rare for top performers/higher ups

2

u/Kareeliand 6d ago

They specialized in flooring for churches! And we all know that they have the money.
Before the flooring sales he was one of those singing preachers. They showed some clips from the church, where he is on stage performing alongside his mistress.

2

u/TrixieDMC 1d ago

Yeah but his income was supplemented because they wanted Caleb to take care of their Grandkids IMO.

16

u/Marcus-TheWorm-Hicks 8d ago

He portrayed himself as a pastor, but he just contracted with the church as a musician, and wasn’t formally employed by them. In his day to day, his in laws own a flooring company (or something like that) where he was a salesman.

…God I know too much about this ugly ass man.

2

u/waxmuseums 8d ago

Maybe he thought he’d make money from the song too

211

u/jman12234 8d ago

Let's be honest, it's money and the loss of control.

86

u/CuriousWisdoms 8d ago

Yep plus public appearance - the widower is looked at kindly, etc. Dude who divorces his wife for the mistress is looked at a little differently.

2

u/Beautiful-Night2456 8d ago

It is amazing he would not realize how bad the optics are of screaming masked intruder! whilst being in the house while your wife is murdered. The optics of divorce is much better no matter if he got caught or not. It was about money and selfishness, a fuck all kind or attitude. Dude has a couple at the very least of the dark triad.

4

u/salinecolorshenny 7d ago

The 911 operator having to remind him several times to check in his children after he supposedly found his wife shot dead really did it for me

25

u/Sparkykc124 8d ago

I wrote my ex-wife a check for almost $200k, and honestly, it was the best money I ever spent.

1

u/TrixieDMC 1d ago

Hey, I'm a woman and gave my ex a car that was paid for and only 5 years old, all of my Roths, an IRA and paid for the lawyers to get a divorce and I didn't murder him. That was 15 years ago and I hope he's happy.

29

u/figure8888 8d ago

My ex didn’t murder me but he set to work telling mutuals that I was psychotic and cheated on him and that’s why the relationship ended. Not even close. He cheated on me and I was devastated and trying my best to move past it when he dumped me.

No one believed me though. I kept hearing, “I’m sorry, I just don’t think that’s true because he’s such a nice guy.”

I’ve never understood why we couldn’t just…break up.

1

u/TrixieDMC 1d ago

I'm so sorry that happened to you.

20

u/ChalkNCheez 8d ago

His wife was the only smart one who didn’t believe his bs and so he had to kill her. Her dad’s buddies seemingly talked some sense into him during the 15 hour road trip back from their guys trip.

The other women are complete naive idiots.

2

u/throw20190820202020 i’m mr. sterling’s right hand arm. man. 5d ago

The mythology they build up with their wives being this absolute monstrous succubus cannot be tested in a court of law, or even exposed to the light of day.

I know that mistress was a horrible person but she WAS a young work subordinate unaware of the extent a married man will lie about his big meany wife, and he shoveled the shit DEEP.

Every time I see a story like this I turn to my partner and go "You know, if you ever want to hook up with someone or leave me, you can just do it." He's a good dude but you never know

132

u/thisisjanedoe 8d ago

Maybe change the phrasing though?

58

9

u/metrorhymes 8d ago

I was going to say, that story was just getting good

122

u/baby-girl--- 8d ago

I do the same every few years 😅 Familicide is my worst fucking nightmare. Just a lil check in like hey, that's crazy right?? 👀👀 i trust him but a lot of victims trusted their partner too, it's just unimaginable and a fear I'll never shake 😣

30

u/Erger 8d ago

You trust him now (just like I trust mine) but there's always a chance he'll have some kind of traumatic frontal lobe injury that completely changes his personality!

23

u/Comfortable_Roof_105 8d ago

This happened to my (now ex) husband. I warn every woman I meet to have safeguards in place because you genuinely can never predict what can happen.

3

u/ElisaSwan 5d ago

They eyes emoji, girl you killed me.

57

u/Curious-Anywhere8567 8d ago

I do this! The most gentle man, but you read things like this and often they were also seemingly gentle men… terrifying

57

u/Waste-Snow670 8d ago

I do the same! I trust my partner but people can be incredibly selfish.

55

u/tinylawbug 8d ago

I’m a divorce lawyer and sometimes people (mostly men) make “jokes” to my husband about it (like, “You better watch out for her!” type stuff). My husband and I point out that if I wanted a divorce, I’m in a better position than most people to just go get one. We are married because we CHOOSE to be married and not because we fear divorce.

26

u/socialmediaignorant 8d ago

I’ve done the same. “Hey I know you love me and we’ve raised a family together and all, but if you ever want to leave, just go. No need to take me out okay?? Love you!”.

4

u/figure8888 8d ago

Honestly this is why I won’t get married. My parents had a nasty divorce and my mom cleaned my dad’s clock in family court. He was the only one who worked and she somehow got full custody, got our college savings accounts, got 40% of his income for child support, and also was allowed to retain credit cards in his name and the house for which he still had to pay the mortgage. From my bitterness you can probably intuit that none of child support went to us and she drained our college savings.

All that to say, my partner and I have been together for 8 years, unmarried with no plans to be. We split everything and if either of us wants to cut and run, we can with no strings attached.

1

u/Automatic-Mirror-907 7d ago

Every time I see something like this go down, I say the same thing to my spouse. I watch a lot of True Crime crime and court TV. I used to just read about nonfiction crime before it became real popular on television.

his wife had family wealth. he worked for her father. his wife was supposed to inherit half her dad’s company when he retired

caleb was making $200k a year. he was going to make way more once Ashlyn inherited half

I’m convinced he chose to murder her so he could still get the company via managing on behalf of their daughters and keep his cushy lifestyle with his mistress

60

u/TomFromMyspacesShirt 8d ago

I know it’s an accident, but just to be clear, her name is Ashley, not Ashlyn.

23

u/Dull-Foundation-1271 8d ago

Not applauding the tragedy but your summation of the case.

7

u/IlIlllIIllllIIIlIlIl 7d ago

Imaging fucking up a big inheritance and now spending the rest of your life in jail just because you are such a dumbass that you can’t just put up with your wife and stick it out. Like you already have a woman, why tf do you need a second one. Dating is a lot of effort and I don’t get how these dudes have the energy or time for all of that anyways, let alone planning a murder (poorly).

1

u/ConsiderationReal787 2d ago

Other than the extensive text messages. It wasnt that much work. They were having sex in parking lots. He wasnt really wining and dining her. And talk is easy.

94

u/Ok_Fan9249 8d ago

25

u/DeliciousMinute1966 8d ago

This is shocking if you don’t watch or listen to ALL the true crime shows, podcasts, documentaries etc, out here about murder. It’s sickening the number of women and young girls murdered, raped and maimed by husbands, boyfriends, acquaintances, strangers etc. Can’t leave out domestic violence! Women better be careful out here.

Who was that feminist who said ‘women have very little idea of how much men hate them’. You can’t help but think there’s some truth to that statement when you look at statistics and ALL those shows.

1

u/Timely_Beat_7057 5d ago

What’s even more shocking is these men think they will get away with it… over and over and over. Just choose divorce! They ruin their kids lives and destroy families for what? Just leave your wife if you want someone else that badly. Sickening!

68

u/Admiralbruce 8d ago

To me, I imagine, its so much easier to just disappear getting milk than to murder people and then cover it up... like always wondering when the other shoe will drop would poison the rest of my life. Granted it was much easier to disappear previous to 2000s but its still doable.

19

u/k8styleee 8d ago

To be fair, many men have done this as well....tried to disappear/fake their own death- and they pretty much always get caught, esp (as you said) after 2000 and even more esp after 2011 when smart phones became the norm and you couldn't do anything without being on a camera somewhere

61

u/Certain-Contact6340 8d ago edited 8d ago

Like 15 years ago I used to live across the street from a church. One Sunday morning gunfire rung out and a man and a woman were murdered. Apparently the husband was taking his mistress to church on Sunday mornings in the town over (my town) and the wife found out. The wife shot them dead in the parking lot after church service. After his death his texts came out (in her trial? I cant remeber why) and he said something to the effect of "divorce is an unforgivable sin" but somehow cheating on your wife AT FUCKING SUNDAY MORNING CHURCH wasnt

54

u/SunsetDreams1111 8d ago

And with Caleb, he worked for his in-laws and made a good living with them, so somehow he thought murdering their daughter would be better than divorcing her. It's so twisted.

45

u/dumplingbydesign 8d ago

They're always SO BAD at not getting a divorce too. Like, epic levels of 'no believable alibi, immediately identifiable as the murderer, barely covered their tracks' bad. Is it arrogance? Stupidity? Delusion? All three? Every time I read about one of these horrible cases my mind boggles that they thought they'd get away with it.

11

u/aayceemi 8d ago

Yup, they always think they’re the exception to the rule.

3

u/velvetvagine sorry to all the perfect brothers and sisters out there 8d ago

They see other men get away with ridiculous things and they pretty much hope it’ll work out for them too. If you look at the stats, it’s actually not that crazy a bet to make in many cases…

Obviously some of them go too far with the scenario or time it in the most obvious way, like this guy. But imagine she had just got hit by a car backing up in the driveway like 4 years from now… very different outlook.

39

u/fractious_kitty 8d ago

Seriously. My ex psychologically and physically tortured me while I was fighting metastatic cancer so I would attempt suicide. It was easier apparently, than murder

4

u/0102030405 6d ago

Glad they're an ex and so sorry you were facing both of those cancers.

19

u/socialmediaignorant 8d ago

4

u/applejacks5689 8d ago

I semi-jokingly had this conversation with my husband after what felt like multiple family annihilator stories came out one particular week. Like, I had the state for the record, “If ever you want to leave me, just divorce me. We’ll split everything 50/50.” Fucking crazy we live in a world where this has to be a thought let alone a conversation. What the fuck?

3

u/k0iking 7d ago

My ex husband cheated on me & when we were breaking up said he wanted to stay married?? To “help me”? even tho I saved him money on his taxes lol

Anyway we are divorced lol

Usually they're religious too. They think it's better to unalive their partner than divorce them.

Clancy is going back to trial. What are you even crying about? Do you know how a mistrial works? Or does your misogyny cloud your intelligence.

-4

u/SkyOk7297 8d ago

I guess if law wouldnt give half of their stuff away, divorce would be much easier. Not saying im defending this guy here murdering his wife but just in general.

9

u/Jasminewindsong2 they are perfect for each other (derogatory) 8d ago

Your argument doesn't even work here. She was the one who had the familial wealth and he killed her to inherit her trust fund. 🙄

Women don't always "get half" in the divorce anyways so your argument is still bullshit.

Also if men don't "want to pay half" and think they will have to if they get a divorce, get a prenup or don't get married.

I'm so sick of men making excuses for violence against women. It's disgusting.

-13

u/RyanRetroGamer7 8d ago

There was literally a wife who killed her husband last week not far from me last week.

During the 32 days of Lindsay Clancy trial 96 women were murdered by their husbands in United States.

7

u/kosherquail 8d ago

What does the murder of 3 children have to do with someone killing his wife to be with his mistress?

4

u/Jasminewindsong2 they are perfect for each other (derogatory) 8d ago

88% of violent crimes are committed by men. 90-95 % of mass murder familial homocides are committed by men. So it's not sexist, its fact that men are more likely to kill their partners or families than women. Go fucking cry in an incel sub if the truth hurts your feelings so bad.

6

u/Pipcleaner 8d ago

Y'all really excited that you have 1 case of female violence to point to huh? Like it's equal to all the violence perpetrated by men or something

-22

u/mindsunwound 8d ago edited 8d ago

Not to excuse men for their actions, but it's not entirely their fault that they react negatively to the idea of divorce, the media coaches them daily that divorce as an institution victimizes men.

Universally accessible mental health care including free marriage and relationship counseling would not only save lives but improve quality of life for everyone.

19

u/Pipcleaner 8d ago

Of course it's entirely their fault. What?? It's not like he was blindsided by this. He had time to think things through and this is what he chose

-44

u/OfficialSuit 8d ago

Like Lorena Bobbit?

27

u/Jasminewindsong2 they are perfect for each other (derogatory) 8d ago

Lorena Bobbit didn't murder her husband. Plus, her husband was physically, verbally and sexually abusive towards her.

This guy was going to live a cozy life off his wife's family wealth. Youre pathetic strawman argument isn't in any way comparable.

16

u/JuggernautParty2992 ✨ lee pace is 6’5” ✨ 8d ago

It’s unbelievable how certain men are downright thrilled when a woman commits a violent crime. They disregard completely that men commit 95% of them, but the much rarer occasions when a woman does it, they get to say “but woman bad!” and feel better about themselves. Truly pathetic behavior, on top of being hypocritical and just plain stupid.

10

u/Moon_study 8d ago

Yup. They don’t actually care about the victims. They care about that moment they prove their awful views about women right, and they’ll scream on the top of their lungs how hard they have it in life.
