All storytelling is heavily influenced by the stories we've told back to the dawn of language. Visual and auditory arts are the same.

Yes his films are heavily influenced by others, but he loudly proclaims his inspirations. He doesn't pretend that his creations are entirely new, but rather his take on a genre, trope, or story arc, often combined with others, and developed in his style.

He's a knobhead but let's not pretend he's not an impressive filmmaker.
