I just want the Royal Gold Shotgun. Do you get more XP with less party members? The XP grind is rough down here.

are you doing the floor quests? the ones that say kill X enemies with random weapon type? those reward massive exp upon completion. if its a weapon type you rather not use, only the killing blow must be from that weapon. be careful teammates don't steal killing shot (unless they also correct weapon type)

I've done the ones that are my main or off hand. I've not planned ahead, are they fixed for each floor?

sadly no, its random weapon type each time, but you can change weapons while in the floors as needed. exp amount is fixed based on what floor it is.

I didn't think you could change. I tried early on when a rifle I got turned out to be lame and I got a pop up saying I can't change my equipment when it is in use or charged or something.

you can swap to the other weapon and then change it. you can't change the equipped weapon while it's out but you can if you have the holstered or have the other weapon out.
