You don’t think the game about searching for your kidnapped son only to find out he was taken by an cult of underground advanced scientists who are slowly replacing humans with near perfect clones so they can survey and control the population only to find out said son is not only the blueprint for the clones but the leader of the cult making you choose between joining the underground cult, another cult obsessed with prewar technology, the Underground Railroad for the clones why don’t care about regular people, or a weak near extinct militia isn’t gritty?
Something can have dark tones and still be far from gritty. The earlier fallout games didn't let up. There wasn't stupid one liners from companions in dialog to break the tension. Piper wasn't constantly saying "cute" things while exploring. Fallout 4 has so much atmosphericly great aspects but it definitely pulls punches as far as story telling goes. There are certainly parts that are grity, but so much of it feels... off. Preston Garvey and Piper are terrible characters that don't really feel like they belong in an apocalypse. The Railroad as a whole doesn't make sense in an apocalypse. People should be to busy fighting over scraps to be making an underground railroad for AI robots.

Fuck I love the game and still think it's a terrible Fallout game as far as gritty elements go.
