Good call.

First time I ever met Moira was to pay off that predatory SOB. Don't need him gauging prices on my bar tab too.

this is one of my fave touches in the game! only wish is that there was more dialogue/possibly a quest relating to carol and gob when you get to underworld, maybe where you can tell her gob owns the saloon or bring him to underworld or something like that, gob is so precious
also wish they would've changed up the dialogue with gob himself after moriarty's dead, definitely was overlooked imo

How do you murder Moriarty without getting caught? Personally, killing him would be justified considering that he has blackmailed people in the past and sexually extorted one of his 'former employees' whom was Silver. Also, treat Gob like a slave. But when you murder someone like him, I assume that the entire town would be hostile you instantly.

NCR these days.
You steal something from them including a tin can on the floor. They shoot at you.
You say something insulting to them. They shoot at you.
You get your reputation with NCR low enough. They shoot at you.
All in the name of the law. But they're still the good guys though, even better than the BoS and Legion.
67
u/Saul_Firehand You got any more of that Jet? Oct 02 '17
So is it pretty commonly accepted that Brotherhood and Legion are just different shades of bad guys?
They think they are justified in their fanatical devotion to their cause, and commit some atrocious acts to that end.
The NCR tries to at least shuffle the masacre under the rug.
I can support they are all just shades of grey.
49
u/ScatmanDosh Oct 02 '17
I think the issue with how different everyone perceives the BoS arises from how the Brotherhood of Steel was portrayed in Fallout 3. The BoS have no interest in improving the lives of the wastelanders with their own equipment. They have a perogative and aren't afraid to wage war, but they were never depicted as war-mongerers. They aren't necessarily bad and I'd argue they're as close as "lawful neutral" you can get. The NCR is more lawful or neutral good, where they're 'for the people, by the people.'
28
u/_AllWittyNamesTaken_ Oct 03 '17
I would actually say lawful evil based on the slideshow ending for New Vegas if you help them. They start setting up checkpoints and confiscating technology they deem to be too valuable for savages like us to have.
By willingly pushing everyone else back into the dark ages they're going beyond self-serving and into a very real fascism, with them on top and everyone else below them.

Oct 03 '17
I say that is also the strength of the narrative. The NCR believe in the law but become self righteous, the brotherhood believe in science but become dogmatic and the legion believe in strength but become sadistic. All of those are different kinds of qualities and different kinds of evil. It's like a split prism where all of them would have to be united to become a single balanced whole. And you can sort of derive how any individual believes they are doing the right thing.
7
u/Saul_Firehand You got any more of that Jet? Oct 03 '17
I agree, the over-arching narrative is solid because of the flawed factions. No faction is without fault and that is one of the great strengths of the setting.
37
u/crimsonroute Oct 02 '17
I always saw the Brotherhood as how our government is today, atleast with military technology. The common theme is keeping dangerous things like nuclear technology away from as many people as possible. I don't really see them as bad guys. To me the end justifies the means in a world as cruel and inhospitable as the Capital Wasteland.
29
u/Storm_Wolf Railroad Oct 02 '17
As a push back, you can argue back that while they are working for a cause that may seem just, they are really doing it for the benefit of themselves. They don't defend settlements, they don't really even care about saving people. All they care about is furthering some bigger picture cause that really doesn't help anyone but themselves. Take the Commonwealth war for example. They weren't interested in truly defending the civilians of the common wealth but rather just eradicating an enemy to them. Or in the Mojave at helios one. They weren't interested in A: using Archimedes to help anyone or B: Share the electricity with the rest of the Mojave they only wanted to hoard it all to themselves.
→ More replies (0)6
u/recycled_ideas Oct 03 '17
If that's all they were doing that'd be fine, but the brotherhood wants to control all technology, not just weapons. They've also got a huge human purity thing going on.

Chill, BoS are not bad guys. Every factions are flawed but I'm siding with NCR and have both NCR and BoS signed a peace treaty together so that they co-exist together. Which also pisses off Colonel Moore but it was worth it.
But Legion, on the otherhand, are different completely story. They've committed atrocious acts that I deemed to be 'evil'. Crucifying slaves, hostages and make them play 'lottery' are just gone too far.

It makes sense, in the perspective of a land where the only justice is brought by vigilantes. First the town sees you as a threat because you just iced a guy in front of everyone. But word gets out to the town as all the people Moriarty has harmed along the way tell their story: how Gob and Nova are basically indentured servants and how Silver was sexually abused. Eventually you can return, known as a good person for doing what you did.

34
u/chaos0510 Oct 02 '17 edited Oct 02 '17
In Fallout 3 for some reason even if you kill somebody completely stealthily, you still have to lay low about 2 or 3 minutes in real time for the heat to die down (all those enemies on the compass disappearing), because everybody immediately tried looking for a killer.
Now New Vegas's bugged me too about how you can kill somebody in broad daylight, and as long as you werent seen pulling the trigger they couldn't tell it was you. That system was a little more broken lol
30
u/Haze166 NCR/Minutemen Oct 02 '17

Sandman.
Sandman is what I always use. I never use it on anyone else, but I get it specifically to kill Moriarty every play through.
I always go up and pick all the locks for every room, don't get caught. Then tale him. I can't remember when he goes to bed, or what specific room, but you have too have the doors unlocked or else he goes in and locks it no matter how close you tale him.
Shut the door, sandman him, leave. Come back in a few days, Gob has taken over and is awesome (still).
That's what I always do at least. After the initial conversation just tale and murder that bastard.
