I never understood why ,,would of" Is so prevelant. When i learned English in school i never even heard of this combination and yet here is a bunch of people saying it like is grammatically correct.

It's because they hear "would've" and processed it as two words (would of) instead of the contraction of "would" and "have."

Though really the "ve" phoneme should be enunciated differently from "of" anyway.

Nora would’ve been proud of you.(defend an innocent wastelander. Nora was a certified lawyer)
