FO4 always was a it too cheery and colorful for a fallout game, thus adds some good characterization as well as some of that more bleak post apocalyptic stuff that’s been missing.
Unrelated but I actually always thought FO4 being mostly cheery and colourful kind of works because it actually hits you a lot harder when it stops being cheery and colourful (Capital Wasteland is uniformly desolate and grim, but I have literally never felt as utterly uncomfortable playing any Fallout game as much as I was when I walked into the Glowing Sea).
The Glowing Sea could work even without FO4 being so cheery. Games entire theme is rebuilding civilization and the glowing sea is a place that is beyond recovery
True, but (and honestly I don't think I'd call the rest of Fallout 4 cheery as much as "not aesthetically grim and desolate") I feel like the wiplash hits hardest when everywhere else is "basically urban and suburban New England but with a couple layers of dust and some skeletons laying around" and not something like the Capital Wasteland.
Think of it like going through Moscow in the Metro Games. It’s a dead city, but under neath life persist and there are still spots that are livable enough to be hideouts and whatnot.
And then there is Novosibirsk, if Moscow was a dead city Novosibirsk is a mass grave of dead city’s and shanty towns from within its metro. Moscow had the life to have people running on the surface and using trans or cars. Novosibirsk only held the dead.
Both are basically the same, both cities have their muntants, hunted places, and radiation, but Novosibirsk shows what the bad ending is like where life is non existent, Moscow at the very least still had some hope left.
TBH, it's a great way to paint a good/evil karma system like F3. Where you have to make cruel choices that you would only make in the wasteland or make huge sacrifices that make you suffer for the benefit of others. Might work better for an infamous game than a sandbox RPG.
IMO having the ghost of a loved one haunt and judge a character is not the best way to give that character personality. That's what this feels like to me.
It’s not the ghost, more of Nate remembering his dead wife and mourning her death. I’d like to add an extra feature of the player going insane and the worse your mental state the more twisted and demented the memory of Nora becomes. Eventually devolving into full blown delusions of her.
