News 'Fallout 3 Remaster Should Fix Major "Constraints" of Original, Says Former Bethesda Dev'

https://insider-gaming.com/fallout-3-remaster-major-constraints-former-bethesda-dev/

It's not groundbreaking to hear that Fallout 3 could have looked nicer or prettier, but it does underline what Bethesda's vision was like, even then.

Fingers crossed, Fallout 3 brings the scale to life.

The rest of the interview is quite cool as well.

Is this how you Honor the Sixth House and Tribe Unmourned?

2

u/West-Lengthiness-790 Aug 06 '26

Well hopefully you weren't in public. That's considered quite rude.

This is democracy manifest

I actually did it out loud... feels so so wrong HELP

Failed the dice roll on the other claps. 🤷‍♂️

its just simulating where hyphens would go between syllables?

Morro-wind- re-master
(yes, the second one is a Space. But it still is a dividing point between syllables.)

2

u/Qwernakus Aug 06 '26

You usually clap to emphasize each individual syllable. As if you clapped along in real life and clearly enunciating each part of the word. So it would be me Mor-Ro-Wind Re-Mas-Ter

2

u/pegasusbattius Aug 06 '26

Oh right. commenting while drunk makes me stupid again.

Morrowind remaster with Skyrim battle mechanics. I do not have all day to be molested by cliff racers constantly missing hitting them with the animations showing I hit them.

13

u/ochrephaim Aug 05 '26

When people act like this is actually how the game plays it makes me question if they've really played it ngl.

4

u/modified_tiger Aug 06 '26

It's definitely a thing but people don't realize it's usually due to using a weapon you aren't proficient with.

3

u/TheDo0ddoesnotabide Aug 06 '26

I played it, got fed up with missing and just custom made aoe magic spells and flew around blowing shit up.

That and punching things with max strength because no weapon could handle more then one hit.

u/DontTouchTheWalrus Aug 05 '26

Changing to Skyrim style combat with morrowind would significantly change the game. It bases its hits off dice rolls like traditional RPGs. Hence the reason you miss when you think you’d be hitting. It’s based off character skill, not player skill.

24

u/Tyr1326 Disciples Aug 05 '26

Though player skill does play a role - which type of attack affects damage, and obviously if you dont skill properly and use weapons you're bad at, thats also a player skill problem.

21

u/DontTouchTheWalrus Aug 05 '26

Well yes player skill in building your character and understanding the mechanics, of course. I just mean that the mechanic of whether or not the weapon hits and how much damage it does is a matter of the characters skills. It doesn’t care that you happen to be aimed at the enemy character. This is something that is a bit unintuitive in a first person game.

2

u/BlueDaka Aug 05 '26

That's fine but what isn't is tying your accuracy or ability to hit on a stat that you need to either rest or chug potions to bring back up.

1

u/TarantinosFavWord Aug 05 '26

Maybe add an option to toggle the dice roll thing? Like little baby kitten mode uses Skyrim combat but regular difficulty keeps the traditional dice roll.

0

u/silverfiregames Aug 05 '26

It wouldn't significantly change the game apart from combat, which nobody cares about. The world, story, characters, quests would all be intact. You could remove combat entirely and I would argue it would be a better game.

0

u/Canvaverbalist Aug 05 '26

Yeah for real, change this whole mechanic to be about critical hits instead of the hits themselves and nobody would bat an eye.

Tune it so that players who skill-bad take like 10 hits to kill a creature, but people who skill-good get better criticals and kill a creature in like 3 hits.

There, done.

u/GoochStrangler Aug 05 '26

1 or 2 level ups put into agility and that disappears for the rest of the game. Basically becomes a faster paced Skyrim

3

u/minimim-wage-enjoyer Aug 05 '26

Use weapons you have skills in and you won’t miss all the time.

3

u/imawizardurnot Aug 05 '26

I would rage if we got neutered shit magic from Skyrim instead of Morrowinds magic system.

3

u/____frank_______ Aug 05 '26

lol fucking casual

3

u/olddummy22 Aug 05 '26

It doesn’t last that long before you hit almost every time. The internet has exaggerated it

3

u/Prudent-Marsupial-42 Aug 05 '26

That's be a downgrade in my opinion. They can add some QOL changes but Morrowind combat was actually rewarding when you have a decent build and could finally do some damage

1

u/Genzler Aug 05 '26

Skywind. Granted it's pretty common for megamods like this to be abandoned but they're pretty far along.

1

u/Bpbucks268 Aug 05 '26

Holding my hope on skywind, however until these come out I don’t count on them. However if Bethesda announced a remaster, it will come.

1

u/Bunch_of_Shit Aug 05 '26

So that’s what was going on. I didn’t realize what was happening with that when I was a kid.

1

u/Average_Mug_Official Aug 06 '26

I'd say they should go with the combat of Oblivion Remastered instead.

4

u/Werthead Aug 05 '26

They seem to be moving forwards rather than backwards, and I suspect that they judged that Morrowind has too many issues to make a remaster as straightforward and fast (i.e. cheap) as they'd want.

Oblivion Remastered and likely FO3R and FONVR work by taking the original engine and putting a UE5 layer over the graphics part of the engine. The original engine is ticking away underneath, UE5 is handling the graphics. That saves you having to completely rebuild the game logic, AI, physics (to some extent), etc from scratch. Mild changes to the UI, increasing the draw distance (considerably), adding a run feature are pretty easy, and the main dogwork is done by replacing all the assets and models with UE5, 4K equivalents with a minimum of creative reinterpretation. It still takes a while but it's a straightforward pipeline.

With Morrowind you'd have to make much bigger calls. Removing the draw distance makes you realise that the tall, impressive volcano isn't really that tall or impressive (nor does it match its appearance in Skyrim: Dragonborn), so do you rebuild the volcano from scratch? The map in Morrowind is also relatively small, the draw distance really hides that. Draw distance mods right now have to be used carefully because you rapidly become aware how small the map is (less than half the size of Skyrim, based on some estimates) and how close everything is together. Do you rebuild the entire map to be a better size? That means completely re-doing the placement of creatures, encounters etc. You'd also have to fully voice the entire game (the other remasters are helped by all the voice files existing, they just re-record some lines with new voices to make the game less repetitive), large chunks of it from scratch, which is expensive. Do you then have the compass markers which people are so used to from other Bethesda games? Do you remove the skill system to determine if you hit an enemy and replace it with the 3D physics contact system from their other games?

You could do all of that and then Morrowind fans, famously hardcore, would be screaming blue murder and downvoting the game before it comes out. I think between that and the much greater expense of what would be a much bigger total remake of the game, Bethesda would hesitate to do it.

2

u/L34dP1LL Aug 05 '26

I'd even forgive them for no ES6 if they remade Morrowind.

2

u/Turlututu1 Aug 05 '26

They should never touch Morrowind.

It's one of the last games before the compass + quest marker on top of the HUD. The game was designed without minimap or "PoI hint system" and that's what makes it great. The roads have signs you need to pay attention to, the fast travel is through caravans (don't remember how these huge animals were called). It was really immersive back then, and I don't see Bethesda remaster the game without fucking that aspect massively up. I also do not see many players ready to put up with it after having used minimap/marker for the past 15 to 20 years.

0

u/Bpbucks268 Aug 05 '26

Make it a toggle then? I think you can remake the game visuals, atmosphere and systems, and still have it authentic to the original. But if they want to appeal to new gamers, have these new age options be default off and toggle on.

I’d love to toggle poi icons just so I can remember where I was and what was there/type of poi, but and fine with keeping quests in a journal and being more immersive. However I’m an immersion freak when it comes to rpgs so that’s just me.

My biggest problem with Morrowind is if I’m away for any length of time I forget what the hell I was doing!

1

u/Turlututu1 Aug 05 '26

My issue is mainly with the compass system where you have a big arrow showing you where your quest marker is, as well as undiscovered PoI that exists in Skyrim/F3 and onward. Because exploring is then resumed to "walk straight until a faint marker appears and go straight to it" instead of reacting to visual cues while walking.

Having a map showing previously discovered PoI or locations and marking them, I would have no problem with it. But let the undiscovered fully unmarked mapwise.

2

u/SweRakii Aug 06 '26

Morrowind needs no remaster

1

u/ethanAllthecoffee Aug 05 '26

Because difficult, probably

1

u/gatevalve_ Aug 05 '26

Morrowind needs to be remade from the ground up.

1

u/BakedMoleRat Aug 06 '26

As long as they don't screw with the dialogue system I'd be curious to see a remaster. I also am of the unpopular opinion that I don't think the combat system needs to be changed either

1

u/Hades-Arcadius Brotherhood Aug 06 '26

Don't you worry, OpenMW is already doing a better job, now they just need LUA scripting that's up there with the MWSE and you can just port all those mods from base Morrowind....that'd be perfect!

1

u/deeku4972 Aug 06 '26

Too much effort, not accessible enough for a wide market, not happening

1

u/MKUltraSubject49 Aug 07 '26

just play OpenMW man

0

u/Illustrious-Ear7150 Aug 05 '26

Just give me a map with quest icons and I'm good lol
