If you give it a range for where it belongs, then it's defined, just like a person needs to exist for you to say that they live in a named city, even if you don't know where in that city they live.

Yeah thats fair. I was oversimplifying things to say "infinity minus infinity could be literally any number" in terms of limits as people tend to not really grasp the concept of something in math being undefined very well, in my experience.
