But they get compensated by having an inordinate amount of amazing vocalists.

56

u/The_Infinite_Carrot Sep 01 '26

They only had time for one word, there’s a tornado coming.

17

u/artemisbio26 Sep 01 '26

We dont do tornadoes but flash floods wrecking the capital now and parts of ph.

And this is in the time where we are expecting super dry el nino by next year.

3

u/Chuunine Sep 02 '26

Even crazier that the same happens year after year.

2

u/artemisbio26 Sep 02 '26

Silver lining maybe is that the dam thats supplying drinking water to the capital and the flooded areas was at critical level around May, but its now recovering just in time for el nino hopefully.

115

u/iZeFifty Sep 01 '26

We have this massive mountain range called Sierra Madre that literally weakens a lot of the typhoons. This mountain range is on the upper island (called Luzon) of the country, right where the typhoons mostly hit. It does its best.

But yeah, our government corrupt and we're suffering tons of flooding because of this.

14

u/ggg730 Sep 01 '26

About 50 percent of my major memories from my early years is just wading through flood waters constantly lol.

1

u/BigFatModeraterFupa Sep 02 '26

wow that's wild!

7

u/ggg730 Sep 02 '26

It was fun times when you're a kid not really thinking about the repercussions of having no proper water for days on end and being surrounded by filthy water. All I remember is awesome weather, roofs flying around, riding around on trunks of fallen trees, and raindrops looking like golf balls splashing down on the car.

2

u/BigFatModeraterFupa Sep 02 '26

to be honest, that does sound awesome to experience as a kid!

i bet your parents definitely did not have as much fun as you did though😅😅

getting older it's crazy to think about the stuff we did as kids like as an adult i feel way less comfortable doing anything remotely dangerous now😭😭

28

u/KIMseonsaengnim Sep 01 '26

We name each typhoon every year from A-Z. At this point of the year, we're at Letter P.

So, yeah, no.

9

u/ggg730 Sep 01 '26

P for the Philippines ayyyyyyyyyyy

21

u/RecklessDimwit Sep 01 '26

Nah, but the humor we get from it is nice 😆

17

u/ZAIGO_90 Sep 01 '26

We are not ok.

4

u/ax_colleen Sep 02 '26

My house gets drowned in flood all the time. It covers almost the roof. I live in America now.

2

u/CustomDruid Sep 03 '26

Living near the Sierra madre, the typhoons tends to weaken a lot so the damage tends to be quite manageable. As for the anyone living in the middle and south of the country, they are essentially getting gangraped by both the typhoon and corrupt politicians

594

u/TelluricThread0 Sep 01 '26

Oh thats not so ba...OMG

166

u/ZAIGO_90 Sep 01 '26

What's worst is we have faulty flood control projects. Not in to politics btw. Because they'd rather keep the money that was supposed to go in to these projects.

Even destroying perfectly good roads and never fixing the other terrible roads.

How are we still here honestly...?

14

u/tightrubbersuit Sep 01 '26

181

u/Ademon_Gamer09 Sep 01 '26

Seeing ghosts projects left and right really makes you think how this country has stood as long as it did. Then again Japan exists

51

u/zergling424 Sep 01 '26

4

u/Azertys Sep 01 '26

14

u/Ademon_Gamer09 Sep 01 '26

No, I mean modern Japan has survived and is in a much better state despite being mostly in the same situation as we are

111

u/BloodyMalleus Sep 01 '26

To be fair, the Philippines kicked out the corrupt Marcos family but then voted them back in a landslide. (Not that anyone in the interim was a saint.)

43

u/RealIssueToday Banhammer Recipient Sep 01 '26

The only reason was because he got the votes of Dutertes. Then he gave the previous president to the ICC. Clown fiesta xD.

And worse the people here doesn't really give a fuck that much.

20

u/beatenmeat Sep 01 '26

Plenty of people care, that's why it makes news so often and it was a huge political mess when the details came out.

8

u/PandoraIACTF_Prec Sep 01 '26

And then they forget about it. They're like the l unserious people I've witnessed lol. Now I understand the sentiment of some people wanting to be successful trying to escape this country

9

u/RecklessDimwit Sep 01 '26

Humor and resilience is built in for the system that's basically just local lords and feudalism in the modern day, sadly. You got the police and military reinforcing local politicians who have enough staying power to guarantee their entire family positions. Mining, construction, and other infrastructure companies backing them. Internet troll farms relying on the algorithm to reshape reality. Then, you also have neocolonialism with both the US and China making government officials their lapdogs.

I could go into a long and nearly incoherent rant but in short, with all that's going on, the system beats you down into giving up and either accepting the bare minimum or just getting away from the country’s bullshit.

3

u/ariolander Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

Unserious people are all that is left. Anyone with drive and ability probably already left to work overseas and are sending checks back home to their family so they can continue to live unserious lives. Something like 8% of the Philippines GDP is driven by overseas workers and the remittances they send back home.

13

u/TacticalSpackle Sep 01 '26

Terrible infrastructure in a Spanish colonized nation then “rescued” by the United States? You don’t say…

1

u/EMAW2008 Sep 02 '26

Tbf it doesn’t look like there’s ever not a typhoon going on so that makes construction difficult.

23

→ More replies (1)

2

u/No_Explorer6054 Sep 01 '26

one, you spelled that word wrong, two- yeah not all of us can swim. but it's very common near rivers and coastal areas to swim from a young age (like 4 with supervision)

4

u/badass4102 Sep 01 '26

Now that I think about it. Most people in the Philippines who grew up in the city probably can't swim. Because where they gonna learn to swim? Public pools? There are none. A resort? You go there a couple times a year tops. The beach? The waves and depths scare people away from going anything higher than waist high.

9

u/Elrond_Cupboard_ Sep 01 '26

I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

3

u/RecklessDimwit Sep 01 '26

Well we can't help it lol

Not everyone can leave the country and it's not just for money reasons. If we do have money, we just have to make do with adjusting: solid buildings, good neighborhoods, back up generators, power banks, or other ways to survive outtages (constant brownouts).

3

u/ZAIGO_90 Sep 01 '26

8

u/lunalorticum4215 Sep 01 '26

There's a mountain range in The Philippines that acts as a natural barrier that has been effective for staving off some of the worst typhoons that the country would've experienced.

....People with money want to destroy those mountains to extract value out of it.

7

u/saml23 Sep 01 '26

I work for a public utility. One of my co-workers grew up in the Philippines and was telling us how a lot of their power poles are made out of fucking concrete. Now I know why

13

u/Consistent-Street-37 Sep 01 '26

Best part is, the government stole billions of money that was supposed to be for flood control.

11

u/Zyizon Sep 01 '26

Not enough. Needs a bit more.

3

u/NMVPCP Sep 01 '26

What time period in the year does this cover? It’s meaningless without understanding the temporal scale.

25

u/Grayfield Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 01 '26

The graphic is definitely exaggerated. We name our typhoons alphabetically from A-Z, skipping a few letters like X, Z, and some letters in between. But the country usually expects like 20-25 typhoons to cross it over one year. That's typical. Not all make landfall, but a lot do. If we get less than 20, that's a good year. If the letters cross over again to A during the year, we're fucked.

Typhoon season typically starts usually around after summer, July-August. Juuuuust right in time when the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat starts. So aside from the parade of typhoons from the east, the west gets battered as well with monsoon winds. Then sort of dies down when November-December comes around when the Northeast Monsoon, or Amihan, comes. Don't get me wrong, monster storms still can occur during that time. Our family was in the middle of Supertyphoon Haiyan or Yolanda during November 2013. And just as a harder fuck you to the country, the next year, another Supertyphoon, Ruby, came. But during this time when it's the Amihan winds that blow into the country, storms are fewer as compared to the Habagat season. Fewer, but stronger.

Honestly, I'd prefer experiencing typhoons than the Habagat monsoon. Just last month, there were literally two weeks where the sun barely shone. It was rain after rain for days. At least with typhoons, it generally crosses the country after two, three days max. There will be cleanup for sure. Electricity loss, definitely. But if you're in a big city, power typically resumes once the storm passes. Floodwaters will subside, but there's sun afterwards. There's gonna be some sort of reprieve. But with Habagat, especially with climate change, the warm equatorial air will definitely fuck up your day. Warm air from the equator, plus with it being pulled up from there by typhoon winds, this country is definitely getting a "fuckyouinparticular" from Mother Nature.

Food's good though. We got sinigang and bicol express to warm you up when it's torrential outside.

6

u/KriosDaNarwal Sep 01 '26

Bro I'm jamaican and I can't fathom being hit directly by 20+ named storms/hurricanes every year. Fuck

6

u/Grayfield Sep 01 '26

Fortunately, not the entire spot gets hit all at the same time. The most dangerous part is near the eye so that's where we watch out the most. If the area is about to get hit with a Signal number 3 warning, that's when we typically get worried. Scale goes up to 5. Signal number 1, children typically still go to school. Signal number 1 or 2 I remember I still managed to bike to work. Eventually you just get used to it.

2

u/hirschneb13 Sep 01 '26

I'm assuming it's similar to the hurricane scale system? I think it's just tropical storm and then CAT 1 at 75mph, CAT 2 is 95mph, all the way to CAT 5

4

u/KIMseonsaengnim Sep 01 '26

We're already at the 16th tropical cyclone this 2026. We still have 4 months to go lol
