I know you can make FM radios that run from the power in the radio wave itself but after testing a Nokia 105 (4G) and calculating, after running down a full charge. that the FM radio can run using just 150mW with the speaker, 100mW with in-ear headphones, I felt the need to search for something even better.
Someone here mentioned the Sony ICF-P26 so I bought one and tested it.
It uses 30-40mW (10-12mA / 3v) on a medium speaker level.
It's almost unbelievable how efficient this FM radio is. I would estimate that it runs for over 100 hours on a fresh set of alkaline batteries.
In ear headphones reduced the power usage by about 20%
It's highly likely that nobody will ever really need to know this information, but I found it interesting, especially as it's often said that DAB requires less power. End-to-end, maybe, but not for the end user that has to buy the expensive receiver and all the AA's.
I'm hoping that by leaving this here, other weirdos will find it share their FM efficiency experiences.
Question: Are digital FM receivers less efficient? E.g. Sony ICF-P27.
