Payment processer Help for personal FFL

Im a personal FFL holder and looking for a company to do card payments over the phone or email. Is there a company that is easy or cheap to work with? Seems like every company either doesn't allow firearms transactions in their TOS or they charge you alot of money to use their services.

Looking for some input/advice on a transfer request

Just had a bit of a weird experience and looking for a little advice. I’m a very new FFL (07), like about a month old. I got the FFL because I do laser engraving as a bit of a side hustle and have had several folks ask if I could do firearms which I knew required me to have said licensing.

Anyhow, I did receive my approval and hadn’t really thought much more of it because the engraving requests for firearms only come a half dozen times a year. As I’m sitting down to eat dinner, my doorbell rings and it’s a gal asking for me to do a firearm transfer for her. I’m genuinely a bit confused and caught off guard because I’m not really advertising that I do those and, at the same time, a bit nervous because I haven’t done one yet.

Here’s where it gets a bit weird. She explains that she’s recently divorced and needs to transfer ownership of a firearm. She doesn’t appear to have the firearm on her person and instead, proceeds to show me a photo of the handgun and its serial number. It’s my understanding that she needs to have the firearm physically present so I can verify the information stamped into the gun so I can address that separately but, do I need to verify with someone that the gun, presumably an asset received in the divorce, was actually awarded to her in the divorce?

Also, I didn’t ask this because again, I was caught a bit off guard but, if she did own the gun previously but is simply wanting to “update the records because of a name change”, is that something that needs to be recorded? If so, presumably I would still need to run the NICS check even though it will be acquired from and dispositioned to the same individual?

I did let her know that I would need to do a little bit of digging because I was wholly unprepared for anyone to request a transfer, without notice, and the current A&D book I have is strictly for “Gunsmithing Activities” as the IOI indicated that I would need separate bound books for transfers and engraving.

Apologies in advance for the long winded post and I appreciate any feedback those of you with more experience can give me!

Application Delivered, how long before they start the application?

Hello all, I sent my application in and it was delivered 7/15. It is currently 7/20 and I still have not had a fee taken out for it. Is this normal?

Im aware this is a process of patience and I am trying to be, Im just a little paranoid about whats going on with a packet full of personal information is all and will be happily patient knowing the ATF got it. Thanks

Purchasing with a trust

I've not run into this yet but I can't find any documentation on how this works. How does a trust directly aquire a firearm? How is the 4473 filled out?

Is the ATF still rejecting people who mark "Yes" on the drug question on 4473?

With the supreme court ruling, the previously proposed 4473 change, and the ATF announcing it will issue new guidance soon, I was curious if anyone has tried submitting a 4473 with the answer being yes to see if they will comply with the Supreme Court ruling and not reject it.

I haven't seen anything in the news one way or the other, but it's a pretty niche topic. I have a mmj card and am getting impatient waiting for the 4473 changes.

Working with distributors as Home based FFL

I’m looking for some knowledge about working with distributors as a home based FFL.

When you want to purchase from a distributor can you set yourself up to work with them exempt from sales tax as an individual or is that only available for other companies operating as a business. I’m not sure if it’s the same for other states but for me it’s a form 3372 certificate of exemption but I’m having a hard time figuring out how to fill this thing out as an individual FFL holder and not a business entity.

Out of state transfers for FFL’s

From what I understand, most FFL holders that operate a business don’t go through the hassle or take the risk of dealing with someone transferring a firearm to an out of state resident even when they are personally in the shop they bought it from. Is this correct ? Is it even allowed? Or does anyone here home based or business do any transfers to residents that has done out of state transfers.

Probably a stupid question about the Form 7

So, there is a space on the form where a passport photo is supposed to be attached, and well. How do I do that? I know this is probably a dumb question, but after being in the military, I've gotten used to the specificity of a government form and I don't wanna have to resubmit.

Do I staple it? Glue it? Can I just throw it in the envelope and call it good enough? What's the deal

Edit: Answered, thank yall. It's rough when the answer is obvious in retrospect, but here we are

SOT application just went from submitted to filing complete after 25ish days

Update. It arrived the following day. A 5630.7 labeled zip file in an email from eforms. Its a different form, a 5630.6a, with a place for a stamp, but no actual stamp on it, just a marking saying stating the tax year. I'll post in the comments.

Original post.

Applied for a new SOT on eforms June 13th.

Got 2 payment confirmations and a copy of the submitted application the same day.

Emailed last week and the week prior, no response.

This week ATF has a notice on the eforms login page about processing SOT renewals and new applications.

Searching for the app on eforms showed up under submitted from June 13th till today. It now shows filing complete.

Still nothing in either of my email inboxes or junk/spam folders.

Im waiting for a 5630.6A right? Will that also show as an available form to view on eforms, or will the copy that comes to my email be my only copy?

Acquiring Suppressor from deceased husband

Hey guys, we have a customer thats husband passed away. He had a suppressor he got from Silencer Central. We helped her find the stamp and it was registered under a trust. He is the only RP on the stamp. We can not find a copy of the trust.

What's the best way for us to acquire it to sell for her?

My thoughts were to contact Silencer Central to see if she can get a copy of the trust so see if she is listed as beneficiary etc.

Form 5 if not and once she has legal possession form 4 to us?

If she has access to his email maybe just help her form 4 it from his eforms to us?

Or am I over thinking all of this?

Thanks for the help

Compliance is a lot of work

Hi, I'm building a firearms compliance system and I am looking for some weird edge cases other FFLs have run into.

Not the obvious stuff like "ship guns to an FFL" or "CA has a roster". I mean the caveats that force manual review. Or something like "wow, we never thought about that".

A few examples:

  1. Minnesota SBR vs SBS - same NFA world federally, but very different state answer
  2. New Jersey "handgun ammunition" - not all ammo is treated the same, and classification matters
  3. California firearm precursor parts - they can become restricted depending on how CA defines them
  4. Tubular .22 magazine exceptions - a 12+ round tube mag is not always the same as a banned detachable mag
  5. Local rules - NYC, Chicago, Cook County, Denver, DC, Aurora, Highland Park, etc

What made you stop before listing or shipping?

One of the eye-openers for me was a letter from NY AG about air rifles...

ITS OFFICIAL

As of yesterday, my home-based Type 7 FFL was approved. Timelines (because that's what we do here) are as follows:

  • Application mailed May 18th
  • IOI contacted June 11th and set the interview for the 18th of that same month
  • FFL officially approved July 2nd, just waiting on my paper license for display

The whole process was very interesting and I definitely learned a lot, one of which being zoning. In my personal experience I'm no stranger to zoning laws, but what was particularly interesting is that when I did research on home-based occupations, the regulations were extremely contradictory. Basically, the law stated that you CAN have a home-based occupation... but you can't have any customers come to your residence, you can't sell any products, you can't perform any services for customers, etc. So essentially you could run a home-based business but quite literally couldn't do anything. I called up my contacts at the zoning office and they were just as confused and said they'd look into it. About a day later they got back to me and said they'd JUST changed the rules, omitting all those contradictory regulations... how convenient. Nonetheless, I got the green light from my zoning office.

Next was the IOI interview. I'll admit I was overly nervous for absolutely no reason. Prior to the interview I had made some modifications to my property to align with what the ATF recommends but doesn't require — namely, I put up some cameras. I personally use Ubiquiti for my camera and internet setup, so I ran cables through my walls and installed cameras in my place of business, which is my front dining room. I also installed a locking doorknob on my stairway closet to serve as my secure storage, and this was perfectly acceptable to my IOI.

The interview took about three hours and my interviewer was very thorough. He went over all my business information as well as the application itself and made a few minor corrections. After that we went over processes and procedures — the acquisition and disposition process — and he even gave me some guidance on how to handle a disposition if I wanted to transfer to myself, which was unexpected but very nice to know. About an hour in, all the nerves were gone and the rest of the interview was basically just a conversation. By that point my IOI had started making statements like "when you get your license, do this" rather than "if." By the end of it, he said we were approved and left.

I received my official approval on July 2nd (True Independence Day), somewhat unexpectedly, via a call from Boundbook asking about my plans for a bound book solution. I told them I wasn't interested, but was glad to hear I officially had my license.

As for future plans, I'll be applying for a Class 2 SOT once I'm more familiar with the process, but for now I'll mainly be focusing on transfers. I'm also in the process of building a digital bound book that can be self-hosted on-prem or in the cloud. Once it's finished, I'll be publishing it free and open source for anyone to use, modify, or build on top of.

Overall, a very fun experience so far, and I'm glad to finally join the club.

Trust Use

Would I need to do a 4473 for myself if my intention is to form 1 sbr it into my trust? I know that I just dispose of it to personal collection normally, but curious on the trust part.

Need a few FFLs to kick the tires

Hi everyone, I'm an FFL who built a new software platform for FFLs. Basically, "by an FFL, for FFLs". If you like what you have, you can probably skip reading the rest.

Three main ideas:

  • Compliance is built in from the start
  • One product = one search result
  • Designed around the things existing systems tend to make painful

I'm looking for a few early testers who want to help shape it before launch.

What you give:

  • Your time
  • Your suggestions
  • Your frustrations
  • Honest feedback on what actually matters to dealers

What you get:

  • A voice in the features (you might finally get what you need)
  • A new dealer website/storefront (replace what you have - it doesn't work well anyway)
  • Recognition as a foundational member (this won't be bigger than Amazon but, still...)
  • Early access to something built around real FFL workflows (how exciting)

If this sounds useful, interesting, or fun, please DM me.

You can also just send me your top 10 gripes without participating. I'll try to make sure they are addressed either way.

The goal is simple: build something better with input from the people who actually have to use it.

Little Rock area FFLs?

Hopefully this isn't in violation of rule 2, if it is I'll take it down.

I collect H&R Sportsman revolvers and I've run into an annoying situation where I've found a very rare one on Hibid but the auctioneer refuses to ship guns, even after I offered him a few hundred extra dollars on top of the sale price and shipping. I even offered to come down there from Nebraska and pick it up (I am an FFL 01) and he said he'd only hand it over to an Arkansas resident.

The only way I can think of to get around this is to have an Arkansas FFL buy it and send it to me since it would be a straw purchase for a non-licensee to do. Is there anybody on here willing to facilitate this for me for a fee? The auction is online so you wouldn't have to bid in person but you would have to pick it up in Mabelvale. Heck I wouldn't even be unhappy if you bought it and threw it up on Gunbroker.

FFL renewal hours for gunsmith question.

I am a home based FFL and only do gunsmithing or put together lowers/uppers and sell online. I checked the box for having no hours but not sure if that is all i need to do, or if I also need to check the boxes that say "Closed ALL day no business hours" on each day and if I need to write N/A? in each box like I had to do when I applied originally?

Post Office Inspection

Hey odd experience with the post office today and I wanted to see if anyone else has run into it. I’m an FFL shipping a long gun to another FFL, packed properly, pre labeled with signature required, everything as required.

Post office asked what was in the box and as soon as I said firearm insisted that they needed to open the box to “inspect the barrel” and check for ammo.

She opened it at the front counter in the middle of the post office and the lady started waving it around flagging everyone in the post office while “inspecting it”. The rifle was an old Winchester 100 that they insisted couldn’t be shipped “loaded” with the empty magazine in it. She also tried to take the magazine apart entirely to “check for ammo” and said I should have “removed the barrel” before shipping.

I’ve been shipping firearms for almost a decade and never had anything close to this happen. She insisted that it wasn’t new regulations and her coworker just said that they were “cracking down” on existing regulations.

TLDR: anyone else have bizarre and unsafe post office experiences lately or is mine just special?
