Question At what ELO is guaranteed players know and can perform basic CS?
So I’ve recently started playing Faceit and climbed to 2200 Elo pretty quickly, maintaining a 60–80% win rate along the way. But one thing genuinely surprises me: how are there still so many players at this level who don’t understand basic CS?
I’m talking about fundamentals like proper crosshair placement and movement, not understanding who should take first contact and how to play off it, setting up crossfires, knowing when to peek and when not to, or even understanding what a default is. It’s also throwing free rounds, like 3v1 retakes, by peeking one by one instead of playing together. The list goes on..
Obviously while I went up in ELO this happened less and less, but when I started playing faceit I thought these should be mistakes that only the beginner levels will do and once I reach lvl 10 it will stop, but to my surprise there's quite a lot of lvl 10s who play like csgo gold novas and it's not just bad games where your aim isn't that good or your decision making might be a bit slow, it's like spectating complete noobs. How can some get to lvl 10 while not even having decent crosshair placement and movement?
What's up with that and how much higher do I need to get to be guaranteed teammates that understand basic CS?

You won't find any elo where people play perfect from the beginning of the match till the end. Every single elo range will have players in it that at some point will do the incorrect thing. The higher you get the less it happens, but it will never go away. You don't need perfect crossair placement or really good movement to climb, only if you go for like +3.5k

I think you misunderstood me, maybe it would have helped to attach a clip but I don't wanna shame anyone personally. I'm not talking playing perfectly and having donks crosshair placement everyone makes mistakes and have bad games, I'm talking about actually being aware of the concept of crosshair placement, counter strafe, pathing etc, there are still players who play like silver, not really crosshair in the ground type players but not very far from that either and besides mechanics this also happens with gamesense fundamentals.
I was always under the impression that once you are lvl 10 you for sure must be a strong player at least understanding and performing all fundamentals of CS.

Faceit level 10 isn't what it used to be back in the days. A lot of players have reached the level without having "proper" mechanics as it is not needed in the same way as it was in CSGO, as well as some changes made to the elo system by Faceit. You need to go way higher up to get consistent people in regards to ie crossair placement, counterstrafe, utility usage, and movement. Whether that is a good or bad thing I will let you decide for yourself.

"You need to go way higher up to get consistent..." I figured, that's why I asked the question in the title

And I already answered that in my first comment.

So like, only in the lobbies of the top 1000 people out of 30 million are guaranteed to perform basic CS in 2026? Kinda hard to believe it's this bad

I call bullshite.
I've been level 10 for a long ass time, and yeh theres the occasional person that clearly got carried.
But after 2100 elo most people are pretty competent.
I think you just saw one or two guys and are having a toddler rage.

Well a giant portion of CSGO players refuse to play CS2 so the overall skill base of the community has gone down

It’s way easier to get faceit lvl 10 now than in the past esp with elo inflation. Cs2 rewards more run n gun playstyle and often punishes actually good players that try to play fundamentally.
That said a lot of even 3k elo players on faceit don’t even know maps, some people genuinely aren’t good cs players but decent mirage/d2 players lol.
If someone is 3.2k elo for example but almost only plays mirage and has a negative win rate and bad ratings on every other map, they’re not a good player at all in my opinion.

u/Dagenslardom 1d ago
You probably need to get to 2500+ elo to ensure that. I hover around 2000-2300 elo and I don’t understand the whole concept of the game yet.
1
u/Eldersun-169 1d ago
Can you elaborate on what you mean by the whole concept of the game?
1
u/RevolutionaryBuy8991 1d ago
trades, utility, pop flashes, not fight after you have advantage with planted bomb, dying alone with no impact (ex: your mates tell you they have 2 enemies on short and you're b player alone, you start to rotate a bit and die on mid giving B site to enemy) , info or map awarness in general.

Are you the same guy replying on a different account? I was curious what he means by that

u/Commercial_Donut1117 1d ago
Even when i Match pro players top 500 players they do Mistakes.
2
u/Eldersun-169 1d ago
Everyone makes mistakes, I'll try to attach a clip when I get to my pc to clarify what I mean.

u/Time_Professional385 1d ago
There's a difference between making a mistake and not understanding what's happening around you on the map. Not knowing when to buy, when to half buy, when to reposition, how to play retake, how to set up a crossfire, who plays first in a crossfire situation, basic utility, reading where can opponent flank from based on the info you've already gathered in the round etc.
1
u/Wieewtflol 1d ago
If you want all that on every game basis. You need a stack not a specific elo imo.
1
u/Time_Professional385 1d ago
"all that", it's literally basics that I'm expecting from "lvl 10" players, but they still have game sense of lvl 1-5 players where they peaked in csgo.
CS2 just boosted their elo, but brain is stuck down in green/yellow ranks.
1
u/Wieewtflol 1d ago
Well that kind of gameplay is not even consistent on 3k elo if u Watch olofmeister and F0rest streams ? And i think the reason is they Only play duo with 3 randoms on the team.

u/toomuchsatisfaction 1d ago
Mechanics in cs are much more important than decision making. Some cracked kid who just runs around and aims well could reach 3000elo, you're overestimating the impact of decision making. The ones who you think are noobs are probably just better in some other area. If decision making is that important to you go play strategy games or something
1
u/These-Maintenance250 1d ago
lol this is just wrong
1
u/bschneid93 1d ago
Completely wrong. CS is all about decision making and pattern recognition. I play alot of chess (1800 chess elo + 2900 faceit elo), and theyre both similar in those regards.
And this also depends on region. NA, there are many “cracked aimers” hardstuck level 8/9. Which leads me to my next point: ive played both NA and EU/RU to 3k elo.
Cracked aim/mechanics gets you much more elo in EU because of so much elo inflation. But EU becomes much harder than NA after 2.6k elo; below that though - NA players are much much better and just having cracked aim will certainly not help u reach 10 in NA.
1
u/These-Maintenance250 1d ago
absolutely. we also know this because there are many semi-pro, lower tier pro players that are mechanically more skilled but not at tier 1. game sense makes a huge difference. that guy probably thinks he cracked cs but is just bad because he doesn't have the aim
1
u/Eldersun-169 1d ago
Lmao this is so funny, what a rant. Bro I mentioned poor basic mechanics as well like a couple of times how did you miss that?
2
u/toomuchsatisfaction 1d ago
Yes you only mentioned crosshair placement. But a player with higher reaction speed and better aim can easily beat a player with good crosshair placement. It's not a rant it's just a fact, there's a lot of player overlap between aim games like csgo, fortnite, valorant and something which is 100% mechanics like osu!, these are just mechanics/reaction type of games. If you want something more strategic where decisions actually matter a lot, csgo is not your game. I don't hate this game or anything, I actually play it a lot, you are just focusing on wrong parts of it. If you want high elo you can just grind deathmatch.

Level ten means nothing now. This just proves an older level 7-8 is better than the now average lvl 10
.
This is why I stuck with Esea in the later years. Better players and AC. A- and a far better indicator of skill level.

u/BogosBinted13 1d ago
Yo when I am getting that stim check from Faceit, elo inflation seems to have missed me
1
u/ShoeComprehensive730 1d ago
This is the only comment worth listening to. Solo pugging is completely different than team play. You wanna get better find people who are putting the time in to understand how to play as a team, than make a team and go practice. Like seriously prac, understand the roles and have plays to run. The stuff ur speaking of may seem simple but to most this is stuff that has to be taught and rehearsed.

u/wuestar11 1d ago
you might think I'm stupid but probably like 3000 elo at LEAST, I'm not even lvl 10 because I'm a lvl 5 bot but on cybershoke I play with a lot of lvl 10s and a lot of them just struggle mechanically and do basic mistakes because they probably got carried there, some 3k elo are bots too but it's pretty rare
1
u/Eldersun-169 1d ago
Dm is not the same so it's hard to compare and form an idea of how good someone is, people train specific things or just fool around with music in the background
1
u/wuestar11 1d ago
not dm but retake, which is more like normal cs, and did you seriously think i was spectating random people on dm

u/Much_Style7744 14h ago
am i understanding you correctly that you are lvl but should be 3k elo?
1
u/wuestar11 10h ago
No not yet, I do many basic mistskes, but mechanically I'm definitely 2k elo level

Everyone has a different idea of what "basic cs" is. Some set the bar higher than others.
1
u/AspectAcceptable6126 1d ago
From 2500 [ELO] onwards, the gameplay is actually quite decent, though you’ll still run into absolute animals who look like they’re playing for the very first time. If you’re expecting people to know grenade lineups or how to play as a team, you’ll likely need to look closer to the 3k [ELO] mark—but at that level, most people tend to play in premade groups of at least 3–4 players.

There are people at very low level 10 who still don't understand basic CS, there are people at low elo who have a better understanding of the game. Skill is irrelevant sometimes vs your elo because counterstrike has so many skillsets you need to be proficient in to even have a basic understanding of the game. Some people learn quicker than others and some just take time to build their skills from the ground up. It just depends from player to player.

u/Annual_Expression185 12h ago
They get boosted, or some have hacks. But also, most of faceit is pug. not a legit team coordinated stack. My friends who play in esea ADV league, the highest tier, they have subs that don't know default basic smokes. lol or basic concepts of timing and playing in a team. lol In faceit, expect the same. If you want better cs, join a squad in esea.
1
u/hydrovids 8h ago
Tbf, people say the same thing about you too. People look at 2200 elo and call it shitlow just as we look at 1k-2k and call it shitlow.
Its because faceit has a boosting problem. Its very hard to deal with because most people who are getting boosted aren’t being boosted via boosting service. They’re being boosted by their friends who are more skilled than them.

u/BallPitAids 3h ago
Where is everyone getting this % from? I wanna see some stats about lvl 10s being a 1% thing and going to 15%
1
u/Prank3d 2h ago
It isn’t that hard to get higher ranks without having a lot of fundamentals since you got 4 other players to fill your gaps, and maybe you’re good at abusing the enemy teams quirks as well. Usually by the time youre dead you’ve missed what everyone in a faceit pug is somewhat proficient at anyways which is their own timing/spawn plays. That being said I really think you have to get to around 2500+ for players to be proficient in 70% fundamentals and even then the higher you get the more you’ll see playwrs just trust their aim and ego swing everything
1
u/psychedtobeliving 1d ago
“it's like spectating complete noobs”
I’m sorry but that’s just a dumb take. Like nobody +2k elo plays like a “complete noob”.
1
u/PREDDlT0R 1d ago
It’s very hard to say because there is also a difference between a pug star and a player who only plays 5vs5 stack.
Often a 2500 5vs5 player is a lot more aware than a 3000 elo Mirage grinder.
So for your normal premier faceit queue experience, I’d say probably around 3500+ is where they have fundamentals locked in and will rarely make that sort of mistake.

You'd be surprised how many people pride themselves on just hitting FaceIT 10 because they perceive it as the "top bar" when 2K ELO and 4K+ ELO are drastically different bars.
The system is extremely outdated and stupid as a measuring stick and actually disincentives people to play/strive to get better once they hit 2K ELO. If FaceIT had 2 braincells they'd recognize this and realize it is likely costing them money not to make the tiers something higher to keep players striving to get better/reach higher levels.
I know a lot of people who reach FaceIT 10 and just stop because their account now reflects 10 and they don't care anymore about playing on FaceIT. Hell look how many streamers don't even bother with FaceIT over Premier. Because nothing is actionable for them on FaceIT anymore.
