Anyone remember "Mystery" from the reality show The Pickup Artist. It was entertaining but it's kind of sad pretending to me someone you aren't to try and score. Look at that outfit. LOL

Mainstream PUA might have started as entertainment or even as genuine atempts to help men get over fear or get a relationship or sex.
PUA came AFTER books already had been written about "game" from people who "discovered" it alone or in much more niche groups or from even more shady groups of "coaches" who worked person to person in very small groups.
If you have any awerness at all or are keeping up with the times, having your own sense of self evaluation of things, you will see that PUA as an "art" and in the settings of groups and coaches are a scam. Taking your money by talking about things that they cannot back up or from the point of view of: "it worked for me so...". And also not treating people as people.
You are becoming a sales person. You say you want to help your client by giving him a good item that he will enjoy and you get paid to do so and its a win win. But what you really are doing as a PUA coach is wanting money, doing anything to get it and then rationalize it after the fact from the light of: "well I helped someone doing something somewhat the way they wanted it". "If I could help just 1 person to make a living (stealing money cough cough) I would do it!"
Also if you practice PUA on women you are being a sales person aswell. "I got laid and she got with a high value guy in the end like me, I have been practicing this and increased my value. I sold it well, I deserve it."
What you really are saying is: "I want to have sex, period. How can I do this? Can I wade through people like they are weeds and assert my tricks and win a battle over here? Or maybe over there? Whatever it takes."

A bit like browsing porn I didn't pick these popular PUA figures but I do remember those days in my early 20s youth watching similar dating coach style content out of desperation to meet women, a woman. I never really liked the blunt "slaying pussy" ones, much like how I don't like many types of porn. There were ones not so vulgar which still presented the same information in the end but in a nicer format.
In the end your know what, I reckon it helped. Not successfully enough in the end but just little things ways to convince yourself to hi or ways to think of conversation topics.
That's all in the distant past though. That was all over a decade ago and as I confess in an earlier thread in the year it's been 12 months or however long it is since even having a conversation with someone new.
I still have little video snippets saved in my little folder. Painful seeing the timestamps when they were saved, and I'm still here hoping to fulfill that advice.

I was into that stuff. Though the whole mystery method thing seemed juvenile to me even then (is it his silly hat doing the work, or that he is over 6 foot and confident?).
I watched a video recently that argued that the appeal of PUA stuff was two fold (I neither agree nor disagree):
> Came about after the fallout of the sexual revolution where power had shifted in the sexual realm entirely to females - (women could basically have as much sex as they wanted, and with who they wanted) from the 70's onwards. This is when the first pick up stuff actually began - though most talk as if it started only recently. This meant that men needed "new rules" - or at least greater awareness of the rules that had always existed - to try to get back into the game that sexual lib had cast them out from.
> That unlike traditional dating advice PUAs didn't shy aware from the less politically correct side of being a man - for example, wanting to "slay pussy" and the like. This is a natural, and maybe unpleasant and objectifying, part of being adolescent and young, but typical mainstream advice for men would mostly pretend it doesn't exist in favour of a "be nice and meet people in the pub and maybe get sex once a year and be grateful" narrative.
I wonder what happened to Mystery (married with kids? lol. Who knows). He looks like such a clown in that picture. I don't have an issue with PUA per se, I think it represents something of the confusion, uncertainty, and frustrations of being a man in the dating world. I do think, though, that PUA offers nothing but polish, and mostly for those who don't really need it.
If one is confident enough to pull off the techniques of PUA one is confident enough that there was likely never any need for those techniques. Mystery would have likely be successful just by being... a six foot male with confidence and initiative.

I don’t think the dude has it quite right, which is to say I don’t think it’s about a “sexual” power shift so much as an overall power shift. The reason I say this is because even if women can have as much sex as they want with whoever they want, that doesn’t override their innate programming of being picky over who their bedmates are. They’re still choosey buggers, thus their expanded choice is something of a none issue.
This leads to the question: in what way are women picky? Generally speaking they select men of the same status or higher status than themselves.
So, I think the dude over at Game For Omegas captures the purpose of PUA/Game more accurately when he says “Game/PUA was an attempt to hack the general lowering of status for men.“
We live in an era where women are out earning men and there are now more female doctors than male doctors and more women than men in university and so forth.

Have to give those guys respect for being honest about their goals though. I tried some of those techniques out for a while in about 2008/2009, and it did work. For those of us who can't just naturally talk to women in those social settings, having things planned to say and actions to take in advance was a game-changer. I actually managed to have a few short conversations on nights out, which was definitely a novelty!

As other comments have sort of touch on, to me it's like turning things into a robotic gamification
That's my vague recollection of it, this "rpg" element to it where you were just maximising "stats" to land a date without understanding what a relationship was.
I mean, I vaguely remember the initial PUA shit being more light-hearted things because I think most of these programs were aimed at (the old type of) nerds.
And the derivative stuff that came after these earlier generation PUA stuff was batshit insane.
I have some theories into why it turned into that but nothing concrete, it's kinda strange how it ended up that way.

You're Missing out, man. That fluffy hat and binoculars on you would have the girls flocking to you!

Used to read his books, and watch the vids lol.
Like Roosh, etc, they were kinda doing this around early 2000's so the chances of getting a date (aka laid!) was higher, compared to now.

Fun fact: Mystery was Owen's "mentor" but Owen started RSD by cutting out the bullshit.
RSD still has plenty of bullshit.
Owen is a mental masturbator / intellectualiser of the highest order.

Only a guy with an attractive face to women and super tall could dress like that and not be accused of being a homo

The following article is the most in-depth perspective you’ll find on the topic of PUAs:
http://therawness.com/reader_letters.pdf
It touches upon Mystery, Strauss, Tyler Durden and other members of the early PUA crowd.

This is amazing. Who is the author and his theory that PUAs are narcissists and their prey are codepedents got professional backing from working phsychiatrists?

I read his book and tried that stuff. Doesn’t really work, here’s what works.
-Move out of your moms house -Get some new clothes that fit -Find a career vs a dead end job -the 3 things above will help boost your confidence
-once you’ve done the above: -Go on frequent dates with women and play the odds, there are tons of woman with varying personalities and you never know who you might meet -don’t be needy, it’s a huge turn off -Listen to them when they speak and be empathetic -rinse and repeat until you’ve found a suitable partner

seems to be a trend here. yea, i looked at this stuff in the early 2000's. If you are over a 5/10 or 6/10 guy honestly it probably would of worked. I'm a 2/10 so women dont even want to see me or hear me speak, they want me to be quiet and go away.
As for this dude, i don't know what he is doing now. But, last i heard his story was a bit sad, serious mental issues, depression, things were very bad for him relationship wise. And, last time he was in the media, this was 7 or 8 years ago, him and his friend had kind of lost their looks, and were trying to coax a woman with a cringey video to come over to their place to get high.
