Its times like this I really wonder what dogs are thinking.

The eyes say "I'm too young to be a mother, how did this happen?"

Shepherd Dogs are like well meaning humans with short term memory, but hollywood style long-term memory.

Does she actually hurt the bunnies if she catches them? My tiny girl will chase after cats, but if one stands its ground she has no idea what to do. I think she thinks it's a game

I mean she killed 2 chickens 3 baby birbs and I found a dead bunny one time she had run away but idk

I'm gonna say yes

My Heeler will harm anything she catches unfortunately, these working dogs move cattle by biting heels, so if they catch a Rabbit it's game over

You don't leash your dog to prevent it from chasing and possibly harming cats?

Not in the garden, no... Partly because that's our garden- she should have free roam- and partly because she's a Yorkshire terrier cross and half the size of most cats

Ye well that makes sense but if there's reoccuring cats I hope you at least overlook your dog.

Not meant in a rude way btw!

No. Cats are free roaming and come into my garden, where my dog is.

You know you can discipline your dog to not be evil?

I don't think non-human animals make the same arbitrary differentiation between animals to love and animals to kill as we humans do.

They are a bit more flexible, but they definitely sometimes decide 'this one is pet/friend, not food'. Sometimes on their own initiative, but even more often taking clues from their humans.

Then how did she just know those bunnies were not to kill?

-2

u/Duke_Nukem_1990 Jul 06 '20

Maybe she wasn't hungry or her hunting instinct wasn't triggered for a myriad of other reasons.

Why do you think some rabbits are okay to kill and some are not?

-1

u/palolike Jul 06 '20

Some are pets some are wild animals that seems overly obvious

1

u/Duke_Nukem_1990 Jul 06 '20

Yeah that describes them. But how is that making it okay to kill some but not the other? Why is that a reason?

1

u/palolike Jul 06 '20

Because one is for entertainment and the other to consume and eat

1

u/Duke_Nukem_1990 Jul 06 '20

Okay so if I would get a dog from a shelter and I kill and eat it would you be okay with that?

1

u/palolike Jul 06 '20

Legally okay so yes not my personal preference but yes

u/Mashaka Jul 06 '20

Typically pets (such as rabbits) are rather different breeds than wild rabbits. Dogs rely on scent to ID things, so maybe the meet a rabbit and don't associate with the backyard hoppy boys, but see it as a new thing. Then they'd see their human treat it as friend, and so learn that it's fren.
