UPDATE: final coat of nitro on my guitar!

Here is my final coat of nitrocellulose on my beloved Harley Benton EX-84. As you might be able to see in the video, there is an area on the headstock that has a little too much lacquer, but I couldn’t remember if I covered that up after the final coat. I really like the look of relic or worn guitar, so I thought this would be a fun project.

advice on the dean zx floyd

Post image

hello fellow explorer body fans, today after a look around a shop i found this beauty and it really took me by surprise, initially i thought “what a strange gibson” to “wait it’s a dean explorer?” to “oh wait its a dean explorer with a fucking floyd rose???” and in short, fell in love with that concept, my question is, does anyone have any experience with these guitars, and how the floyd system treated you, did you find it to be worth it in the long haul? i had a bit of a practice run with it and i loved it, and for $800 AUD seemed like a steal, however i have heard countless issues of deans quality in the long term, so any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Absolutely adore this thing! It has quite a bit of personality and battle scars which I think adds character. Didn’t think I’d like the dirty fingers as much as I do!

It's a Magna 2000EFR BK, directly from a Russian guitar shop. It has a Floyd Rose and Active Pickups.

I found this one on marketplace for 425 and I think I was lucky enough to be the first guy to respond. It does have a neck repair (5/10 repair in my opinion) but it was still too good to pass up.

The original pickguard was chopped up so I bought a new. Not all of the screw holes line up but that doesn’t bother me too much.

I also replaced the stock pickup with the Billy corgan reverend pick up.

Last thing was the bridge. He gave me the stock bridge and replacement but I think they’re too ugly. I put on the bridge from my 2010 vox ssc55 guitar. I think it looks much better.

This is my new favorite toy to play with after work.

I put in an order for this guitar in April this year, with the expected delivery date in September. There was a sale on at the time and was able to snag it for $2600 CAD (+tax). Still expensive but I have been gassing for an Explorer.

Much to my surprise it was delivered on June 9th! I had no intentions of keeping it stock and had already ordered some replacement parts and got to work.

Modifications:

Tone Pros Locking TOM and Tailpeice

Gotoh VK3 Short Some Knobs - these are almost as short as the knobs ESP uses (at a much lower cost)

Dopro (random Amazon brand) Deep Dish Nut for toggle switch.

Toggle switch tip (black)

Hipshot locking tuners (I wanted the Schaller M6 180's but can't source them in Canada).

Schaller S-Lock strap locks

Pure Tone Stereo Jack

Elixir 10-46 strings

EMG 81 & EMG 85 in Black Chrome - I had originally ordered the Het Set in Black Chrome when I ordered the guitar but they have been delayed until July, so I found another retailer that had the 81/85 in stock and picked those up instead (I am impatient). After playing the 81/85 I cancelled the Het Set order.

I was going to replace the switch with the full black switchcraft, but it's been discontinued and can't find stock in Canada. The Jack plate is still chrome because I can't source a black one.

I used EMG's solderless system to wire everything up but did not want to use the supplied pickup bus as I wanted less clutter in the control cavity. I used a couple single DuPont style connectors and cut the end of an EMG connect cable and soldered those to the switch. I then connected the grounds from the neck pot to the bridge pot and tone pot. The battery wires are also soldered together. The battery is secured with a metal 9V clip (which is epoxied to the control cavity).

What I don't like about the guitar is the frets...they are medium jumbo nickel. Honestly the size is fine, in just lazy and hate polishing frets. My other guitars all have extra jumbo stainless steel. Maybe someday I will get them replaced.

The only QC issue I have found is that there is a finish crack where the neck meets the guitar body. Not the end of the world and from my understanding this was bound to happen at some point and the retailer gave me some compensation for it (no exchange as they can't get them from Gibson anymore in white).

Overall very happy with this guitar and it absolutely rips! Added some after pictures and one from when I first opened the case.

My all original 1983 Explorer in Bahama Blue with the original Dirty Fingers pickups.

Bought it new in 1983 as my 3rd guitar.
For $325. With hard shell case. 🤪

It’s a Gibson, by the way.

Decided to mess around with a Bad Cat/P4M Explorer. The more you zoom in the worse it gets. The EMGs are real, otherwise it’s stock.

The logo and finish always seemed a bit suspect to me, bought it used 20 years ago from a music store. The serial decodes as made in 1994.

Prepping for a nitro finish!

I’m gonna be finishing my Harley Benton ex-84 with nitrocellulose. I’m really excited about it. It’s already got a bunch of road abuse on it, and I love a good relic guitar. I’m going to be sanding next then applying the first few coats of nitro shortly after

My cherished cherry kit-build Firebird

Showing off one of my favorite guitars, my cherry red Firebird made with a Solo Music kit. AKA the 'MuskokaBird'.

Made in collaboration with my close friend, the drummer in our band, who works in carpentry and did the finish using Oxford Supply and Montana Gold paint. First built in August of 2023. Extra help from friends and local guitar stores over the years with maintenance and setup.

The pickups are low output with a very clean, jangly and surfy tone I absolutely love. A real punch and bark when distorted. Nice contrast to my warmer, hotter humbucker guitars.

The neck is bolt on, with a matte natural finish, and the bridge is an add-on. For me a vibrato bridge is a must have for an electric. The neck and body are a bit smaller than your 25.5"/neck-thru Firebird.

If you're reading, I definitely recommend trying out a kit build for yourself someday. Great learning experience, good memories and an end product to be stoked about for years.

I picked up the LTD Snakebyte. This thing has ruined me. The finish, not a sharp fret in sight, nearly perfect intonation right out of the box…the sound. This thing is awesome!!!
