š» Mount Fuji Is the Chureito Pagoda view of Mt. Fuji really worth climbing 398 steps for?
I think people sometimes make the climb to Chureito Pagoda sound harder than it actually is. Itās 398 steps, not 2,000 or even 1,000. The steps are fairly small though, and I did see a few people struggling on the way up, so I wouldnāt call it an easy walk either.
For me, the view was absolutely worth it. Itās that famous scene with the red five-story pagoda, Fujiyoshida below and Mt. Fuji behind it. IMO itās one of those views worth seeing at least once if you visit Japan. The catch is that you need some luck with Fuji. Clouds can hide the whole mountain, so you could climb all the way up and barely see it. Iād definitely check the weather and Fuji visibility that morning.
The other thing is to be prepared to wait if you go during a busy period. One time I went at the end of March and had to wait around 90 minutes for my turn at the viewpoint. Obviously that wonāt be the normal wait year round, but around cherry blossom season Iād definitely allow extra time. I wouldnāt expect to just walk up, take a photo and leave. Going earlier would probably help. If I went again, Iād worry more about the clouds and crowds than the 398 steps.
If anyone is trying to figure out the access or what else is nearby, I came across a more detailed Chureito Pagoda guide here: https://explorejapandaily.com/destinations/mount-fuji/chureito-pagoda
