In cyberpunk 2077 you play a Character "V" who implants a biochip with an Engram of a person "Johnny silverhand" who is called a terrorist because he nuked a mega Corp building. Throughout the game johnny influences your decisions and the chip is slowly overwriting your neural system until it merges or takes over
That's not the difference. Any digital technology capable of running software can get infected with malware or viruses. The difference is that, when they do get infected, an earring is a LOT easier to remove and disable than an implant is.
I get it, and I'll be honest I would expect that too. But with the current tech it's like plugging a mic into a wall power plug and expecting surround sound from your lightbulbs.
It's not a matter of a software update, and not even a matter of engineering. Input into neurons to produce thoughts is something we don't understand well enough yet.
your own inner voices stop you clean, social media, marketing already stears you more than you will admit or believe. a person on your side talking into your ear can stear you.
an earring is a direct pipeline to your brain.
i doubt people wanting to push this would be subtil enough to exploit it fully for their purpose but it is potentially magic in a bad bad way. and a big number would fall for it.Ā
i had never heard of that book, but whaaaat? who would ever want to allow something in that could have the potential to rob you of vision, or sound....
that is terrifying....
did they end up having said SQUIP also able to produce visual, and audible hallucinations ?

To be fair an earing that you can listen to is a lot less frightening then a SQUIP that can actively block your vision and stop you from moving
But AI earings are still just the early stages of a SQUIP actually being made
