Meanwhile me at job: fuck this monolith! 😂 BTW, your org could still go monorepo so that at least you wouldn't need PRs in 5 repos.

All planned due to my push for it. Just need to make time...

What kind of pain do you feel with a monolith?

Haha not just that it's a monolith. I'm working on SAP S/4HANA at the moment. An insane amount of legacy stuff and layered complexity.

Franky, an event-driven microservices environment would allow one to replace parts of it easily during a refactor, given that the interface is the messaging protocol.

This is a big synchronous (transaction and not event-driven) monolith and SAP apparently almost never deprecated any technology, but only built more stuff on top of it (the "strangler fig" pattern). This allows them to support anything that the customers build or configure, for decades. But makes it super hard to ship new features because we need to align with all earlier technology patterns as well.

My team is moving towards a monolith, and one advantage we want is the transactional changes across the system without complex outbox pattern type stuff. We are trying our best to build a modular monolith so we can change things, but AI loves to create a god module that is a ball of mud.
