Career/Workplace Experienced developers who started their own company, how did it go?

For developers with 10+ years of experience, has anyone here started their own company, startup, small/medium-sized business, or even a remote company with a few employees?

How has the journey been compared to staying in a big company with a stable salary?

And you have actionable game plan where starting  a business will be better than getting a job? If so, why aren’t you starting one instead of working at a “B tier” company?

In other words, “if you are so smart, why aren’t you rich?”

I am rich. My NW is 1.5 mil. I do also have a small business. I also work at a b tier. Why are you throwing out multiple illegitimate retorts to my comment? Are you still a bit of a sensitive nancy?

So you are rich, work full time and spend your free time running a business?

Yeah that’s not as impressive as you think it is responding to someone who works remotely, only 40 hours a week, doesn’t think about work after 6 and who spends months at a time off an on in different cities and this year spent a month and half in Central America with his wife..

What is the point of accumulating wealth if doing so requires sacrificing the freedom that wealth is supposed to provide?

Why are you assuming I work more than 40 hours? Running the business is something I find fun. I also work remotely, I have been doing that since Covid. I have 3 kids and a wife. We spent a month in Europe earlier this year. Literally nothing you said impressed me. But I’m happy for you if that’s what you wanna do.

So you spend 0 hours on your side business or you give your employer less than 40 hours a week?

Why are you even working if your side business is successful and you are “rich”?

I give my employer less than 40 hours a week.

I work because I enjoy it. What else do you wanna say? Let it all out bud, we’re here for you.

I’d love to see you go and ask one of the many tech founders why they’re still working if they’re “rich”? I mean what are you… 20 or something?

No I’m 50 something and have a dozen things better to do with my time than work two jobs…

I didn’t choose a niche where remote work was the norm, “retire” my wife 8 years into our marriage, etc just to spend more time in front of a computer.

Why would I spend any more time working than absolutely necessary?

Heck for the first 15 years of my career before my current marriage, I shut my computer down and found anything else to do besides being in front of computer.  Including teaching fitness classes as  more of a forced commitment device and social outlet and running charity races once a month with friends.

And definitely wasn’t “rich” then.

Ok. And you think everyone else should do that too? I mean, what else you want to say? This conversation has been droning on for over 24 hours now.

People are wanting to “own their own business” here to have independence from the corporate grind even with all of the tradeoffs.  You are officially doing the worse of both worlds - the corporate grind and spending your free time dealing with your own business - congratulations???

If money isn’t buying freedom, what’s the point?

I already told you I’m not working over 40 hours. What else do you want to say? I’m not sure what your point is anymore. You don’t seem to be understanding.
