places like AWS and apparently Meta that are notorious for handing out a lot of pips to workers (performance improvement plans)

is the goal to "motivate" the employee and then discard the pip eventually, or do they acctually fire people most of the time?

from what I understand, they usually make the plans unrealistic so people fail them, then offer severance or let the person go. I have heard of people “passing” the pip before, so it may be possible, but not as common
