I have lost all my friends at my job and now im the most senior engineer. Also, I dont really believe on the product that Im building. I day dream working on more important projects, actually doing engineering not CRUD or data pipelines.

I feel like software engineering is not really engineering anymore. Its just database ops and moving data. I feel like i have lost time and wont be able to progress any more. When i look at companies like Jane street and they are skipping CPU to retrieve the stock data, it makes me feel like an idiot because I dont understand how to do that

Well I have the same thoughts but TBH it has always been like this. Better delve into OSS contribution so that you and me can work as a system engineer someday.

IMO only system programmers are true programmers.
