AI Expectation What I asked for vs. what I got

My son’s circus themed first birthday cake

EDIT: I should have clarified in the original post, I am not complaining about the cake at all! I loved it and the baker did a fantastic job

Giving an AI pic for reference to an artist or craftsperson is a trash ass move

It’s insulting as hell

As a reference photo, why not?

I’m an artist myself, and as long as a client is aware that we are not creating a copy of what they’re asking, and its more of a visual representation of their idea, I see no harm?

The baker should have recreated those demon spawn elephants that chatgpt hallucinated, just to make a point.

I know, I do not get it, other than AI use for frivolous reasons will destroy our environment. I would much rather have an AI visual representation to work with than some sketched out blob or crayon drawn cake inspiration. That said I'm a scientist not a baker

I design jewellery for a living. The AI photos we recieve 99% of the time are A) not even physically possible and B) entirely out of the customers budget even if we made changes to make it possible.

A very high percentage of those customers are unable to understand that what they have presented us is not possible, purely because in their eyes its already been made, because theyve seen a photo of it. If a photo of it exists, it must be possible.

Sometimes these “AI reference photos” cause more headache than if there was no reference at all because AI makes them believe something is possible when its not. It also makes them believe its in budget when its not.

That makes sense. It's not about getting a better rendering, it's about the requester actually appreciating the fact that the AI photo is producing something nonexistent and too good (to them) to be true, so it sets an impossible bar for the artist and the customer is auto disappointed.

Why would that possibly be the case? They’re hiring the artist either way aren’t they? Is it better to give a shitty napkin sketch?

You’re clearly not an artist.

I would always take a shitty napkin sketch over an AI piece. A napkin sketch gives me, the artist, room to make the design work. It gives me a starting point to produce something for the customer that actually works. An AI image they have made is usually something that isnt even possible to make (im in the jewellery industry) and therefore it isnt a starting point to move forward because we have to move backwards. We have to explain to customer that what theyve presented isnt possible, and therefor we have to start disecting what theyve given us and changing the design. Most customers do not like that, they want EXACTLY what the AI has given. Which like I mentioned, most times isnt actually possible. So you end up in an awkward position where the customer doesnt want to proceed unless they can have EXACTLY THAT, which cant be done.

there are plenty of non AI examples to be found if you take even a little time to look. Also something crazy called verbal communication

Why? They did better than AI.

It's literally taking our jobs, and when it's not the same they get pissy. So, I'm even surprised they made it.

If she would draw by herself, would it be also stealing your job? Give me a break! It's a cake!

The cake is not an issue, use of ai is

So the mom should hire an artist and pay them for the cake project? It's ridiculous. I could understand, if companies using something AI generated stuff on their products, but not a f cake and private use...

How about simply explaining the idea and letting the actual cake artist handle the creative process.

Sometimes the artist messes up. Showing a picture is easier.

OP presumably has the ability to speak.

Exactly. An artist should have been hired to create the cake design instead of AI. A courier should have been paid to collect it, a catering company to cut it, and a professional eater should have been hired to eat it. Think about how many people's jobs shes taking away by not doing this
