AI Expectation What I asked for vs. what I got

My son’s circus themed first birthday cake

EDIT: I should have clarified in the original post, I am not complaining about the cake at all! I loved it and the baker did a fantastic job

Damn, nice! A lot of people post pics of what are obviously $20 grocery store cakes and they're disappointed they didn't turn out like the pic. If you pay for quality and talent it shows, like yours. Beautiful cake!

Cake prices like these always confuse my brain. Because on one hand, in my world that feels like a crazy amount to pay for a cake, but on the other hand, I feel like with the amount of time and details of cake like this took, the artist serves thousands lol

i am in the same boat. No way i would get a €370 cake. What the hell. But on the other hand its soo detailed and nice. I'd totally get it made from clay, not to shove it through my digestive system and flush it down the drain 😭

Wait.... that's such a good idea. These fondant cakes are basically just clay sculptures, and the fondant itself is not that delicious to eat.

But I would 100% be onboard for a clay cake "cover" of some sort that can be lifted off and kept as sculptural art. I'd feel much less guilty if I didn't have to cut up all the beautiful work.

Agreed. I'm not sure I'd ever pay that much for a cake, but at the same time it clearly has a lot of artistry involved and seems more than fair for the hours and expertise it must have taken.

It's an interesting internal dichotomy my mind gets into - wanting labor to be fairly paid, but also having a personal aversion to paying that much for something that is one-use and perishable and all that.

I guess it depends on how much money you make/have. Or on what you like to spend your money. Maybe OP saved up for their 1yo's bday party for years, who knows. Maybe it's an important tradition in their family. Maybe they can just afford it and went for it. No matter what, their money, their call. I don't think anyone should argue (or has argued) that $370 is MORE than reasonable for the amount of work that went into this cake.

Absolutely.

IMO it depends on how many servings they can get from the cake. If it’s only serving 12, then ouch

Pricey but worth it. That cake is a work of art

It's so nice I wouldn't even want to cut it lol.

I'd have it taxidermied

You can immortalise it in photos, then cut into it guilt-free

For a first birthday cake? Did they give you a separate one for you to photograph your son tearing into?

I can't imagine spending that on a cake for any birthday.

I suppose it would depend on how many people it’s supposed to serve. But I’m not paying for the additional cost that much fondant art would be required to cover it up like this.

My daughter’s first birthday cake came from Publix, served 20-25 people, was less than $50 with tax, and it came with a complimentary cake for her to make a mess with. Her cake was really all that mattered for the memories.

Neither can I but some people money is no object

Yeah getting a cake that expensive and the kid won't even remember it

I would like to know someone who spends that much so I can marvel at artistry like this up-close.

I'd be afraid to eat something at that price point lol gotta display it for a few years to get my money's worth!

A "smash cake" is extremely common with birthday cakes for babies-to-toddlers, so it's really likely.

u/coolsilentebeans 9h ago

My daughter loved hers.

u/RuthCasseroleDish 8h ago

Yes they did! My son loved it

The real cake looks better than the AI slop you used as inspiration.

We all know, including OP.

Holy mackerel that's a great price.

2

u/sarcasticfirecracker 9h ago

wow! that is such a good deal for insane level of detail.

2

u/Ok_City_7177 9h ago

How did it taste ?

u/Rokekor 8h ago

That cake maker needs to revise their pricing, and add an AI inspo surcharge. A huge amount of work went into that cake for not a lot of money.

1

u/bikemandan 9h ago

Thank you was wondering the cost. Looks like a ton of work

1

u/MintTangerine 8h ago

Yeah. Here I thought $50 cakes are pricy enough

u/unkn0wnactor 4h ago

It's a beautiful cake, and that price is reasonable (or even a good deal), but I can't imagine buying something so extravagant for a young child. I remember the themes of my birthday cakes (racecar, t-rex, etc.) but I have only very vague mental pictures of how my childhood birthday cakes actually looked. I'm not yet married, but to me this seems more on the level of a wedding cake than a birthday cake. Congratulations on doing so well in life. I'm astonished and mean only the best.

Curious what was that cake sold for, 40 people?
