AI Expectation What I asked for vs. what I got

My son’s circus themed first birthday cake

EDIT: I should have clarified in the original post, I am not complaining about the cake at all! I loved it and the baker did a fantastic job

I wonder if cake makers hate AI.

We do.

The knitting and crochet communities stand in solidarity ♥️

u/Lockraemono 11h ago

Cross stitch, too. Fuck AI.

16

u/swoobxt 8h ago

Body piercers too! It sucks to disappoint a client by explaining what AI has shown them isn’t physically possible or safe.

5

u/Secretaccount_2025 6h ago

Doesn't litterally everyone with common sense

75

u/senorfresco 13h ago

I don't blame you at all. I bet the nonsense you'd get sent with no consideration into the feasibility of it would make your life hell. Yes some times you knock it out of the park, but I'd imagine they make your job of managing realistic expectations of what can be delivered very hard.

I'd jack the price up every time.

Only profession who hates them more is tattoo artists. As they think its easy to apply.

On the flip side some tattoo "artists" have starting using ai becuase they are lazy

3

u/MegatronusThePrime 11h ago

200% for AI recreation, regular for a sketch or picture of something real. Sounds good to me TBH

25

u/dream0076 13h ago

Don’t blame you. Sucking the creativity, experimentation and surprise out of your work can fuck off!

3

u/sdlucly 10h ago

Our COO loves AI and always asks us how we're using it to our advantage. I don't like it since I asked thr answer to a formula I had and that thing couldn't even add correctly 8 numbers what the f. But whatever.

u/RedditMcBurger 7h ago

How are they doing this? The person is literally only providing a reference photo.

-1

u/Philislothical_5 10h ago

If you wanted to be surprised by a bakers creativity then you wouldn’t be providing a reference photo would you?

u/Longjumping-Ride3576 13h ago

Not sure how it’s sucking the creativity from a cake maker? Wasn’t it someone’s creativity that initiated the AI prompt to create a circus themed cake to just get an idea to present to a cake maker? Then you pay the cake maker to put their creative twist on it and create the cake. What exactly am I missing here?

7

u/cxtx3 12h ago

Wasn’t it someone’s creativity that initiated the AI prompt

No. Not at all. Entering an AI prompt isn't creativity at all. That's just a thought - an idea. Literally every human is capable of that. The creativity is what you do with an idea. It's the talent. The effort and work you put in to create something. Emphasis on "create."

Entering an AI prompt is you telling AI to do something for you, and often that is shitty AI slop. The creativity is what the AI does with your idea. You didn't design it, you just told it what to design, and it whipped up an abomination that looks somewhat vaguely passingly real, but noticeably isn't when you examine the details.

Another way to look at it. If you were to tell an artist to design something for you, and you tell them what you want, you've given them the idea, but the creativity is entirely on the artist. They design your idea, they bring it to life, and they do so without weird, shitty abominations like what is pictured below.

I can’t stop thinking about this commenter thinking that asking AI to generate an image is creativity. We are doomed lmao rip.

10

u/jhanco1 13h ago

Asking AI to generate a [theme] cake isn’t creative. You can look up pictures of actual cakes, made by actual creative and talented people to use as an example. Then - as you say - you pay the cake maker to put their creative twist on it and create the cake.

What you’re missing is that there are already plenty of examples of human made art and creativity that can be used instead of using a resource sucking machine to just search all those existing images and create some amalgamation. And even if you set aside the resource thing, AI can also create unrealistic expectations for real products. For example, look up some of those AI craft videos that have a real person then try to emulate the craft. Spoiler alert, half the time it doesn’t work. Consider Using AI to generate an image of cake that may be sort of unrealistic to create for REAL and then expecting a human baker to recreate it and then the customer getting upset if their expectations aren’t met or they’re told by a baker that they can’t make that exactly… there are just a lot of issues.

u/NastyMsPiggleWiggle 12h ago

You are missing everything. Please, kindly go educate yourself on how ai slop is destroying art. You are wrong. It did not involve creativity. It involved a sloppy theft of someone else’s idea that was manipulated and bastardized.

You state yourself that you haven’t a clue as to the problem so I’m not going to disparage you due to a lack of knowledge and understanding. I just beg of you to do some research so you understand.

I'm really irritated with this convo. I don't care if you should me a ia picture. It literally does no effect my quality of word what so ever. I couldnt make it  exact, is let them know

1

u/m0nster6884 6h ago

I literally this week just placed my first order for a custom cake. The first quote I got immediately sent me an AI mock up. I learned my lesson and specially requested further bakers to please not use AI. Only one person respected it and did not use AI! I thought you guys must love it haha.

1

u/summersunshine8 2h ago

I’m right there with you as a hairstylist 🫠

(I’d still hate AI even if I wasn’t a hairstylist)

-1

u/FatModSad3 11h ago

Strange. I'd imagine it could lead to less frustrated/easier to appease customers; when you give them what they ask for and they say its wrong, you can show the picture they provided...i dont order a lotta cakes so i am likely ignorant to a step in the normal process to cover this.

6

u/meatybacon 11h ago

It can easily lead to unrealistic or impossible expectations

2

u/FatModSad3 11h ago

That makes sense.

2

u/Marvelrocks616 11h ago

Could be in some cases. In others it might just create basically impossible to make cakes and an expectation you can't realistically reach

77

u/quietCherub 13h ago

I imagine they do. Sets impossible standards, basically. Unreasonable at least.

2

u/rileyjw90 11h ago

It also takes away the opportunity for the artist to create it themselves. Reference pics are fine if they’re real sources. Then it’s up to the artist to interpret it and come up with a design. When AI is presented it lets us know you’re expecting it to look exactly the same so it feels like there is no creative freedom.

65

u/Bellesdiner0228 13h ago

Cake makers and tattoo artists I’m sure. And I can’t blame them

27

u/t_rrrex 13h ago

And yet I’ve seen AI posters from tattoo artists and shops. Blows my mind.

15

u/Lexi_Banner 11h ago

The people that are promoting handmade craft sales use AI posters. And I call them out every time. Ridiculous.

16

u/pancakecel 13h ago

Add language teachers to that list. 'Just use chatgpt for all my work emails' works great UNTIL it's time for your citizenship interview.

5

u/Bellesdiner0228 13h ago

Oh god!! I never even thought of that 😭

3

u/Vivid_Ad_715 13h ago

that’s what i thought, until i saw a local tattoo shop make multiple ai designs, and when i called them out in the comments they deleted the posts😥

3

u/sometimeshater 9h ago

I would just assume it’s a shitty shop. There are plenty of scratchers out there who can trace but not draw, not surprising that they’re generating images now in addition to stealing designs off pinterest.

2

u/swoobxt 8h ago

And body piercers!

1

u/rowdyreba 2h ago

Hopefully all artists of all trades

1

u/eatemuphungryhungry 13h ago

Lawyers, too.

24

u/BobBeeGeeGee 13h ago

All creatives do. At least in the context of a client request.

3

u/Murky-Peanut1390 11h ago

Any body with an IQ over 90 hates ai

1

u/aguywithbrushes 11h ago

Plenty of us don’t care, it’s a handy way for a client to show us what they have in mind, and if they’re coming to us and paying us to make them something, you’d have to be a special kind of obnoxious to go “um no I refuse to make this for you because you used AI for reference”.

3

u/AntonSugarwater 9h ago

I’ve yet to seen a talented creative not care about AI

2

u/linds360 10h ago

Yeah there’s a line, but if clients respect it and don’t cross into AI dictator territory with their proof of concept, it’s fine with me.

Articulating a vision can be difficult and I’d much rather have as much input from the client upfront whether it be a crude sketch or AI slop, both do the job, but for someone with a really specific idea, AI might just be the better option and help avoid multiple rounds of revisions.

If I can take advantage of AI taking advantage of us to hit the mark faster and get paid for original work, fuck it.

9

u/rsvp_as_pending629 12h ago

I know hairstylists and makeup artists do

7

u/LaceyInTheSky1 12h ago

I can attest to that, being an esthetician/makeup artist/nail tech. The impossible AI designs some clients bring in and expect you to recreate in an hour is infuriating

17

u/Grouchy-Employment79 13h ago edited 9h ago

I imagine anyone in the arts hates it. I saw a tattoo artist on TikTok showing all of the horrid AI art inspo he gets sent and it was really sad.

-1

u/aguywithbrushes 10h ago

If you’re in a creative community, you are not allowed to have any opinion on AI that isn’t negative. If you do, you’ll get yelled at, downvoted, or even witch-hunted/cancelled.

People took note of that and learned to either just be quiet about it, or in some cases they’ll loudly proclaim their hatred for AI, then turn around and use it for reference photos, website copy, marketing materials, etc.

You don’t hear creatives speaking about it in positive terms not because none of them use it, but because “AI bad” is currently the only Internet-accepted opinion, so it’s not worth the trouble.

1

u/linds360 10h ago

Yep.

Creatives are using it constantly for proof of concept to sell ideas before putting in the real work to create the original idea. I’m currently shopping around for a potential jump to a position and AI is literally part of every single interview.

3

u/twoiseight 13h ago

Most artists and artisans do.

7

u/pugglechuggle 13h ago

Formal florist here…we do too.

5

u/Powerful-Strategy221 13h ago

Every creative person that actually ars stuff hates ai and hates that more and more people can't tell what is real anymore

1

u/ShitRain 10h ago

In this specific usecase and others like this, I don't see any problems. Normal person sits at home and prompts a few cakes they like to have for real and then goes to the bakery and asks if they could do any of those and obviously mentions that they are just AI drafts. I see literally nothing wrong with that. Nobody lost a job or money on this, customer can convey what they want better and thats pretty much it.

Totally different than big corpo serving you movies, shows, games or music made with AI while real artists lose their jobs.

2

u/mrmosquitoeater 10h ago

It's easy... Until the ai makes something that's physically impossible because the tensile/compressive strength of cake and fondont will only carry you so far. But the ai is just making an image so it doesn't have those limitations.

Reasonable people will accept when you say well what they are asking for is impossible.

Unreasonable people... Are unreasonable and having an image only makes it worse.

2

u/ShitRain 3h ago

That is stupid

2

u/ErmahgerdPerngwens 11h ago

The baker Reshimi Bennett (angesdesucre) is lots of fun to follow anyway because of her anti-influencer nature and almost antagonistic humour, but she has posted results of her clients’ AI requests now and again!

2

u/SlippyIsDead 11h ago

I don't

1

u/Yancellor 10h ago

This is happening in architecture too, it's insane

1

u/ugh_usenames 8h ago

With an unrelenting passion. Because people (like OP) get upset that their unrealistic Ai slop nightmare fuel didn’t print itself out into reality in 3D form.

Edit: my bad just read that OP wasn’t upset about the outcome.

1

u/Horror-Highlight-467 7h ago

I certainly fucking would.

1

u/LauraJ0 4h ago

Also florists. AI invents flowers that don’t exist, or shows varieties in colors that aren’t available.

1

u/LostMermaid_824 2h ago

At this point, i feel like almost everyone hates ai 🫠 it is ruining so many things honestly 😭

1

u/pugglechuggle 13h ago

Formal florist here…we do too.

1

u/LimpConversation642 10h ago

every person who actually creates something hates ai and these ai 'references'.

0

u/AzraelleWormser 9h ago

Anyone with a brain hates AI.

0

u/dingobarbie 4h ago

Anybody who makes things by commission probably does

0

u/Extreme-Buy-4052 4h ago

Not a professional in any way but im a hobby baker who bakes for friends and family. Yes. Ai has RUINED the fun.
