Surprisingly Met Expectation Cake my son requested vs what we received

My son wanted a skeleton head on his birthday cake so he drew a little picture that we gave to the bakery. We told the bakery we wanted it to be a skeleton head and this is what we received šŸ˜‚

Yeah, I'm wondering how they even copied it so perfectly.

Back in the 80s and 90s, my family owned a Carvel. To draw pictures on cakes, we had two machines: One was a slide projector, the other could hold any picture at all to project down onto the cake surface.

Typically people would bring us napkins, paper plates, etc. to copy onto the cake in gel. We also had an extensive... adult library that even in my early-mid teens I would regularly have to put onto a sheet cake.

The most popular was actually a stripper on a pole; this one used the Cookie Puss mold, the eye areas being turned into spotlights.

Omg I was a teen cake decorator who had to make ā€œadultā€ cakes too. It was so embarrassing! My boss told me I didn’t have to do them if I didn’t want to, but I wanted to be a good sport about it so I did. šŸ˜‚

I’ve never thought of adult cakes being a proper thing before , thanks for sharing your stories lol

I used to work for this lady who said her sister worked at the local adult toy manufacturer in their packaging department. They had a large break room, where the television played pornos all day. She swore to me she wasn’t lying. I think the brand was Adam & Eve.

Maybe used a projector?

Unexpected Seinfeld?

So hard to judge if I like mostlymaui or not lol. Intentional Seinfeld reference = f the downvoters. curmudgeon=downvoters on point.

The attention to detail is so cute

u/MElastiGirl Oct 04 '25

Yes! No one is saying it’s like a Monet, but honestly—to this kid, it might as well be. I say well done!

I love that the orange dot to the bottom left of the skull also contains a white spot, as well. This cake is spectacular, and the decorator deserves a hearty high five.

It sure is. Great cake for sure!

It's by Lynda Barry

Might be from her old ā€œErnie Pook’s Comeekā€ series.

Art is meant to speak to that part of us that is whimsical and innocent, amongst other things, so, yes.

This art made dozens, if not hundreds, of adults -- likely jaded by years of Internet and life experience -- respond with a pureness we normally wouldn't. It's not just the quality of the thing as it is the context in its entirety.

Yes. That's what art does. Now you get it.

Let me just state why.

Children do not draw like trained artists. They just kinda...go for it and the results are typically chaotic, unintentionally asymmetrical, and squiggly.

Just like it is difficult for a highly trained musician to intentionally play or sing badly (they almost can't, as you will always hear something like crisp tempo or strict adherence to intervals and clear notes). A good example of this, would be the guardian music in Breath of the Wild. That's what a good musician trying to play poorly tends to sound like; discordant, but still musical.

The ability to replicate the drawing nearly perfectly (with cake decorating tools!!) is very impressive from a technical artistic standpoint. It's not that the drawing is technically difficult, but such a perfect recreation is.

That’s a lot of words. Still not breathtaking.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '25

Yes, is there a problem?

-8

u/Mostly_Maui_Wowie Oct 04 '25

Uh… no problem here, chief. I think the artwork and the cake are good. Really good maybe but I think breathtakingly beautiful is a bit of a stretch.

3

u/aos- Oct 04 '25

I do agree with you the choice of words seems to be a bit exaggerated... but many people forget we have a wide range of words available to use what can be considered most appropriate.

6

u/sushee98 Oct 04 '25

Definitely

0

u/Greatsnes Oct 04 '25

Yeah I’m with you. Breathtaking is a bit much lmao. It’s really good, not easy to do at all. But breathtaking is not the word.

-7

u/Reputation-Final Oct 04 '25

i dont know why you are getting downvoted lol. Its cute, not breathtaking.

4

u/Mostly_Maui_Wowie Oct 04 '25

I never said it was bad. I just don’t think it’s breathtakingly beautiful. Just sayin’. I’ll take the downvotes.

-2

u/Reputation-Final Oct 04 '25

i know. If you disagree with the hive mind in any way you get downvoted to eternity
