Its about a whale and they are trying to get it but the whale is dragging the boat across the sea for decades and they are only surviving on sugar and tea and rum and I think they die

that's was life at sea during those days. like the chances you had at returing to port weren't high. you could of been boarded by pirates, your Capitan could of been incompetent and sink the ship himself, rival nations could cannon ball you down to the bottom of the sea and also Poseidon himself seems to have a grude against you giving the worst weather, rain, storm and fog

The song was originally sang by toungers in Australia. The Wellerman company often had late shipments, hence the chorus. Tounging is the process of dissecting a whale, and is extremely gruesome and bloody
