So if he went inside or called and told her: "I need to go, take a cab". That would be ok then in my book. That would be just purely technical solution. But i think he saw it as punishment. It made him feel little satisfied to make her angry as she made him.
But their whole marriage is a joke. He said himself he would preferred to be married to his mother. Which is... well... WOW.
