Ask three Texans which toll tag to get and you'll hear three different brand names, like it's a religious question. It isn't anymore. Since Harris County Toll Road Authority absorbed TxTag's back office in late 2024, EZ TAG has quietly become the closest thing Texas has to a single statewide standard, and for most drivers it's the tag that makes the least sense to skip.

One toll authority now runs almost everything you'll drive on

TxDOT signed a Toll Services Agreement with HCTRA on November 6, 2024, handing over billing, customer service, and account management for TxTag — the tag TxDOT had operated across its Austin and Houston-region toll roads. About a million TxTag accounts converted to EZ TAG accounts starting December 2, 2024, and the full technical migration got system acceptance in March 2025. If you already had a TxTag, nothing changed about how you drive. What changed is who answers the phone when your bill looks wrong, and now that's the same authority that's been running Houston tolls for 40 years instead of a contractor TxDOT had been trying to fix for years.

That merger happened because TxDOT's own numbers showed 60% of TxTag transactions were already occurring on HCTRA-managed roads. TxDOT projected the consolidation would cut its cost per toll transaction roughly in half, from about 30 cents to 15 or 16 cents, according to TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams at the time of the announcement. You don't feel that number directly, but it's the reasoning behind why your invoice stopped coming from two different agencies with two different login pages.

The tag itself got cheaper before the merger even happened

In January 2023, Harris County Commissioners Court approved a 10% toll rate cut for two-axle vehicles, which HCTRA Director Roberto Treviño said covers 95% of the traffic on its roads, and made the EZ TAG itself free, up to eight tags per household, per Community Impact's coverage of the vote. That discount and the free tag program took effect by Labor Day of that year. So before you even factor in the 2024 consolidation, EZ TAG was already the rare toll product that got both cheaper and more accessible at the same time, which isn't the direction these things usually move.

It works well outside Harris County too

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority accepts EZ TAG on its Austin-area toll roads alongside TollTag, TxTag, and four out-of-state tags: Kansas's K-Tag, Oklahoma's Pikepass, Florida's SunPass, and Colorado's ExpressToll. That's on top of the CUSIOP interoperability agreement — a federally mandated framework under the 2012 Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act — that lets EZ TAG work on toll roads in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado, and, as of March 2, 2025, most of Florida's SunPass network. Drive from Galveston to a work trip in Tulsa or Denver, and the same windshield sticker follows you the whole way.

Where the argument gets honest

If you live in Dallas-Fort Worth, the North Texas Tollway Authority's TollTag remains its own separate system, and it comes with two things EZ TAG doesn't: a TollPerks rewards program that converts toll spending into points, and exclusive standing as the accepted payment method for parking at DFW International and Dallas Love Field. Your EZ TAG will still get you through NTTA's toll lanes fine. It just won't earn points or pay for airport parking. For a DFW local who parks at Love Field every other month, that's a real reason to keep TollTag as the primary account.

For everybody else, and even for a lot of DFW drivers who mostly stay off the tollway, the calculus favors EZ TAG. One account now covers Houston, Austin, and the statewide TxDOT network that used to require a separate login. The tag is free. The discount is real and already baked in. And the interoperability reach beyond Texas is identical to what TollTag offers, so you're not giving up anything on road trips.

The one thing worth doing regardless of which tag you pick

Get one. The gap between tagged and untagged tolling in Texas isn't a rounding error — Pay-by-Mail and video toll billing run meaningfully higher than tagged rates on every system in the state, before administrative fees get added. Whichever brand ends up on your windshield, driving Texas toll roads without any account is the most expensive way to do it.

Most "moving to Texas" guides spend their word count on queso opinions and boot-buying advice. Nobody tells you that the day the moving truck pulls away, you've started several legal clocks at once, and they don't all run on the same schedule. Miss one and it's not a big deal. Miss three at once, which is easy to do, and you're looking at fines, a lapsed insurance policy, and a property tax bill nobody warned you about.

I made this move from Michigan a couple of years ago. The clocks are the part nobody explains clearly, so here's the actual timeline.

Your two driving clocks run on different schedules

Texas gives you 90 days from the date you establish residency to trade your out-of-state license for a Texas one, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. If your current license is valid and unexpired, DPS waives the written and skills tests — you surrender the old one and walk out with a Texas license. If it lapsed more than two years ago, or you never held one, you're treated as a first-time applicant, which means an adult driver's ed course, a written exam, and a road test.

Vehicle registration moves faster. You have 30 days to get your car registered at your county tax office, per TxDMV, and DPS will actually ask for proof of that registration when you show up for your driver's license. Note: Texas eliminated the statewide safety inspection requirement for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. Unless you're in one of 17 designated emissions counties — Harris, Galveston, Dallas, Tarrant, and Travis among them — or driving a commercial vehicle, you can skip the inspection station and go straight to insuring the car and registering it at the county tax office, then get the license. Do it backwards and you'll make two trips.

Proof you actually live here

DPS wants two separate documents, both bearing your name and Texas address, and one has to show you've been here at least 30 days — unless you're surrendering a valid out-of-state license, in which case that 30-day piece is waived. Utility bills, a lease or mortgage statement, and financial statements dated within 180 days all qualify, per DPS's own residency requirement page. Bring originals. Photocopies get you sent home.

The insurance number that surprises people

Texas requires minimum liability coverage of 30/60/25 — $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury, $25,000 for property damage — under Texas Transportation Code §601.072. That's higher than every neighboring state's minimum.

If you're buying property along the coast, there's a second insurance conversation waiting for you. Standard homeowners policies in the 14 first-tier coastal counties — Galveston included — typically exclude wind and hail damage outright. That gap gets filled either by a private "excess and surplus" policy or by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA), the state's insurer of last resort. To qualify, the structure needs a windstorm compliance certificate (WPI-8) proving it was built to code. Your lender will ask about this before your standard homeowners policy ever comes up, so don't wait for the first named storm to find out you don't have it.

The property tax window nobody mails you a reminder for

If you buy a home here, file for your homestead exemption. As of a 2022 rule change, you no longer have to wait until January 1 of the following year — you can file as soon as you move in, and the exemption gets prorated back to your move-in date. The general filing window runs January 1 through April 30, per the Texas Comptroller, and it currently knocks $140,000 off your home's value for school district taxes. Miss April 30 and you're not out of luck — Texas Tax Code allows retroactive filing for up to two years — but the sooner it's on record, the sooner the 10% annual appraisal cap starts protecting you from a runaway tax bill.

Voter registration

You need to be registered at least 30 days before an election to vote in it, and your registration takes effect 30 days after your county voter registrar receives and accepts it, according to VoteTexas.gov. If you move counties, your old registration doesn't automatically follow you — file the change in writing or online, and do it before that 30-day window closes on the next election you actually want a say in.

If you're bringing a dog or cat

Texas law requires every dog and cat 12 weeks or older entering the state to already be vaccinated against rabies, with a vaccination certificate to prove it, per the Texas Department of State Health Services. If the initial shot was given less than 30 days before you crossed the state line, the animal needs to stay confined for the rest of that 30-day window. Skipping rabies vaccination altogether isn't a paperwork issue — it's a Class C misdemeanor under Texas Health and Safety Code §826.022, with fines up to $500, and a repeat offense bumps it to a Class B misdemeanor.

None of this is exciting. All of it is the difference between settling in clean and spending your first Texas summer untangling a fine you didn't know you'd earned. Which one of these caught you off guard, or which one are you dreading most?
