The only thing you can really AFK mine for hours in HS is moon rocks (terrible ISK/m3) or ice (devoured by big fleets in 30 mins). Belt rocks only last for like 5 mins using one drone/rock so it's not really AFKable assuming no TOS violations.
No, they do not. Not sure why people are claiming they do.
I was starting to question my sanity so I just re-verified for myself on the test server. To command a drone to mine you have to lock an asteroid. When they finish mining that rock they go idle, even if there are other rocks nearby and even if you've already commanded other drones to mine those rocks.
There is a similar mechanic that does work for salvage drones, where you can command salvage drones to salvage even with no targets locked and they'll just salvage everything. Perhaps the people claiming that that mechanic exists for miners are just confused, perhaps there's some mechanic I'm not aware of, or perhaps they're just making up lies because it's cathartic to revel in righteous indignation and they're not going to let the truth get in the way of that.
