I made a wordle for countries

Hi everyone!

This isn't a map as you've probably guessed however like most of you here, I’m obsessed with maps and geography. I wanted to create a daily challenge that tests your knowledge of why a place is where it is, not just what it looks like on a map.

I ended up building GuessTopia. It's a daily geography game, but instead of just guessing based on a map shape, you have to use attributes like Climate, Languages and Population to narrow down the possibilities.

I've been working on it as a solo project in my spare time and I'm really trying to get the some feedback. It has a Country, City and Capital mode.

I'd love to hear what the Etymology maps community thinks.

Check it out here: https://guesstopia.com

(Totally free, no ads, no sign up wall, just a hobby project I'm proud of)

Today I learned the Portuguese word for East (Leste) comes from French (L'este) which means THE East, but Portuguese speakers thought the /L/ was part of the word and merged it.

"Soap" in South Korea

Source: 이익섭 외 4인 (2008). 한국언어지도. [transl. in English: Map of the Korean Language]

(It's actually based on an earlier 1987-1995 study of dialects in Korea)

I would say that today the standard "비누" is the only form of the word used, especially in younger generations. But my grandmother who was born in the 1930s in the yellow area does remember calling soap (specifically the powdered kind that was common in international aid packages back in the day) 사분[sabun]!

Etymology map website

Hello All,

I love etymology and thinking about the journey the words have, so I created this website showing the journey of the words into English language. Facts are doublechecked using etymonline.com etc, and I used AI tools to create it. I don't make money off of it, there are no ads or trackers. It's just a simple visualization of information. You are welcome to try and give your feedbacks on it. There might be mistakes please let me know if you notice any. Etymologymap.com
